Redescription

Dilian Georgiev found topotypes of Viviparus sphaeridius Bourguignat, 1880, which has not been mentioned in the West European literature since its original description, except one citation by Westerlund . The rediscovery of this species is provided. As a result, V. sphaeridius is considered to represent a species in its own rights well distinguishable from the other European species in the genus Viviparus. Additionally, a key to the Viviparus species from Europe is given to facilitate future identification and prevent further misidentifications.

Coenosia macrotriseta sp. n. is described from the Western Cape, South Africa, with C. globuliseta Pont being redescribed and new illustrations provided. As judged by external morphological characters, particularly the presence of globular setae, the two species are very closely related. They are, however, very wide ly separated geographically and differ clearly as regards genital structure.

ABSTRACT:

This article takes up issues raised in the debate over what Ian Hacking has labelled 'an indeterminacy in the past'. It addresses certain criticisms of Wes Sharrock and Ivan Leudar, and attempts to develop further the idea that difficulties with retroactive redescription reflect a deep indeterminacy about certain past actions. It suggests that there are in fact two distinct but related indeterminacies at issue, and that these may best be understood in the context of Hacking's theses about the historical constitution of social phenomena and the looping effect of human kinds.

This reflection is derived from experience teaching "redescription" in a variety of Religious Studies classes at Rhodes College and Stonehill College 1 using an unusual text, Susan Clancy's Abducted: How People Come to Believe They Were Kidnaped by Aliens (Harvard University Press, 2007). Redescription is fundamental. All of us in Religious Studies likely teach and/or model some variation of this basic analytic move, whether or not we use the term "redescription" popularized by Jonathan Z. Smith and others. 2 The basic process of analyzing the emic concepts and terms of our data using etic scholarly concepts is indispensable to the academic study of religion. (Critically analyzing and assessing our etic scholarly categories ("rectification") is just as important, and it is important to point this out to students when discussing redescription. This essay will only deal with redescription. I would point to Jennifer Eyl's essay "Rethinking Monotheism in the Classroom: How to Illustrate a Problem," in this journal, for a creative and helpful example of rectifying categories. 3) Redescription is, however, a bit hard to teach, and for many students, at first, approaching religion this way just does not feel right. Students are often preoccupied with the idea that redescription introduces bias (a word that has become a dog whistle; see Fox News' frequent use of the banner "Bias Alert!"), is distorting, or that it does not take the evidence seriously. This last objection is, in my experience, the most common. Students assume that by understanding religious phenomena in any way other than the way practitioners themselves understand them, we are somehow not taking religion seriously. A recent revision of burrowing mysid taxa in coastal waters on both sides of the American continent, published in this journal by Heard and Price (2006), necessitates a redescription of Chlamydopleon aculeatum Ortmann, 1893 based on type material from the Tocantins estuary on the coast of Brazil. A lectotype is designated and this taxon is revalidated at the species and genus level. The genus Chlamydopleon Ortmann, 1893 gains precedence over the junior synonym Bowmaniella Heard & Price, 2006. The West Atlantic species Gastrosaccus dissimilis Coifmann, 1937 is redescribed based on the types from the coast of Brazil. Regional morphological differences are evident in additional material from 24°S to 34°N. This species and the East Pacific Bowmaniella (Coifmanniella) banneri Bǎcescu, 1968 are transferred to the genus Chlamydopleon, using the new combinations C. dissimile and C. banneri. A key to the acknowledged two genera and seven species of Gastrosaccinae with apically widened third male pleopod is given.

Recently, some commentators have argued that the word ‘terrorist’ should be abandoned as it has become overloaded with undesirable ‘rhetorical’ connotations. This view is premised on the assumption that an adequate distinction may be drawn between principled, ‘logical’ usages and merely ‘rhetorical’ ones. This article argues that the use of the word ‘terrorist’ normally has a ‘rhetorical’ aspect and that theorists must therefore find ways to distinguish between principled and unprincipled rhetorical deployments. I distinguish three rhetorical possibilities for using the word ‘terrorist’: the first invokes interlocutors' established background commitments to moral and descriptive norms, seeking agreement on the application of the word to a particular case; the second seeks to innovate, challenging either moral norms, descriptive criteria or, less often, the illocutionary force of the term; the third resists innovation but deploys the term in metaphorical ways for moral-rhetorical emphasis. Based on this taxonomy, the article reviews both polemical and scholary debates about definition and then proposes pragmatic, rhetorical considerations for adjudicating between competing definitional arguments. Finally, I review the implications of these considerations for the contentious issue of whether or not the term ‘terrorist’ properly applies to states.

Th e scorpion Mesobuthus vesiculatus (Pocock, 1899) was briefl y described from northwestern Iran based on only one male with a picture indicating the dorsal habitus of the holotype; the author pointed out that it has a large and globular telson with a short aculeus. Th is species, with very distinct morphological features, is now redescribed based on new specimens (3 ♂♂, 3 ♀♀) collected from West Azerbaijan and East Azerbaijan (Iran). Detailed fi gures and measurements are presented and the trichobotrial pattern and paraxial organ are illustrated for the fi rst time. Th e morphological diff erences of M. vesiculatus from similar species M. caucasicus, M. eupeus, and Sassanidotus gracilis are discussed.

Indochinese species of the genus Crematogaster Lund, 1831 subgenus Physocrema Forel, 1912 are reviewed. Four species are recognised in the region. Two taxa formerly treated as subspecies of difformis, C. (P.) physothorax Emery, 1889 and C. (P.) sewardi Forel, 1901, are raised to species level. An identification key to species in the region is presented.

Two species of Hassalstrongylus Durette-Desset, 1971, coparasitic in Holochilus chacarius Thomas (Rodentia, Cricetidae) and not recorded since their original description in 1937, were newly found in their type host and locality. Hassalstrongylus mazzai (Freitas, Lent and Almeida, 1937) and Hassalstrongylus argentinus (Freitas, Lent and Almeida, 1937) were obtained from Ho. chacarius from 2 different populations: one from Salta Province (northwest Argentina) and another from Chaco Province (northeast Argentina). The species described as Heligmonoides mazzai Freitas, Lent and Almeida, 1937 had been transferred to Hassalstrongylus even though its synlophe had never been studied. We provide the first descriptions and illustrations of the synlophe of males and females of Hassalstrongylus mazzai and the female of H. argentinus and account for morphological and metrical variability. We confirm, through the study of the synlophe, the placement of Hassalstrongylus mazzai in the genus Hassalstrongylus and designate neotypes for the species because the type material deposited by the authors could not be found. Females of both species were morphologically very similar, and a principal components analysis (PCA) performed on some morphometrical characters showed that the body length, uterus length, and an unexpected character as the number of eggs were useful characters in the discrimination of both species.
