Quentin Massys

The aim of this paper presentation is to compare Europe’s foremost humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam (1466/1469–1536) to the Flemish painter Quentin Metsys (1466–1530). Contact between the painter and Erasmus is well documented, with letters of the latter and the two portraits the artist made of him. The first portrait was painted for Thomas More in 1517, paired in the ‘friendship diptych’ with a likeness of Peter Gillis, who was the secretary of magistrates of Antwerp. Metsys’s portrait, commissioned by Erasmus and Peter Gillis, reveals the importance of Metsys’s growing association with Erasmus and Antwerp’s erasmian circle of humanist scholars. This demonstrates an influence of the artist’s redefinition of his role and profession. His abandonment of the public piety of altarpieces for a more private and personal religious imagery may be attributed to a change in his religious values, which were in part affected by his contact with the humanist.

Initial observation of the tryptich with the Lamentation of Christ, believed to be by a follower of Flemish master Quinten Metsijs, revealed a complex material history of the painting. Several overpaints en retouches were found on both
the paintings and the frames. With the purpose of establishing a conservation treatment, further research was needed. The goal was to define a time frame for the origin of the painting and its overpaints. The material technical analysis
involved visual observation, including UV-photography, XRF-spectroscopy, microchemical tests and microscopical examination.

Ist man bereit, einschlägige Ausführungen über das Heilige ein wenig gegen den Strich zu lesen, so lassen sie sich nicht nur für ein vertieftes phänomenologisches Verständnis der Apparatur Triptychon fruchtbar machen. Sie liefern darüber hinaus zahlreiche wertvolle Ansatzpunkte dafür, wie man, den Leitthesen dieses Bandes folgend, verschiedene Operationen und Strukturmerkmale eines Triptychons als Generatoren des Heiligen verstehen kann. Es geht also darum, wie man das Numinose im Zusammenhang mit schreinartigen Anordnungen als einen medial generierten Effekt modellieren könnte. Die folgenden Überlegungen nehmen von diesen › wildernden ‹ Lektüren ihren Ausgang und ziehen einschlägige Forschungen zur Phänomenologie des christlichen Triptychons und zu verwandten Dispositiven ebenso heran wie -an einem instruktiven Beispiel -Formen künstlerischer Verstärkung solcher › medialen ‹ Qualitäten.
