This project presents and analyses all of the signet rings and intaglios so far unearthed in Roman Britain to reinterpret how they were used and their role within provincial society. These small artefacts have traditionally been regarded as attractive but relatively insignificant minor objets d’art, with little relevance to the wider discourses of Romanists. This thesis attempts a more critical examination of how they were used and their role within provincial Roman society. I argue that signet rings were an essential element in provincial society that should no longer be overlooked. This project builds on the pioneering Corpus assembled by Martin Henig in the 1970s, including more recent
discoveries and more than doubling the material available to him. This combined body of evidence includes 2,012 signet rings and intaglios, making it one of the largest contextualised assemblages of these objects ever studied. It also benefits from the results of developer funded archaeology and the advent of recording by the Portable Antiquities Scheme, enabling us to create a richer and more detailed picture how they were used.

My approach has been to resituate these objects in terms of the archaeological context in which they were found, but also to consider them as functional as well as decorative objects. When
studied in this way signet rings provide a unique perspective on the identity of their wearers, and how they wanted to present themselves to others. I have found growing evidence for the use of signet rings amongst local elites before the Roman invasion of Britain, and it is clear that they had a role to play in negotiating identity after the conquest. I have also been able to identify trends in the way that different communities used signet rings, both as regards their imagery and materiality. It is also apparent that in
some parts of Britain these objects remained a feature of a type of dress and the hallmark of a society that remained alien to their inhabitants throughout the Roman period. However, for those who chose to wear them, signet rings could be more than just objects but reflections of themselves.

Engraved Gems and Propaganda in the Roman Republic and under Augustus deals with small, but highly captivating and stimulating artwork – engraved gemstones. Although in antiquity intaglios and cameos had multiple applications (seals, jewellery or amulets), the images engraved upon them are snapshots of people's beliefs, ideologies, and everyday occupations. They cast light on the self-advertising and propaganda actions performed by Roman political leaders, especially Octavian/Augustus, their factions and other people engaged in the politics and social life of the past.

Gems can show both general trends (the specific showpieces like State Cameos) as well as the individual and private acts of being involved in politics and social affairs, mainly through a subtle display of political allegiances, since they were objects of strictly personal use. They enable us to analyse and learn about Roman propaganda and various social behaviours from a completely different angle than coins, sculpture or literature.

The miniaturism of ancient gems is in inverse proportion to their cultural significance. This book presents an evolutionary model of the use of engraved gems from self-presentation (3rd-2nd century BC) to personal branding and propaganda purposes in the Roman Republic and under Augustus (until 14 AD). The specific characteristics of engraved gems, their strictly private character and the whole array of devices appearing on them are examined in respect to their potential propagandistic value and usefulness in social life.

The wide scope of this analysis provides a comprehensive picture covering many aspects of Roman propaganda and a critical survey of the overinterpretations of this term in regard to the glyptic art. The aim is the incorporation of this class of archaeological artefacts into the well-established studies of Roman propaganda, as well as the Roman society in general, brought about by discussion of the interconnections with ancient literary sources as well as other categories of Roman art and craftsmanship, notably coins but also sculpture and relief.

Le recensement des bagues mises au jour à Avenches – toutes périodes confondues – a permis d’identifer 275 bagues et 24 intailles et cabochons. Cet inventaire comprend toutes les découvertes jusqu’en 2013 et couvre une four-chette chronologique s’étendant de La Tène fnale à l’époque moderne, même si la majorité du corpus date de la période romaine.La diversité des bagues et de leurs éléments décoratifs a permis la confrontation du faciès avenchois avec les typologies établies par H. Gui-raud pour la Gaule et E. Riha pour le corpus d’Au-gusta Raurica, tout en proposant une nouvelle classifcation des formes en une quarantaine de groupes ou sous-groupes. Cette catégorisation se veut évolutive, en fonction des futures décou-vertes sur le site et, pourquoi pas, à l’échelle d’une aire géographique plus étendue.Les nombreux motifs iconographiques fgu-rés sur les 58 intailles font l’objet d’un commen-taire prenant en compte à la fois le dessin repré-senté, le matériau, mais aussi le style de gravure et l’association avec la monture. Si la confron-tation des données a presque toujours abouti à une corrélation entre les différents éléments datant, dans certains cas, l’inadéquation entre la gemme et sa monture a permis de mettre en évidence des phénomènes de conservation de pièces anciennes durant l’Antiquité ou l’assem-blage récent de pièces anciennes.L’examen détaillé du corpus est traité dans un catalogue commenté, alors que les réfexions sur les répartitions spatiales et chronologiques sont abordées dans les chapitres introductifs. La répartition spatiale des parures révèle leur pré-sence dans tous les types de contextes archéo-logiques. Quelques ensembles particuliers font toutefois l’objet de commentaires plus appro-fondis. Les sites abordés sont le palais de Derrière la Tour, l’édifce public de l’insula 23 Ouest, le forum, le moulin hydraulique d’En Chaplix et les nécropoles d’À la Montagne et d’En Chaplix.Ces approches croisées permettent de mettre en évidence la pérennité de l’usage de bagues sur le site, puisqu’elles couvrent toute la période d’occupation antique et qu’on les trouve occasionnellement aussi dans des contextes laténiens, médiévaux et modernes.
Unter den Schmuckfunden von Avenches wurden bis in das Jahr 2013 275 Ringe sowie 24 Gemmen und Cabochons erfasst. Die inven-tarisierten Ringe überdecken einen Zeitrahmen von der Spätlatènezeit bis in die Moderne, der Grossteil stammt aus der Römerzeit. Diese Ringe und ihre dekorativen Bestandtei-le wurden mit der von H. Guiraud und E. Riha, auf der Basis von den Funden in Gallien und in Augusta Raurica (Augst/Kaiseraugst) erstellten Typologie abgeglichen. Dabei entstand eine neue Klassifzierung in vierzig Gruppen und Un-tergruppen, die als mögliche Referenz für diese Art von Fundinventar gelten kann.Die zahlreichen ikonographischen Motive der 58 Gemmen aus Schmuckstein und Glaspas-te werden eingehend behandelt, dabei wurden vor allem die Darstellung, das Material, die Art der Gravur und die Zugehörigkeit zur Fassung untersucht. Bei der Berücksichtigung aller Daten liess sich fast immer eine Korrelation zwischen den einzelnen Elementen feststellen. In einigen Fällen ergab die Unstimmigkeit zwischen Gem-me und Fassung, dass antike Stücke in der Antike wohl lange Zeit aufbewahrt worden sind oder dass die Fassung erst in moderner Zeit erfolgte. Den Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit bildet der kommentierte Katalog der Funde, einige Kapitel befassen sich darüber hinaus mit deren räumli-cher und chronologischer Verteilung sowie mit einigen besonderen Fundkontexten. Die berück-sichtigten Fundstätten sind der Palast von Der-rière la Tour, das öffentliche Gebäude in der insu-la 23, der westliche Randbereich des Forums, die Wassermühle von En Chaplix und die Nekropo-len von À la Montagne und En Chaplix.Diese Untersuchungen aus verschiedenen Perspektiven belegen die beständige Verwen-dung von Ringen. Die ermittelten Typen vertei-len sich über die gesamte antike Besiedlungszeit, zu dem Corpus gehören latènezeitliche, aber auch mittelalterliche sowie moderne Schmuck-stücke. Diese Omnipräsenz der Ringe zeigt sich auch in ihrer räumlichen Verteilung : Sie kamen in fast allen Quartieren und ausgegrabenen Sek-toren sowie in allen Arten von Kontexten (Wohnbauten, Heiligtümer, öffentliche Gebäude und Nekropolen) zu Tage.

Der Katalog erschien anlässlich der Sonderausstellung »Kunst in Miniatur – Antike Gemmen aus Bayern«, die in Kooperation zwischen der Archäologischen Staatssammlung München und dem kelten römer museum vom 24. Juli 2021 bis zum 6. Februar 2022 in Manching präsentiert wurde. +++ Der Kernbestand zu den bayerischen Fundgemmen war zuvor bereits in der Münchner Residenz und in der Burg Grünwald zu sehen. This book is a catalogue raisonée of a rich collection of ancient engraved gems housed in the National Museum in Krakow. It offers a thorough insight into ancient glyptic art through the considerable range of almost 780 so far unpublished objects – cameos, intaglios, scarabs and finger rings of various styles, workmanship and cultural circles: Egyptian, Near Eastern, Minoan, Greek, Etruscan, Italic, Roman, Sassanian and early Christian, dated from the second millennium BC to the seventh century AD.

Many pieces in this cabinet are notable not only for their top quality in terms of craftsmanship and design, but also for the materials used and engravings involving complex iconography illustrating religious beliefs, political allegiances, needs and desires that ancient people wished to be fulfill, fears, dangers and terrors from which they sought protection and even their daily occupations. The collection provides with a fascinating gallery of portrait studies presenting Hellenistic rulers and their queens, Roman emperors and members of their families as well as some private individuals. Some specimens are exceptional and unparalleled like the onyx cameo portraying Drusus Maior, likely executed by the hand of Eutyches, son of famous Dioscurides (cover) or a tiny but remarkably cut emerald cameo with a laureate portrait bust of Livia Drusilla as goddess Venus. Some objects have been preserved in their original settings (gold, silver, bronze, iron rings), which contributes to the study of ancient gems’ chronology and indicate their users, while others have been later re-set into eighteenth- and nineteenth-century collectors’ rings and sometimes more elaborated mounts. There are also pieces discoloured due to contact with considerable heat, which may suggest them to have been burnt with other personal objects on the funeral pyres and later deposited in burials. Noteworthy is the number of Greek and Latin inscriptions appearing on intaglios and cameos forming this cabinet. They span from owners’ names to the subtle messages communicated between lovers and invocations to the God.

Each gem is thoroughly analysed, described and exhaustively commented as to the device it bears, chronology and possible workshop attribution. A vast number of parallel objects is referenced too. This combined with provenance study presented in the first part of the book enabled to establish where a number of intaglios and cameos were manufactured, including almost 140 objects most likely to origin from the most important Roman workshop located in Aquileia. It ought to be singled out that many gems in this volume once constituted a part of distinguished collections formed by such personalities as Tobias von Biehler, Alessandro Gregorio Capponi, Auguste le Carpentier, Alessandro Castellani, Comte de Caylus, Count Nikolai Nikitich Demidoff, Baron Albert de Hirsch, Jean François Leturcq, Sibylle Mertens-Schaaffhausen, Dr. George Frederick Nott, Benedetto Pistrucci, James-Alexandre de Pourtalès (Comte de Pourtalès-Gorgier), Paul von Praun, Andrey Kirillovich Razumovsky, Jacques Meffre Rouzan, Philipp von Stosch, Antonio Maria Zanetti and many more. They seemed lost for more than 130 years, but now have been brought back and are accessible to everyone. Consequently, the volume presents three intriguing stories of collectors whose donations contributed to the Krakow assemblage. They not only provide the reader with a sort of background for the objects discussed further, but also illustrate nineteenth- and early twentieth-century collecting practices and the art market for engraved gemstones, contributing to our knowledge of the history of scholarship and collecting. In summary, this book is intended to be useful not only for scholars interested in gems, but also those who study the history of the art market and collecting as well as all the enthusiasts of Classical art and archaeology.
