Longinus' theory of the Sublime

Longinus introduced sublimity as a type of eminence or excellence of discourse, especially in literature and oratory. In ancient times, poetry was believed to be the finest product of art and this can be traced in the writings of great Greek thinkers like Aristotle, Plato and Longinus. Longinus advocates for the assimilation of certain qualities which, together, produces sublime feelings or expressions. It should be noted that there is distinction between grandeur and sublimity; grandeur produces amazement and wonder, but sublimity encompasses a combination of wonder and an ability to transport the mind with an irresistible power. Longinus declares that Sublimity, if produced at the right moment, tears everything up like a whirlwind, and exhibits the orator’s whole power as a single blow. This paper will try to investigate different stages of the ‘sublime’ as a style in poetry within the rhetorical tradition of the ancient Greco-Roman world, its core nature, and the way it operates to build the soul of a lofty art product. It will also try to re-understand Longinus’s theory of sublimity, its importance and relevance.

The sublime (das Erhabene) is known as a concept of aesthetics and literary criticism. In his Greek treatise On the Sublime, Longinus (or Pseudo-Longinus) examines surprising, overwhelming and elevating moments in literature. Such moments are extraordinary because of contents (‘great thoughts’, and thematic markers like heights, mountains, sunlight, lightning, seas, etc.) or form (figures of speech, composition, diction). Longinus focuses on Greek texts of the past from Homer to Demosthenes, but he also mentions sculpture, and he draws attention to non-Greek writers: Cicero and Moses (the creation of earth and light in Genesis). Recent scholarship has illuminated the role of the sublime in the ancient Greek world before Longinus (Porter 2016) and it has shown how the sublime (as presented by Longinus, but also by Kant and Burke) can cast new light on the workings of Latin literature (especially Vergil, Ovid, and Lucan). This conference aims to explore whether and how we can speak about the sublime in different cultures, periods and contexts, following Longinus’ invitation, who points to Polyclitus, Cicero and the Hebrew Bible.

One of the unsolved mysteries surrounding the treatise On the Sublime concerns the relationship between emotion (πάθος) and the sublime (ὕψος).1 It is obvious that emotions play a central role in On the Sublime. The author, whom I will call Longinus, invites us to recognize the sublime in Ajax' proud prayer to Zeus on the battlefield (Iliad 17.645-647), Sappho's ecstatic love song (fragment 31), Orestes' insane expressions of fear (Euripides, Orestes 255-257), and innumerable other emotional passages from archaic and classical Greek literature.2 But not all sublime passages are emotional: Longinus tells us that there are many 'sublime moments without emotion' (ὕψη δίχα πάθους) and he offers as an example the attack on the Olympian gods by Otus and Ephialtes: They yearned to pile Ossa on Olympus, and Pelion, with its waving forests, on Ossa, so that heaven might be scaled. And this they would have accomplished …3 hom. Od. 11.315-317 What makes these Homeric lines sublime (in Longinus' interpretation) is probably the superhuman undertaking, the inconceivable height of three mountains piled upon each other (i.e. ὕψος in a literal sense), and the suggestion that the attempt might have succeeded.4 For Longinus these lines are sublime and great, but not emotional. Likewise there are rhetorical genres, like eulogies, ceremonial speeches, and showpieces (τὰ ἐγκώμια καὶ τὰ πομπικὰ καὶ ἐπιδεικτικά), which have elements of dignity and sublimity, while lacking emo-1 Previous discussions of the role of pathos in

[91] Mit Gewicht hatte Curtius diese Boileau-Schelte an den Schluß seines großen Buchs gesetzt, um mit »Longinus« auch noch die neue Schöpfungsästhetik im 18. Jahrundert aus den Topoi der Antike begründen zu können. Daß Curtius sich »so täuschen« konnte [92], markiert freilich nur den Preis für die literaturhistorische Epochendefinition einer französischen Klassik aus dem »rationale[n] Grundzug des französischen Geistes« [93] im 17. Jahrhundert, durch dessen angebliche Vorherrschaft einzig die Einheit der Konstruktion zu gewinnen war. Die Zweideutigkeit Boileaus stört die Eindeutigkeit der Epochendefinition. Deswegen war René Bray in seinem maßgebenden Buch über die »formation de la doctrine classique en France« dem Sublimen aus dem Weg gegangen, hatte Aristoteles und Horaz mit ihren Poetiken, nicht aber Longin als Gewährsmänner der »charte du classicisme« genannt und den "Traité du Sublime" selbst in den Ausführungen zum merveilleux, obwohl die Schrift das Stichwort im Untertitel führte, ausgeklammert.[94]

"Zelles komparatistischer Studie (Siegen, Habil.-Schr. 1995) liegt die These zugrunde, daß zur Bedingung der Ästhetik die Reflexion auf das ›Andere‹ zum Schönen gehört. Der systematische Ansatz wird anhand verschiedener historischer Modelle verifiziert. Den Ausgangspunkt bildet die Querelle des Anciens et des Modernes. Namentlich anhand von Boileaus Longin-Rezeption wird gezeigt, wie die ästhetische Theorie sich mit Hilfe von Kategorien etabliert, die den herrschenden Formenkodex unterlaufen: »beau désordre«, »sublimité«, das »je ne sais quoi« und »beau relatif« (u. a.). Die antithetische Bezüglichkeit der ästhetischen Kategorien setze sich in den anschließenden Epochen fort. Zelle schlüsselt die komplementären Begriffspaare auf: das Schöne und das Erhabene (u. a. Burke, Kant, Schiller), das Naive und das Sentimentalische, das Objektive und das Interessante (F. Schlegel), das Klassische und das Romantische (A.W. Schlegel), das Schöne und das Häßliche, das Apollinische und das Dionysische. Überall konstituiere sich die ästhetische Theorie dadurch, daß das harmonisch Schöne durch Momente der Entgrenzung übertrumpft werde: Hinter den wechselnden Inhalten der Begriffe macht Zelle eine epochengreifende Struktur transparent. Sie wird von einer zweifachen Perspektive her beleuchtet. Zum einen deutet Zelle die »doppelte Ästhetik« anthropologisch. Er bezieht die ästhetischen Kategorien auf zeitgenössische anthropologische Anschauungen (Leib-Seele-Dualismus etc.), ohne allerdings die punktuellen Beobachtungen zu einer konsistenten Linie zusammenschließen zu können. Ein Leitbegriff ist die ›Exuberanz‹ der menschlichen Natur, aus der sowohl Schillers Kategorie des Erhabenen als auch Nietzsches Kategorie des Dionysischen abgeleitet werden. Zum anderen wird die doppelte Ästhetik als Signatur der Moderne gedeutet, wobei Zelle die ›Moderne‹ als Prozeß der Überbietung definiert (18 f.). Ihre theoretische Spitze erhält diese Zusammenschau dadurch, daß Zelle Positionen der Postmoderne in die »Gründungsphase« der Ästhetik mit ihren doppelten Pfeilern zurückprojizieren kann."

An influential text in western literary criticism, On the Sublime is a 1st or 3 rd century AD manuscript discovered in 1554, and was translated into French in 1674. It gained wide attention in literary discourse only after the Romantic period. The manuscript is attributed to an author generally referred to as Longinus, consistently debated though. One third of the manuscript is left undiscovered yet. As the work proposes well in advance many ideas that have been in vogue during Romanticism, some scholars have attributed its author with the title of first Romanticist. In this selection from the treatise (Section 7-9), Longinus defines what the Sublime in art is and elaborates on some of the five elements that he regards to be the five sources of sublimity.

A new edition of the treatise On the Sublime, with introduction, Greek text, facing Italian translation (by Laura Lulli), and extensive commentary (translated into Italian by Laura Lulli), together with an essay on the modern reception of ideas of the sublime by Massimo Fusilli. :In his article, Vrasidas Karalis explores the notion of sublime or sublimity as the field of colliding signifiers and of experiential frameworks in conflict. Instead of treating the traditional notion as a structural element of style of ideology, he analyses it from the point of its contextual validation and its very historicity: what makes sublimity emerge is the extra-lingual unease, the existential dysphoria of the world outside the text, as refracted through specific works of art. Such dysphoria is expressed through ungrammatical language or/and through the attempt in specific moments in history to reclaim a "totalising vision of experience." Through examples from various cultures Karalis addresses the difference of sublime perceptions that we see around the world. Ultimately, Karalis returns to Pseudo-Longinus's Peri Hypsous in order to explore sublimity as an expression of cultural and existential othering as an attempt to foreground the innovative differentiation in experience

Fronton évoque le sublime à propos de l’éloquence impériale principalement, car à ses yeux l’instrument de pouvoir par excellence est l’éloquence ; l’empereur, incarnant le pouvoir suprême, doit être doté d’une parole qui le place au-dessus des autres. Ce sublime impérial est présent aussi bien dans le genre délibératif que dans le genre judiciaire ou dans
le genre épidictique. De ces sommets à atteindre Fronton donne une idée grâce à l’utilisation d’images d’élévation, des images solaires, mythologiques, vestimentaires, numismatiques…
L’éloquence impériale est comme la foudre, ou a le charme du chant d’Orphée, selon les auditoires ou les circonstances, elle ravit ou en impose : elle est un outil de pouvoir. Si la technique oratoire est importante – et le maître est là pour le rappeler à l’élève –, elle ne serait rien sans l’excellence morale du prince. En cela, comme chez Longin la grandeur
d’âme est essentielle. On trouve aussi, en commun, l’intérêt pour les images comme moyen de “produire la majesté, la grandeur d’expression et la véhémence” (Du sublime, 15.1 : Ὄγκου
καὶ μεγαληγορίας καὶ  γῶνος [...] καὶ αἱ φαντασίαι παρασκευαστικώταται).
Mais on chercherait en vain, chez Fronton, le goût du risque que Longin, comme aussiPline le Jeune, apprécient.

Ενας άνθρωπος των γραμμάτων στην Ευρώπη του 19ου αιώνα (Αθήνα: Αντίποδες 2019), η Αγγέλα Γιώτη εξετάζει το έργο του Ανδρέα Κάλβου με ορίζοντα τις νεότερες τύχες του Περί ύψους του Λογγίνου, έλληνα συγγραφέα με ιουδαϊκές και ρωμαϊκές αναφορές που έζησε πιθανότατα τον 1 ο αιώνα μ. Χ., και γενικότερα τις ρητορικές, ποιητικές και αισθητικές μεταλλάξεις της έννοιας του ύψους πριν και κατά την εποχή του ποιητή των Ωδών. Πρόκειται για επανασχεδιασμένη και ενημερωμένη μορφή του πρώτου τμήματος της διδακτορικής διατριβής της (Εκδοχές του υψηλού στη νεοελληνική ποίηση. Ο Κάλβος και η πρόσληψή του, Θεσσαλονίκη 2009) και αποτελεί σημαντική συμβολή στις καλβικές σπουδές.
