Park Design

Bahçe"nin geçmişinin neredeyse insanlık tarihi kadar eski olduğunu düşünürsek, ölçek olarak bahçeden daha büyük bir yeşil alana sahip olan parkların da ilk örneklerinin bir o kadar eskilere dayandığını söyleyebiliriz. Ancak, tarih öncesi çağlardaki park örnekleri çoğunlukla dinlenme av, eğitim, tarımsal faaliyetler ve dinsel işlevler için ayrılmış, "kişilere ait büyük bahçelerdi". Kamusal toplanmalar genellikle dönemine göre agora, forum ya da meydanlarda yapılıyordu ve bahçeler ile ölçek anlamında park niteliğinde olan alanlar da "mülkiyeti belli bir kişiye ait olan" yeşil alanlardı. Büyüklüğü ne olursa olsun "bahçe" takısı almaktan kendini kurtaramayan parklar için ilk dönüm noktası 19. yüzyıldır. Bu yüzyılda toplumlarda her alanda büyük değişimlere yol açan Sanayi Devrimi ile birlikte kentlerde nüfus ve yapılaşma artmış ve bu değişim kırsal toplumdan kentsel topluma geçişin başlangıcı olmuştur. Hızlı kentleşme sonucu azalan doğal kaynakları koruma amacıyla geliştirilen öneriler ile kent planlama ve peyzaj bu yüzyılda daha ön plana çıkmış ve gittikçe artan yeşil alan ihtiyacı sebebiyle de park hareketi, bahçe kent hareketi gibi yaklaşımlar ile rekreasyon alanı, metropoliten park sistemi gibi kavramlar ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu nedenle, 19. yüzyılın ikinci yarısı özel bahçelerden, kamuya açık parklara ve bahçe tasarımından, peyzaj mimarlığına geçişin yaşandığı yıllar olmuştur.

This paper focuses on the Superkilen Park (2012), situated in the dense residential area of Nørrebro-an ethnically diverse and challenging district of Copenhagen. The designer team, Superflex, BIG, and Topotek 1, intends to represent a coexisting multicultural society. This paper makes a reading of Superkilen as a mediated reproduction, since mass media, particularly advertising and publishing, become an essential catalyst in the design process. Furthermore, the park is continuously consumed worldwide via advertisements, printed materials, exhibitions, and digital media. Therefore, apart from the concept of the park as a social construct, as this paper shows, Superkilen emerges as an instrument of image making and city branding, since it is primarily produced as image. A proliferation of photographs that promote Superkilen and publicise Nørrebro shows the urge to capture frames of monochrome, colourful, striped, and patterned urban furniture, objects, and surfaces. Yet the glossy and manipulated images do not reflect the materiality and use of the built park. Today, a flood of images dominates the media saturated public sphere, since, for the commercial success of art and architecture products, the works ought to be well promoted. Drawing from contemporary architectural and cultural theories of image and media, this paper tackles the media appearances of Superkilen as fabricated and marketed images. It evaluates how representations transform the park into frames of reality and idealized images of everyday life.

Design of environment, structure or products which can be used by individuals with different size, gender, age and ability is defined as universal design. This design provides that all individuals should enjoy equal rights. Therefore, universal design undertaken in artificial environment does not allow the disadvantaged groups such as the people with disabilities, elderly and children to be excluded from others as they do in accessible design. It is argued by researchers that parks and playgrounds have an important role in children's development, and therefore should be designed by taking all children with different skills and abilities into consideration. This article aims at studying the accessible playground located in Dr Fazıl Kucuk Park (Cyprus) by adopting the principles of universal design and therefore proposing solutions to design an inclusive playground enabling children with different abilities to enjoy the park all together.

This urbanization throughout the early decades of the twentieth century was overwhelming even at the expense of the green areas of cities and rural areas. The provision of housing, employment and services to the growing population was a priority on the theme of “entertainment”. Thus, for the last three decades, the city's public parks and green areas have become increasingly popular in response to urban overcrowding and high urban densities, which resulted in environmental problems and visual pollution. The results of the urban tyranny against the green spaces in cities began to emerge; the city planners and decision-makers discovered that residents need gardens and parks no less than their needs for housing, work or services. The city, without a network of interconnected and gradual parks and public green areas, suffers from great environmental problems that put in danger its sustainability and the health of its citizens. In this dissertation, the character and the significance of public parks and green areas in the city shall be scrutinized. This will encompass the definition of history and roles of public parks at the city level; besides, what motivates the visitors to come and what they would be their needs in parks. Later, in the chapter 2, the factors that influence the design of public parks will examined; such as nature, social and physical factors and neighborhood data, and the choice of the park’s design systems will be conferred. Moreover, in the chapter 3, the design components of public park shall be enumerated; the physical, the aesthetic components and principles of parks’ design. Then, the design standards of public parks shall be appraised with their quantitative and qualitative aspects, this would include: the functions and services provided inside parks, the circulation system and paths as well as the plazas, the vegetation and water bodies and finally design criteria of the urban furniture inside the park. In the chapter 4, case studies from previous experiences shall be explored. The case studies examples concern two parks at the city center of Istanbul and Aleppo, they are Maçka Park in Istanbul/Turkey and The Public Park in Aleppo/Syria. Finally, the conclusion shall contain development remakes and results of the research and shall determine the future orientations of the research.

Una sistematica dei parchi
La definizione di parco che dà il Dizionario di Architettura ed Urbanistica è sorprendente. Il parco è anche recinto, "barco".
Quest'ambiguità spinge a sollevare una questione: se è vero che il parco, debitamente inteso, rappresenta effettivamente un recinto, è, forse, questa nozione estendibile al concetto di città come insieme di complessità  all' interno di una cinta muraria ?
La domanda dimostra che la categoria  parco, nel contesto del disegno del territorio e della città, occupa una posizione sempre più prossima alla pura sperimentazione.
Le possibilità che il "tipo" del parco offre sono molteplici, sia per la "scala" dell'intervento, sia per il fatto che il progetto degli spazi aperti trova, forse a causa di una sensibilizzazione operata dai mezzi di comunicazione, buona sorte presso il grande pubblico e, dunque, l'opinione pubblica è pronta ad osservare benevolmente interventi sul verde, salvo, poi, a non utilizzarli se realizzati. La ricostruzione della natura, se intesa solamente come piatta restituzione degli equilibri naturali, rischia di essere una finzione, una mimesi, una negazione di tutto ciò che c'è stato prima. Questo fenomeno trova un analogo nell'uso sconsiderato che gli architetti fanno dell' hi-tech che, mettendo in mostra elementi che poco hanno a che vedere con l'architettura, trascende la qualità del progetto per dimostrare al pubblico che qualcosa, bene o male, è stata fatta.
Il termine "progetto di parco" illustra chiaramente come all' origine ci sia, da parte dell'uomo, un intervento progettuale che non può, secondo chi scrive, dimenticarsi di quello che pre-esisteva.
Nel vasto panorama della cultura che concerne il parco, caratterizzato dalla presenza di numerose scuole di pensiero, è complesso riuscire a identificare una scala di rappresentazione alla quale ascrivere il parco stesso.  Non si può parlare genericamente di parco o di giardino. Le odierne molteplicità di rapporti e di scambio di dati fa sì che il parco non sia più solamente un luogo destinato all'ottocentesca esposizione di specie botaniche, così come il giardino non può più semplicemente essere assimilato all'orto o la porzione di terreno semplicemente destinata al "decoro" del quartiere.
E' soprattutto in relazione ai secoli precedenti che l'immagine del parco subisce una mutazione: se, difatti, nel periodo compreso tra il cinquecento ed il settecento il parco/barco/recinto è contenitore, in misura sempre maggiore, di geometrie e regole auree, popolato da divinità (il giardino di Orfeo ed Euridice)1 e se nell' ottocento questo non è più sorretto da proporzioni "sacre" ma è semplice recinto, contenitore, nella seconda metà del novecento il parco torna ad essere popolato da regole auree, segnali che si configurano attraverso il conflitto silenzioso e "sublime"2 tra uomo e natura.
E' dunque necessario, attraverso l'analisi di alcuni esempi significativi, stabilire una sistematica del progetto del parco contemporaneo.

Design proposal (2004) for a historical marker honoring the Lewis Family, who were Bahamian, and whose members settled on the banks of the New River in what became Fort Lauderdale sometime before 1792-1793.  Located in the Tarpon Bend neighborhood, a marker was built on the south bank of the river in 2006 and the expanded site became a park in 2010 and is now known as "Lewis Landing Park."
