Northern Syria

Para muchxs kurdxs, la lucha significa navegar todos los días entre una utopía y la realidad. El lado utópico es soñar con una sociedad democrática, comunal, ecológica y sin jerarquías ni privilegios; y el lado real es despertar con la guerra, la muerte, la pobreza y la humillación. La navegación entre estos dos puntos se refiere a una resistencia cotidiana colectiva y muchas micro-resistencias. Lxs kurdxs definimos estas resistencias con la palabra de "roj bi roj", que se refiere a la resistencia "día a día".

This book, presented as Ph.D dissertation at the University of Turin, studies the ivory decorating the royal furniture discovered by the François Thureau-Dangin in 1928 on the site Arslan Tash, in northern Syria, including the pieces later appeared on the art market and coming from the same site. The collections are today shared between different museums: Musée du Louvre, Archaeological Museum of Alep, Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe, Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, Metropolitan Museum New York, Bible Lands Museum Jerusalem and Ecole Biblique Jerusalem.
The book discusses the history of ivory studies, methodologies, the story of Arslan Tash excavations and ivory collections, and proposes a reconstruction of the ancient ivory production cycle, tools and techiques.
A detailed catalogue with 305 entries is completed by color pictures of the ivories' rectos and versoes taken in daylight and ultraviolet light and technical drawings.

The ancient site of Ras Shamra at Ugarit is located in Northern Syria on the Palestinian coast just south of the Orontes River. From 2000-1200 BCE, Ugarit was a flourishing center including a shipping port that had access to the entire Mediterranean. Although the surrounding area impacted its culture, the primary influence was from the seafaring culture of ancient Byblos. (AGL: 176.)

In 1929, a major archaeological discovery was made at Ras Shamra that included: cuneiform tablets; 2 tripartite temples very similar to Solomon’s temple in Jerusalem; a tremendous library that yielded a trilingual wordlist affording unprecedented new translations; plus numerous artifacts including female goddess figures. (AGL: 176.) This unique archaeological discovery contained divine Canaanite myths documenting El as chief father god and his divine consort, Athirat, the Ugaritic name for Hebrew Asherah. (ATLM: 8.)

A ‘faith system’ can be based on some simple beliefs on supernatural beings, but the ‘organized religion’ is characterized by a ‘faith-based doctrine’ with standardize worships, hierarchical structures, and organization of dogmatic rules and practices. The organized religion has been involving human individuals and social groups to be valued parts of a “greater community”. Although archaeological evidence take the earliest practice of supernatural beliefs back to 80,000 to 100,000 years before present, the senses of organized and intercommunal religious practices apparently did not began to evolve until the beginning of Neolithic throughout tenth millennium BC. The first sedentary people groups of different Pre-Pottery Neolithic (PPN) sites in Upper Mesopotamia such as Körtiktepe, Göbeklitepe, Çayönü, Tell ‘Abr 3, Jerf el Ahmar, Hasankeyif Höyük, Nevali Çori, and Qermez Dere often engaged with communal feast and constructed cult buildings, served their communal interest for centuries. Over time, some of these spiritual centers and sanctuaries became the promoter of intercommunal complex ritual systems, maybe the earliest form of ‘organized religion’. Citing some examples from these communal buildings as well as intercommunal and interregional shared symbolism, we attempt to review the position of the Pre-Pottery Neolithic in Upper Mesopotamia in the origin and development of organized form of religion.

The second half of the 3rd millennium BC represents the height of the urbanization process observed during the Early Bronze Age of northern Syria. In a geo-political sense, the Amuq Plain, located in southern Turkey, is situated in a strategic location and as such has long been described as a crossroads of Near Eastern cultures. Tell Tayinat has been identified as the largest settlement in the plain beginning in the early 3rd millennium BC; excavations conducted in the 1930s uncovered a series of levels dating to the 3rd millennium which formed the foundation of the chronological sequence for this time period. More recent excavations at the site have produced significant remains dating to the Early Bronze IVB (2300–2000 BC). This article presents preliminary results of petrographic analysis of 57 samples from the Early Bronze IVB ceramic assemblage, identifying five primary petro-fabrics, and seven outlier groups, and goes on to discuss the broader significance of these results with regard to other comparative petrographic data in the Orontes area.

In 1999 the discovery of a number of door sealings in the palace at Mozan, ancient Urkeš, with the impressions of the seal of Tarʼam-Agade, a Naram-Sin’s daughter previously unknown, threw a new light not only on the history of the site but also on the important role of Akkadian women in diplomacy and international relations. This paper looks back to some objects belonging to Akkadian women excavated elsewhere in Northern Syria, already known in the literature, with the aim to bring further food for thought on the question in the light of the Mozan evidence.

15 Mart 2011 tarihinde Suriye’deki Beşar Esad yönetimine karşı barışçıl gösterilerle başlayan isyan dalgası, ülkenin tamamına yayılarak ciddi bir yıkımı da beraberinde getirdi. Zaman içerisinde durum, yüz binlerce kişinin yaşamını yitirdiği, milyonlarcasının da yerlerinden edildiği topyekûn bir iç savaşa dönüştü. Gelinen noktada Suriye iç savaşı; devlet dışı silahlı aktörlerin yükselişi, mülteci krizi, bölgesel çatışmalar ve uluslararası askeri müdahaleler gibi durumlara tanıklık ettiğimiz küresel bir sorun halini almıştır. Rusya ve İran tarafından desteklenen Suriye rejimi birçok noktada gücünü konsolide etmiş olsa da karşı karşıya olduğumuz durum ‘parçalı bir Suriye haritası’dır. Afrin, Fırat Kalkanı ve Barış Pınarı Bölgesi’nde yönetsel uygulamaları devreye sokan Türkiye, bu bölgelerin hakimiyetini de elinde bulundurmaktadır. Türkiye’nin diğer alanlardan farklı olarak yalnızca askeri düzeyde varlık gösterdiği İdlib sahası ise radikal grupların kümelendiği, 4 milyona yakın insanın yaşadığı ve Türkiye’nin Rusya’yla karşı karşıya gelmesi potansiyelini haiz bir ‘yüksek risk alanı’ olmayı sürdürmektedir. Fırat Nehri’nin doğusu ve batısında farklı düzeylerde varlık gösteren Türkiye, zaman zaman burada bulunan aktörlerin de meydan okumalarıyla karşılaşmaktadır. Dolayısıyla Türkiye hem Suriye ile sınır komşusu olması hem de bölgeyle ilişkisi ve iddiası açısından karşı karşıya olduğu bu zorlukları kendi çıkarları açısından yönetmek durumundadır. Bu nedenle; sahada ne olup bittiği, hangi aktörlerin yer aldığı ve bu aktörlerin motivasyonlarının ne olduğu önem taşımaktadır. Küresel, bölgesel ve Türkiye’yi ilgilendiren sorunlara uygulanabilir çözümler üretmek amacıyla 2009 yılında kurulan Küresel Siyasal Eğilimler Birimi (GPoT), Suriye’deki iç savaş 10. yılına girerken alanında uzman isimlerle görüşmeler gerçekleştirerek bir dosya çalışmasını hayata geçirmeye karar vermiştir. “Türkiye’nin Suriye’de Karşı Karşıya Olduğu Zorluklar” adlı bu dosya çalışması 4 başlıkta toplanmıştır. Bunlar; Türkiye-Rusya İlişkileri, Türkiye-ABD İlişkileri, Göç Baskısı ve Sahadaki Durum ve Aktörlerdir. ‘Sahadaki Durum ve Aktörler’ konusu için GPoT Proje Asistanı Yasin Küçükkaya (Y. K.), 26 Mart 2020 tarihinde ORSAM Levant Çalışmaları Koordinatörü Oytun Orhan (O. O.) ile bir röportaj gerçekleştirmiştir. Röportajda öne çıkan soru ve cevaplar aşağıda verilmiştir.

Der Krieg wäre jedoch vermeidbar gewesen, wenn die internationale Diplomatie die Logik des Stellvertreterkrieges durchbrochen hätte. Wie konnte es zu diesem Angriffskrieg kommen? Dieser Beitrag rekonstruiert wichtige Schritte staatlicher Akteure auf dem Weg dorthin.
