Media Communication Technologies

This article draws upon the author's experience teaching first-year college students to theorize the interrelationships between popular culture, media technologies and cultural practice. The course confronts key habitual beliefs about technology, then develops a critical pedagogy for their examination that draws upon popular-culture discussions of technologies, actual as well as imagined. By engaging with popular culture, the connections between devices, enabling knowledge about uses and the development of dominant uses become clearer and concrete, thus assisting the emergence of a critical understanding of technologies in society.

Online availability of information creates new ways of communication. This provides a variety of ways for users to interact, though chat, messaging email, video, voice chat, file sharing, blogging and discussing groups. The social networking sites have become one of the dominant cultural phenomena in this digital age. It enables us to communicate anywhere in this world and to anyone who shares interests and activities across political, social, economic and geographical borders. This paper analysed how new media specially social networking sites change the ways of communication, allows the public to critique and discuss fearlessly social and political issues and share the news information as well as message and leading to active participation in social movements and social revolutions.

Research concerning computer hackers generally focuses on how to stop them; far less attention is given to the texts they create. Phrack, an online hacker journal that has run almost continuously since 1985, is an important touchstone in hacker literature, widely read by both hackers and telephone and network security professionals. But beyond its instantiation as a compendium of illicit technical knowledge, Phrack was, above all, a rhetorical publication. The files in each issue of Phrack created a shared rhetorical vision concerning the place of the hacker underground within society and in relation to law enforcement officials, as well as what it means to be a hacker. This essay examines two important events in the evolution of the hacker movement through the lens of Phrack—Operation Sundevil and the arrest of Kevin Mitnick. How these events were framed in Phrack both shaped and reflected emerging shifts in hacker collective identity.

Traditional hard law tools and processes are struggling to keep up with the rapid pace of innovation in many emerging technologies sectors. As a result, policymakers in the United States rely increasingly on less formal “soft law” governance mechanisms to address concerns surrounding many newer technologies. This Article explores four case studies from different information technology areas where soft law mechanisms have already been utilized to address governance concerns. These four sectoral case studies include domain name management, content oversight, privacy policy, and cybersecurity matters. After considering the various soft law mechanisms used to address those issues, the Article concludes with some general thoughts about the effectiveness of those approaches and what lessons those case studies might hold for the use of soft law in other emerging technology sectors and contexts.

In a comprehensive approach, this research focuses on the evolution of the practices and the journalistic representations in a multimedia environment. It is based on an ethnographic method including 56 days of observation and the analysis of 101 semi-directive interviews of journalists and press professionals. These interviews were collected in 11 belgian newsrooms : Le Soir, La Libre Belgique / La Dernière Heure, Les Éditions de l’Avenir, Sudpresse, Le Vif/L’Express, 7sur7, L’Écho, la RTBF, RTL, Belga and BFM Today. We have applied a thematic analysis (Paillé & Mucchieli, 2003) to this empirical data that we coded thanks to the software Nvivo 8.
This research is structured in 4 parts. As the first one states the research method, the second one proposes an inventory of the online journalism’s situation in the french-speaking part of Belgium. It explains the kind of relationships these webjournalists maintain inside their professional group. A third part deals with the way in which the new professional environment changes the journalistic practices of sourcing, news gathering, fact checking, writing and moderation of the participative spaces. The last part tackles the issue of the reconfiguration of the journalistic representations. It is, among others things, about the social role of the journalists and about the impact of the managerial strategies (integration, implication, economical) on these representations. The issue of the representations regarding online journalism is covered thanks to a more quantitative approach of inter-group comparison that we consider as exploratory because it is made up not of statistical analysis but of descriptive counts.
This thesis shows, among other things, that the journalists, online or offline, are particularly critical towards their profession and their own practices. We interpret the intensity of this critical activity by referring to the conceptual frame established by L. Boltanski and E. Chiapello (1999). This research wishes to highlight the role of this auto-criticism in the unceasing recomposition of the profession. Over several newsrooms’ reorganizations, the management may use these critics expressed by the journalists in order to establish a situation that will be judged as more equitable by the involved journalists. This is the case of the strategy established at L’Écho which integrates the online journalists into the symbolically valuated tasks of the profession. The auto-criticism also allows journalists to continuously adjust their discursive identity, to auto-justify their imperfect practices in a dialogical process while perpetually reaffirming the reasons of their engagement towards the profession.

The question of how and why people adopt technologies is an area that has received great scrutiny, but less attention is given to those who willingly choose to avoid particular technologies. This article considers current models of technology adoption and explores how technology influences us as a society and individually, paying special attention to how large-scale shifts in technological change come to bear on individuals who choose not to adopt specific technologies. By combining scholarship in the information sciences with observations from media ecology theorists, this article proposes a more nuanced view of technology adoption and resistance.

Los temas más referidos y que ocupan más tiempo en la televisión son los que pueden contribuir a crear una visión sesgada del mundo (Gerbner, 1976). Pero, al estudiar los detalles, se comprueba que esa coincidencia temática aparente tiene matices que marcan la diferencia. Aunque se trata de los mismos contenidos, varía el enfoque; y lo que parecía contradictorio, luego resulta coherente con la línea editorial de cada cadena.

This paper is a thesis chapter that explores "age" as a social construction in newspaper media representations of professional football and tennis. Mediated sport discourses of international, professional sport may be viewed as cultural space in which the age complex takes shape. It is an environment constructed by, and consistently reframed by, age-related discourses that intersect with other aspects of identity – ‘race,’ ethnicity, gender, and sexuality – to create and reinforce inequality. For this reason, discourses of sport are excellent sites to examine age-related hierarchies in order to better understand the ways in which age is used as a cultural resource to inform and instruct broader relationships of power.

The assimilation and interaction between television and the Internet has grown significantly in recent years, boosting the penetration of the connected and hybrid television, until the HbbTV (Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV) standard appeared. In this article we analyze the keys to this standard and make a quantitative study on its implications for the audience in terms of quality of contents, synergies between the Internet, television and social networks, inclusion of interactive advertising and other parameters of the new scenario.

Informal communities of Russian artists and intellectuals during the late Soviet years practiced a “politics of indistinction.” They claimed to be uninterested in anything political and differentiated themselves from ordinary “Soviet citizens,” whether supporters of or dissenters from the system. However, their apolitical lifestyles and pursuits contributed greatly to creating the conditions for making the collapse of the Soviet state imminent. Close examination of one such group, the Necrorealists, raises a set of questions that are central for an understanding of momentous and unexpected social transformations, and of the concept of "politics" more broadly

In this feature article two DIY (do-it-yourself) film projects are examined from perspectives of resemiosis (transformations in meaning-making) and the textual production practices of contemporary multimedia authorship. These practices are considered as evolving in a complex media ecology. The two films analysed are Gzim Rewind (Sweden, 2011) by Knutte Wester, and In-World War (USA, expected 2011) by DJ Bad Vegan. The films are currently in production and involve many collaborators. Both films have themes of war and include film scenes that are ‘machinima’ – real-time animation made in 3D graphic environments – within live action film scenes. Machinima harnesses the possibilities of reappropriating digital software, game engines, and other tools available in digital media. War-related stories are resemiotized in the machinima film scenes as meanings are transformed in the story’s shift from a war game context to a film context. Thus machinima exemplifies how DIY multimedia storytellers explore new ways to tell and to ‘animate’ stories. The article contains four parts: an introduction to machinima and the notions of resemiosis and authorial practice; a presentation of DIY filmmaking as a practice that intertwines with new networked economics; an analysis of the two DIY film projects; and a discussion of implications including issues relating to IP (intellectual property) and copyrights when reappropriating digital assets from commercial media platforms.

O artigo reflete uma investigação preliminar sobre a utilização das novas tecnologias de informação e comunicação – especialmente aquelas ligadas à internet – pelas emissoras FM comerciais paulistanas. O objetivo  principal é mostrar em que nível ferramentas como podcasts, blogs e outros serviços interativos são usados para fidelizar a audiência. No percurso, o texto alia essas reflexões ao referencial de Bernard Miège sobre as novas TICs, em uma tentativa de demonstrar os processos de enraizamento social das tecnologias e como isso afeta o rádio como veículo de comunicação.

Oral history narrations give a detailed account of how social change actually happened. Subscribing to a holistic view, this paper pursues the directions of the historical changes in the Turkish media ecosystem since 1980's through the narrations of 50 media professionals and media consumers. We used Nvivo for qualitative analyses and KNIME for quantitative analysis of narrations. These narrations gave us important clues on how people adapted themselves to such fundamental changes in media technologies. Our analysis revealed that media professionals were crafty enough to be innovative in adapting themselves into the new work practices, and had developed personal practical solutions to certain emerging technical problems. Media consumers on the other hand, were enthusiastic enough towards the new technologies. It is evident that the Turkish society in general adapted itself to a sweeping change in media technology and created a kind of techno-culture typical to developing countries which principally import such technologies as a part of their modernization processes.

Resumo A inclusão da fonte visual (fotografia e vídeo) no jornalismo digital está ganhando importância na área da multimídia. Os recursos principais da imprensa digital são a multimídia, o hipertexto e a interatividade. A multimídia está num processo inicial de evolução. A missão desta pesquisa é observar empiricamente o uso dos recursos visuais pela imprensa digital pure player. Estes meios de comunicação tentam aproveitar as novas possibilidades multimídia na elaboração e apresentação dos conteúdos. Analisámos empiricamente a inclusão de vídeo e de fotografia na estrutura multimídia (texto, fotografia, vídeo, áudio, infografismo e programas de animação) em quatro jornais digitais (Libertad Digital e El Plural, em espanhol, e Vilaweb e e-Notícies, em catalão) analisados por gêneros jornalísticos.

А именно, предусматривать не только прямое воздействие на ребенка, которого следует ввести в общество, закрепив в его позиции соответствующие социально-культурные навыки. Должна учитываться и необходимость опосредованного влияния на судьбу детей-сирот, которых принимает общество. Это должно быть, прежде всего, воздействие на состояние общественного мнения, от которого в немалой степени зависит, как принимает общество детей-сирот, какие двери перед ними открывает, а какие, наоборот, закрывает наглухо.

Liberationist theologies gave rise to a re-emphasise on Christian life as being primarily historical life, and Christian spirituality as rooted in faithful and honest attention to the immediacy of historical reality. But for many people living in media-saturated, overdeveloped societies, any distinction between actual reality and a mediated pseudo-reality is blurred. Another facet of life in a mediasaturated context is that of being regularly confronted with impressions of destitution, violence and ecological degradation whilst at the same time being further distanced from the realities represented through communications media and their 'virtualizing' tendency. This rapid change in our relation to reality has, I suggest, profound theological and missiological consequences.

O artigo faz uma revisão de estudos e uma breve reflexão sobre o desenvolvimento da linguagem radiofônica até os dias atuais e a tensão que o rádio sofre com a internet. Parte da premissa que as principais características da linguagem radiofônica foram aos poucos sendo deixadas de lado. Restou a força da voz falada na programação e a importância do locutor como fonte de vinculação entre emissora e ouvinte, aliada às
novas ferramentas de comunicação e a possibilidade de expansão de conteúdo radiofônico na internet.

Oral history narrations give a detailed account of how social change actually happened. Abstrakt: Celem artykułu jest scharakteryzowanie mediatyzacji życia codziennego młodych użytkowników, która odbywa się dzięki stosowaniu smartfonów. W pierwszej kolejności przedstawiono podstawową teorię medioznawczą dotyczącą wykorzystania smarfonów w życiu codziennym,
mieszczącą się w nurcie badań nad mediatyzacją. Określono specyfikę badanych technologii, to
jest takie cechy, jak mobilność, podręczność, prywatność. Przywołano również najnowsze wyniki
zastanych badań sondażowych dotyczących korzystania z technologii mobilnych w Polsce.
W drugiej części artykułu zaprezentowano wyniki wstępnych badań nad pierwszorzędnymi
zastosowaniami smartfonów przez młodych ludzi w Polsce. Wyniki przeprowadzonych analiz pozwoliły na wyodrębnienie kategorii tak zwanych technologii pierwszego kontaktu oraz określenie
pierwszorzędnych funkcjonalności, mediatyzujących aktywności codzienne. Tym samym uzasadniono znaczenie technologii pierwszego kontaktu w procesach stałej, codziennej mediatyzacji życia młodych osób. Wyznaczono ponadto potencjalny kierunek dalszych badań.

Included in the University of Northampton's submission to the 2014 Research Excellence Framework and graded as being of a 'quality that is recognised internationally in terms of originality, significance, and rigour' by our external at Cambridge. This paper explores how the London Olympic Bid Committee (LOBC) sought to gain the popular support required for London’s bid for the 2012 Olympic Games by attempting to influence the journalists of the UK newspaper with the greatest readership to communicate their discourse to the host urban population. The research draws on Michel Foucault’s concept of discourse to investigate whether and more importantly how the journalists of the Sun articulated the key statements that the LOBC sought to convey to the UK public in their coverage of London’s bid for the 2012 Games in order to discover how collusion and tension between the discourses and practices of bid committees and those of journalists affect the statements articulated to the reader.

The study analyses the approach of media students to different new media platforms and the way they use these platforms. It aims to analyse how seriously students approach new media facilities by applying a methodology which is a mix of both quantitative (questionnaire survey and percentage analysis) and qualitative (focus group discussion analysis) methods to identify patterns of Internet usage among students. As there is a relation between use and gratification, we can determine a relationship between approach and use patterns, as approach determines the media and how it is to be used.

This qualitative study explores the impact of potential linguistic, technical and educational hegemonies on the learning outcomes for English language students in Hebron, Palestine, and Padova, Italy, who were involved in the Soliya Connect Program, a telecollaboration project developed to explore critical issues that divide the ‘West’ and the ‘predominantly Arab and Muslim world’. The project is organised around weekly synchronous moderated video discussions between students from the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East and North Africa. The authors first discuss the hegemonies that might be at play in this telecollaboration project and examine the specific power imbalances on the macro-, mesoand micro-levels that students in Hebron and Padova might experience. Resumen: La publicidad es de momento la principal fuente de ingresos para el periodismo digital. La cruzada de los grandes grupos multimedia por establecer muros de pago, en diversas modalidades, no es incompatible con el hecho de que los recursos publicitarios sean la vía financiera más habitual para los medios en un entorno virtual. De ahí la utilidad para las empresas informativas de conocer la tipología de inclusión de esas inserciones. Ello mejora las estrategias de negocio, incluso las que combinan versión en papel y digital. En el Grupo de Investigación sobre Periodismo Digital y Banda Ancha 1 hemos llevado a cabo un estudio empírico sobre el periodismo español, a partir de los casos de las versiones en Internet de los diarios de más audiencia, El Mundo y El País. Detectamos una presencia elevada de inserciones de publicidad. Los formatos predominantes son el banner y el robapáginas. The internet has empowered a large number of users to blog on whatever subject they like through remarks, articles, ideas, dialogues and interactive comments supported by other content. Web pages have granted people access to a private sphere where they can publish or share with others their opinions, news and comments in a sort of journal that has come to be known as a blog.Blogs started to emerge in their current form in 1996,when American software developer Dave Winer launched his site dedicated to writing news and posting relevant reactions and comments on a wide range of issues

Numerous similar web sites were developed and continue to multiply, no longer restricted to a certain country but rather becoming global. As blogs have proliferated, they have grown diverse and become a phenomenon that attracts a large number of youth. At the same time, they provide a rich arena where knowledge and news are shared and public opinion is formed.In Egypt there was limited interest in blogs until 2001, when the number of Egyptian blogs started to grow each year, providing youth with a refuge where they could easily express themselves and their beliefs without restrictions. Blogs proved an effective means for digital communication among a large number of segments of the public who were not acquainted with each other outside the cyber world. Thus, blogging attracted the new generation of politicians, authors and journalists interested in collaborating either as readers or writers. In this regard, blogs evolved into an outlet for the expression of opinion, talents and interests, for venting feelings and desires and for sharing knowledge. It was to be expected that the Egyptian blogging movement would interact with current events in the Egyptian and Arab public spheres from 2005 to the present time. From 2006 to 2008, a number of demonstrations and expressions of real political protest were associated in one way or another with cyber-protests on the internet, tapping into the massive public mobilization of youth on political blogs. There followed a degree of confusion between blogging and rumors both on the part of  bloggers and readers. Thus, in recent years, Egyptian blogs have grown on a wider scale, creating anew virtual community that enjoys quite strong social, cultural and political impact on the real society.

In the absence of relevant, accurate data about blogging, there arose simplistic conceptions that dismissed the phenomenon as a way to spend leisure time and circulate rumors. Such perceptions found an audience among governmental agencies and a large segment of the public. For that reason ,IDSC initiated a study on this phenomenon as part of the project titled "The Blogosphere in Egypt"implemented within IDSC’s work plan in January 2008. The project aims to study the Egyptian blogosphere in terms of its importance in strengthening democracy and the information society.

This report stands as the first output of the project. It was designed to provide the reader with a general framework of basic knowledge about blogs, their importance, the scope of their spread, their characteristics and their contents on one hand, and bloggers' characteristics and interests on the other. For this purpose, the report is divided into four sections: 1. the significance of blogs and the appearance of the blogosphere on the global level; 2. main features of Egyptian blogs; 3.a content analysis of these blogs; and  4. discerning the special characteristics of Egyptian bloggers.

Los barómetros del CIS muestran que el paro, la economía, la clase política o la corrupción se consideraban como los principales problemas del país. Antes del 20N, para el 39,2% de los ciudadanos la política producía desconfianza. Pero los medios de comunicación tampoco constituían para ellos un canal de referencia de calidad, aportando sólo 4,97 puntos de confianza.

A partir del estudio previo del “Consumo de noticias durante la campaña electoral del 20N en la prensa online española” se realiza un análisis del discurso de la participación ciudadana en estos medios. Se presenta una investigación de análisis cualitativo terminológico de los comentarios de los ciudadanos, basado en las noticias más leídas sobre la campaña electoral del 20N en los diarios online elpais.es y elmundo.es.  El fin es determinar si los ciudadanos usan la información política como dinamización social, si se dejan arrastrar por la mera confrontación y la espectacularización de la información o si su mensaje se centra en una desafección política.

The aspects of the project that seemed to contribute most to the creation of a third space were found to be: (a) the role of trained facilitators in addressing power imbalances, (b) the dialogic approach to conflict that the program is based on, and (c) the use of audio-video conferencing which humanises the experience and increases empathy among students.

These interviews were collected in 11 belgian newsrooms : Le Soir, La Libre Belgique / La Derniere Heure, Les Editions de l’Avenir, Sudpresse, Le Vif/L’Express, 7sur7, L’Echo, la RTBF, RTL, Belga and BFM Today. We have applied a thematic analysis (Paille & Mucchieli, 2003) to this empirical data that we coded thanks to the software Nvivo 8. This research is structured in 4 parts. As the first one states the research method, the second one proposes an inventory of the online journalism’s situation in the french-speaking part of Belgium. It explains the kind of relationships these webjournalists maintain inside their professional group. A third part deals with the way in which the new professional environment changes the journalistic practices of sourcing, news gathering, fact checking, writing and moderation of the participative spaces. The last part tackles the issue of the reconfiguration of the journalistic representations. It is, among others things, about the social role of the journalists and about the impact of the managerial strategies (integration, implication, economical) on these representations. The issue of the representations regarding online journalism is covered thanks to a more quantitative approach of inter-group comparison that we consider as exploratory because it is made up not of statistical analysis but of descriptive counts. This thesis shows, among other things, that the journalists, online or offline, are particularly critical towards their profession and their own practices. We interpret the intensity of this critical activity by referring to the conceptual frame established by L. Boltanski and E. Chiapello (1999). This research wishes to highlight the role of this auto-criticism in the unceasing recomposition of the profession. Over several newsrooms’ reorganizations, the management may use these critics expressed by the journalists in order to establish a situation that will be judged as more equitable by the involved journalists. This is the case of the strategy established at L’Echo which integrates the online journalists into the symbolically valuated tasks of the profession. The auto-criticism also allows journalists to continuously adjust their discursive identity, to auto-justify their imperfect practices in a dialogical process while perpetually reaffirming the reasons of their engagement towards the profession.
