The ancient site of Ras Shamra at Ugarit is located in Northern Syria on the Palestinian coast just south of the Orontes River. From 2000-1200 BCE, Ugarit was a flourishing center including a shipping port that had access to the entire Mediterranean. Although the surrounding area impacted its culture, the primary influence was from the seafaring culture of ancient Byblos. (AGL: 176.) In 1929, a major archaeological discovery was made at Ras Shamra that included: cuneiform tablets; 2 tripartite temples very similar to Solomon’s temple in Jerusalem; a tremendous library that yielded a trilingual wordlist affording unprecedented new translations; plus numerous artifacts including female goddess figures. (AGL: 176.) This unique archaeological discovery contained divine Canaanite myths documenting El as chief father god and his divine consort, Athirat, the Ugaritic name for Hebrew Asherah. (ATLM: 8.)

Tel Taanach or Ta‘Anach was an ancient royal city of the Canaanites. It was a well–recognized trade center located on the border of Esdraelon, just south of Megiddo. Currently it is identified with the small village of Ta’annuk in the West Bank near Jenin, Palestine. Primary archaeological discoveries are: a pottery libation or cult stand with abundant iconography; standing female figures with drums; 10th century altars; and pre-exilic seals. (TL: 37-38.)

In the Hammurabian Dynasty, the northern cities of Mesopotamia fell to the Babylonian army led by Hammurabi c. 1750 BCE (or 1792-1750). In conjunction with this defeat was the introduction of the Hammurabi Laws that replaced former marriage laws. * (Hammurabi also instituted the Hieros Gamos.) ** Previous to the Codex of Hammurabi, the domicile of the husband and wife (consort/partner?) was in the home of the wife’s family. This matrilocal arrangement was known as a beena marriage. In the beena marriage, women had divorce rights plus certain other rights and autonomy.

King Solomon began preparations for the construction of the First Temple in 970 BCE in the old city of Jerusalem. This was done in conjunction with Hiram, King of Tyre, who provided timber from as far as Lebanon. The temple was to house numerous treasures including the menorah, the Ark of the Covenant, and the goddess Shekinah who dwelt in the Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle. In Yamashita’s dissertation, The Goddess Asherah, he also discusses that sacred prostitution was practiced. (GA: 128.) Women had a special recognition in the temple and were actively engaged in the cult [culture] of Asherah, including the weaving of the battim as possibly a type of baldachin (canopy). (II K 23.7.) (COA: 29; II K 23.7; GHW: 213.) (WRSA.)

The Temple of Solomon was home to the Ark of the Covenant and the goddess Shekhinah, (synonymous with emanation (NHI)) who dwelt in the Tabernacle. (Ex 40: 38.) This pre–exilic period included shrines and temples of gods and goddesses where various non–Yahwistic Pagan rites and rituals were practiced. Women were in attendance as sacred prostitutes and in other cultic capacities. Female deities included Asherah, Anath, and Ishtar. When Solomon’s Temple was destroyed in 586 BCE, the Jews were exiled to Babylon. Under Ezra and Nehemiah and via the benevolence of Cyrus, King of Persia (Iran) they returned to Palestine in 538 BCE, but without Shekhinah, the feminine [female] presence of Yahweh. The temple was rebuilt in 515 - [538] BCE, and later restored by Ezra, c. 458 BCE. Judaism followed with the completion of Laws and The Prophets (of Israel) in the Hebrew Bible and the reconstruction of the second temple. (MG: 449-454, 640-1; BFV; VH: 6; TET.)

Hieros Gamos. The mother of the gods embodied unequalled preeminence including royal ascendancy to the throne through matrilineal lineage. (WA.) Hieros Gamos frequently included apotheosis (deification) of the king plus land stewardship. (CDBL: 132-133, WDSS0: 182-3.) Selected examples are: Egyptian Hatshepsut –Thothmes; Middle Elamite period Goddess Kiririsha and gods Inshoshimak and Houmban; Goddess Anahita and King Narseh’s investiture (PHM: 188) as legitimacy of male kings was only through the mother’s (matrilineal) side (WA: 233); Phrygian Matar Cybele (Kybele) and her son –lover Attis (CAA: 18-20, MG: 398-400); and god – son – husband Kabeiros (Kadmilos, Korybas) of Samothracian Mother Goddess. (GOG: 87.)

The Second Temple, Israel’s last ancient sanctuary was constructed after the Babylon exile. (Ezra 1.2-4.) “The temple was rebuilt between [538]-515, and later restored by Ezra, c. 458 BCE. Judaism followed with the completion of Laws and The Prophets (of Israel) in the Hebrew Bible and the reconstruction of the Second Temple.” (According to Meyers, this temple actually spans close to six centuries.) (TET: 33.) Unlike Solomon’s Temple, the role and function of goddesses, priestesses, non–officiating females, plus non–Yahwistic (i.e. idolatry) rites and rituals were restricted, redefined, reduced, or fully eliminated. Lincoln says that “sacrifice and the use of statues ceased to form the center of ritual practice, and material mediations of every sort diminished in their import.” (GAD: 79.) Examples are: the displacement of the Shekhinah (the female face of Yahweh (HG: 105-11)); removal of all sun images and bronze (Asherah) Brazen Serpents (II K 18.4); and replacement of Asherah’s priestess and women musicians with male Levite priests. (RDW: 139.) History underscores a ‘pillar to post’ removal/re–introduction of Asherah’s sacred trees–groves–poles (MOO: 376) the so–called abominable images of inexplicable Yahwistic jealousy (Dt 4.16-18; II K 21) resulting in ongoing closures/re–openings of local shrines (RJW: 274) and use of masseboth (sacred stones). (MOO: 375.) In support of Yahwistic monotheism, “the prophets, with-in the general framework of their over-all opposition to any form of idolatry, spoke up against the Asherah cult [culture] in particular.” (TGA: 49.)

The Canaanite Nahariyah temple center is Middle Bronze Age, 2200-1570 BCE. * (CAH: Vol. 1I, Part 1, 111.) The Nahariyah site, excavated between 1954-1955, CE is located about 100 meters from the Mediterranean shore on the seacoast just south of Tyre and Sidon. This center, also similar to Megiddo, includes three temple layers. As Nahariyah is an isolated sanctuary with no associated settlements, it gives rise to the possibility that it was a wayside shrine or ancient caravanserai with an adjacent temple room as was Kuntillet. (CAH: Vol. 1I, Part 1, 110-111.) * (Alternative dating for Middle Bronze Age Crete is, 2000-1450 BCE.)

Asherah’s major temple sites. The city of Lachish was first a Canaanite site and later Israelite. Of the ancient Judah cities, it was second only to Jerusalem. Lachish occupied a major tell (summit mound) extending over 18 acres. The location is in the foothills of Judah, 25 miles southwest of Jerusalem. (WLM: 36.) For this Lachish entry, the Canaanite temple date of 1500 BCE is most relative but the Lachish summit has a long ancient history. Starting with Pottery Neolithic, other primary BCE occupation dates are: 5500-4500, Pottery Neolithic; 4500-3300, Chalcolithic; 3300-3000, Early Bronze Age; followed by the 538-37, Persian and Hellenistic periods. (WLM: 40.)

Genesis says that Abram’s family (later Abraham the first Hebrew) was ordered to leave the city of their Fathers, Ur (Urfa or Greek Edessa) of the Chaldeans for Haran in Northwestern Mesopotamia. “Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot the son of Haran, and his daughter – in – law the wife (consort/ mother goddess/Hieros Gamos) * of Abram and made them leave Ur of the Chaldaeans to go the land of Canaan” (Gn 11:31).
