중, 풍수가, 무당들이 주모한 1688년의 반란의 심문 기록『국역 역적여환등추안』. 역모의 주인공이라 할 수 있는 중 여환, 여주인공이라 할 수 있는 여환의 처인 무당 원향, 실질적인 조직을 구성하고 관리했던 풍수가인 황회 등 역적여환등추안에 대해 상세히 살펴보는 책으로, 점증하고 있는 여환의 옥사에 대한 정치사회적인 논의들을 정돈하고, 민중종교결사에 대한 종교사적인 탐색을 새롭게 시도하고 있다.

보수개신교는 차별금지법을 반대하는가? 이는 너무나 명확해 보이는 사실인데다가 그간의 입법과정에서 이들의 힘은 증명된 것으로 보인다. 보수개신교가 차별금지법을 왜 반대하는지에 대해서도 많은 연구자 들이 이미 다양한 설명들을 제시한 바 있다. 그렇다면 지금 우리에게 더 나은 설명(틀)이 왜 필요한가? 나는 이 글에서 이른바 “혐오선동세력”으로 통칭되는 보수개신교에 대한 보다 분석적이고 내재적인 이해를 통해 어떻게 차별금지법 제정과 평등의 연대를 보다 잘 구축할 수 있을지를 함께 고민해 보고 싶다. 이른바 ‘혐오선동세력’은 보수개신교 일반과 구분될 수 있을까? 종교 또는 개신교 고유의 선함을 믿고 그 진정성과 행위를 선의로 해석하는 많은 사람들은 혐오선동세력이 진정한 기독교, 참된 신앙인이 아니며 개신교 일반신자 대중을 ‘선동’하고 ‘이용’한다고 생각한다. 이러한 생각은 시민사회나 공적 정치의 영역에서 무고한 사람들을 정 죄하지 않음으로써 ‘더하기의 정치’에 괜찮은 전략이다. 실제로 어느 사회집단에나 권력자나 선동가는 존재하기 마련이고 ‘순수하고 순진한’ 보통사람도 많이 있는 것이 사실이다. 반면에 어떤 사람들은 모든 보수개신교인들이 혐오의 적극적 가담자라고 상상하는 듯하다. 그도 그럴 것이, 보통의 평범해 보이는 신자들이 우익 집회에 나오고 차별금지법이나 인권조례에 반대민원을 넣는 바로 그 사람들이기 때문이다. 각각의 정반대 사례들은 우리 주변에서 무수히 찾을 수 있고, 이 극단적으로 대립되는 경험을 현재로선 통계적으로 또는 빅데이터 기법으로 알아내어 우위와 경향성을 양적으로 확증할 수 있을 것 같지는 않다. 따라서 나는 여기에서 공공영역에서 영향력을 가진 것으로 표상되는 집단들과 상대적으로 안정적인 보수개신교의 담론(종교문화와 지식체계)의 관련성을 찾아냄으로써 차별금지법 반대운동과 혐 오구조의 문화정치학을 구성하고자 한다. 보다 구체적으로 나는 혐오선동세력과 개신교 신자대중 등을 분석적으로 구분하면서도 (차별금지법 제정에 걸림돌이 되는/차별금지법 반대의 토대 정동이 되는) 혐오 문화의 강화가 양자 간의 문화적/담론적 기제에 의한 것임을 보여주고자 한다. 이것은 기존의 선동-동원 체제 모델뿐만 아니라, 이하에서 언급하겠지만 선동세력(종교와 정치)의 이해관계 모델의 한계를 극복하려는 것이기도 하다.

This paper discusses the new system of lay Buddhist education revolutionizing the Chogye Order of Korean Buddhism in the twenty-first century. Already involving over a half a million Buddhist laypeople and five hundred monasteries throughout the country, this system is now the hallmark of the Chogye Order's propagation agenda, and it has transformed lay Buddhist activities in contemporary Korea. It is grounded upon a novel lay registration network which requires attending a basic Buddhism course at a designated temple in order to receive an official Lay ID. It now involves a lay ranking structure based on educational achievements, and culminates in the yearly Lay Propagator Exam. Besides delineating the historical construction of this system, this paper will investigate lay attitudes and motivations for joining the programs, analyze official textbook agendas, and provide ethnographic snippets from classroom rituals, in an overall attempt to paint a picture of the new Korean Buddhist lay orthodoxy the Chogye Order is currently in the process of creating.

A buddhizmust államvallásként gyakorló országok vallástörténetét fémjelezheti egy olyan szóösszetétel, melyben a többségi lakosságra utaló népnevet összekapcsolják a "buddhizmus" szóval, létrehozva olyan kifejezéseket, mint "mongol buddhizmus", "japán buddhizmus", stb. vagy-mint e tanulmány témája "koreai buddhizmus". A belső-ázsiai birodalmakhoz (a teljesség igénye nélkül: ujgur, tangut, kitaj, mongol, stb. birodalom) hasonlóan Koreában is a buddhizmus volt az egyik fontos tényező az államiság kialakulásához, fejlődéséhez és sikeres fennmaradásához. A legtöbb e témában készült tanulmány közismert, szinte sztereotip jellemzőkkel értekezik a koreai buddhizmusról. Ezek közé tartozik a sokat idézett jelző: "az állam által támogatott és az álla-mot támogató vallás (és egyházi szervezet)". Ez a szimbiózis sikeresen alapozta meg, és tartotta fenn Korea államiságát a félsziget egyesítésétől (6-9. század) egészen a mongol hódítók visszavonulásáig (14. század), hogy aztán nyolc évszázadnyi-nem kizárólagos, de vezető-ideológiai uralma után, éppen a túlszervezett, és a vallástól már meglehetősen eltávolodott egyházi rendszere okozza háttérbeszorulását a következő öt évszázadra (15-19. század). Virágzó gazdasági, politikai és kulturális hatalmát felváltja a puszta fennmaradásért folytatott küzdelem. A 20. századi történeti események aztán újra tekintélyes tényezővé teszik a buddhizmust, s bár nem nyerte vissza azt a szerepet, melyet Korea történetének első ezer esztendejében (4-14. század) játszott, napjaink országarculatát jelentősen meghatározza.

2014년 5월 퀴어문화축제가 신촌 광장에서 열렸다. 동시에 같은 장소에서 반동성애시위를 하는 개신교인들도 있었다. ‘종교의 공공성’이 화두인 가운데, 우리는 공적 영역에서 기독교의 공적 역할에 대한 바람과 희망을 제시하는 “광장에 선 기독교” 대신에 “광장에 선 호모포비아”를 목격할 수 있었다. 이들은 한국사회 공적 영역에서 의견을 제출하고 논쟁거리를 만듦으로써 공공성이 무엇인지를 새롭게 규정하려고 노력한다. 이들은 종교의 이름으로 말할 때도 있었지만, 때로는 세속의 언어, 즉 국민다수의 성도덕과 유사과학적 근거에 의해 대중을 설득하려고 했다. 또 한편으로는 이와 대조적으로 퀴어축복식을 열며 기독교 신의 이름으로 지지하고 연대하는 기독교인들도 있었다. 이들 모두 각기 나름의 이유를 가지고 광장에 나오고, 또 그럼으로써 광장을 만들어 나가는 공적 영역의 주요한 행위자들이다. 그러면서도 여기에서 우리는 단순한 이분법적 정교관계론의 문제가 아니라 양자 간의 특이한 현상적 차이를 발견한다. 도식적으로 말하자면, 공론장에서 종교적 언어로 말하고 종교적 의례를 행하면서도 세속주의에 배척되거나 함몰되지 않고 오히려 신성함을 경험하게 만드는 종교, 그리고 이와는 정반대로 공론장에서 세속을 신성하게 만들고자 세속의 언어를 사용하는 종교 간의 차이를 말이다. 이외에도 2008년 촛불집회, 제주강정마을, 밀양 등지의 소위 세속적 사안들에서, 광장에서, 공론의 장에서 우리는 종교인들—그것이 소위 보수든 진보든, 물론 대개 진보적 종교 분파—이 자신들의 종교적 가치와 정체성을 부분적으로 포기하지 않으면서도 그것들을 적절하게 사용함으로써 적극적으로 대화하고 개입하는 사회적 현상을 목격했다. 이러한 현상이 나타나는 오늘날의 사회를 하버마스는 ‘후기 세속사회(post secular society)’라고 명명했고, 카사노바는 ‘종교의 공적 재등장’이라고 보았다.
  그렇다면 한국이라는 세속사회는 과연 어떤 세속사회인가? 구체적으로 우리는 어떤 세속사회를 살고 있으며 우리가 경험하는 세속과 종교의 관계는 무엇인가? 주지하다시피 대부분의 종교사회학자들은 이미 종교가 모든 면에서 힘을 잃을 것이라는 고전적인 세속화론을 폐기했다(대표적으로 피터 버거). 대신에 학자들은 ‘탈세속화’로 설명하기도 하지만 그렇다고 섣부르게 전면적이고 전지구적인 보편이론으로서의 탈세속화론을 주장할 수도 없게 되었다.
  따라서 우리들은 우리가 종교가 의미론적 잠재력을 가지고 공적으로 재등장한다는 하버마스나 카사노바 등의 판단을 따르면서1, 마치 ‘다중적 근대성’과 마찬가지로 다양한 유형의 (후기)세속사회가 존재할 수 있다고 생각한다. 따라서 우리의 가장 큰 문제의식은 이것이다: 우리는 ‘어떤’ 후기 세속사회에 살고 있는가? 개신교는 어떤 (의미에서) 공적 종교인가? 이는 사실상 세속과 종교의 관계를 전면적으로 재검토해야 하는 매우 어려운 과제이다. 이 과제를 수행하기 위한 기초적 단계로서 본 연구는 종교가 공적 영역에 영향을 미치는 국가(정부), 정치공동체, 시민사회 중에서 카사노바를 따라 시민사회에 초점을 둔다(최현종, 2013: 107).2 

그리고 하버마스의 이론에서 관건인 종교와 세속 간의 (동기부여와 타당성 주장을 통한) ‘상호학습과정’의 경험적 성공가능성과 ‘공적의식의 변화’ 및 ‘정체성의 확장’을 공론장에 (상이한 방식으로) 개입하는 개신교의 동성애 찬/반운동집단을 통한 (상이한) 공공성 주장과 결부하여 설명할 것이다. 그러므로 연구질문은 다음과 같이 보다 구체화된다: 후기 세속사회 한국 개신교(보수와 진보)의 공적 형태는 어떠한 모습인가? 한국 개신교는 공론장을 어떻게 변화시키고 있는가? 

‘후기세속사회’(Habermas)의 ‘종교의 공적 재등장’(Casanova)은 이미 우리의 현실이다. 종교적인 것과 세속적인 것의 범주들은 (세속화의 기본적 가정과 달리) 상호침투하고 혼합되며, 그럼으로써 또한 새로운 범주를 창출한다. 하버마스나 카사노바에게 있어서 종교는 “회고하고 기억해 내는 이성(anamnestic reason)”과 “이야기하기(story telling)”로서 “의미론적 잠재력”과 “동기부여하는 힘”을 가지고 있다(Habermas, 2002: 133). 그리고 종교는 (본래 유동적인) 공/사의 경계를 재구획함으로써 공적 논쟁을 불러일으키고 정치를 활성화한다. 그러므로 종교의 탈사사화는 종교에 담긴 공적/사적인 측면들이 상호적으로 작용하며 국가와 교회, 정치와 종교 사이에서 공적인 것을 재정의하고 공적 영역의 경계를 넓힐 수 있다(Casanova 1994, 66).3 또한 우스노우도 기독교가 초월적 지평의 원천으로서 공공적(communal) 차원의 사회 교섭을 증가시키고 도덕적 헌신을 통해 시민사회의 이상을 실현시키는 데 핵심적으로 기여할 수 있다는 다소 낙관적 전망을 내놓았다(Wuthnow, 2004; 2014). 그렇다고해서 공론장에서 모든 세속적 범주들이 무화되고 재주술화되는 것은 아니다. 즉 여기에서 우리는 상호배타적 범주로서의 종교와 세속 간의 대립이나 단순히 ‘정교분리’ 담론에 입각한 ‘정치종교’를 논하는 것이 아니라 ‘공공성’을 놓고 벌어지는 다양한 대립과 상호학습, 또는 “협업”(Habermas, 2003: 109)의 양상들을 살펴야 하는 것이다. 어쩌면 우리 모두가 간과한 ‘공공성’에 대한 동상이몽을 성찰해야 하는 것이다. 

우리들은 ‘공공성’ 및 ‘공’과 ‘사’라는 개념이 공론장에서 행위자들 간에 정당성 투쟁을 위한 ‘판돈(stake)’이자(P. Bourdieu) 행위자들이 공유하고 ‘전략적인 도구’로 활용(A. Swidler)하는 ‘문화코드’(J. Alexander)로서 그들의 ‘지속적인 실천(ongoing practice)’이나 ‘퍼포먼스’를 통해 정당하고 의미있는 행위의 동기로서 인정되고 학습된 – 규범적인 효과를 갖는 - ‘문화적 구성물(cultural object)’이라고 본다. 

우리의 학문적 목표는 크게 두 가지이다. 하나는 이론적 목표로서 하버마스의 ‘후기 세속사회론’에서 핵심적인 종교-세속 간의 ‘학습과정(learning process)’ 이론을 경험사례를 통해 확인(corroborate)하고 ‘비판적인 재구성’을 제안하는 것이다. 다른 하나는 종교 행위자가 담론적 실천을 통해 공론장을 의미있는 정치적·사회적 실재의 영역으로 구성해내는 대강의 과정을 분석함으로써 한국의 후기세속사회적 특징과 한국개신교의 공적 성격(공공성 형식)을 포착하는 것이다.

The temple stay program is a new and prominent Korean tourist attraction in which visitors are invited to many of the major Buddhist monasteries throughout the country to stay for a couple of days and experience the traditional monastic lifestyle. This article will contextualize the temple stay within the history of the Korean heritage industry and inquire into the ways in which the national government and the Buddhist establishment are involved in branding it. It will demonstrate the process in which various new intangible cultural contents are introduced into the monasteries via this program and consequently argue that it involves an important identity transformation of Korean temples, from mainly being spiritual centers of a specific religion to becoming inclusive displays of Korean national heritage. In addition, it will reflect upon the significance of such trends, which add a brand new social function for the Buddhist monasteries of Korea.

The Great Dhāraṇī on Immaculately Pure Light (Wugou jingguang da tuoluoni jing, T 1024) was used extensively in Korea during the middle and late periods of Silla (668-935) after its introduction in the early eighth century. Although some scholars maintain that it provides evidence of Tantric or Esoteric Buddhism or the synthesis of Pure Land and Tantrism in Silla, my research indicates instead that the dhāraṇī and ritual procedures contained in this sūtra were mainstream Mahāyāna practices more closely associated with repentance practices in medieval East Asian Buddhism. Tantric/Esoteric Buddhism should be defined as consisting of ritual procedures such as initiations or coronations, graduated systems of meditation, and procedures using dhāraṇī in the recreation of the body, speech, and mind of the Buddha. The language of the Great Dhāraṇī provides little internal evidence of such conclusively Tantric or Esoteric elements, especially because many of the procedures...

김현준의 글 「개신교 우익청년대중운동의 형성: 극우정치에서 개신교의 효 용과 문화 구조」는 오늘날 우익 대중운동의 저변 확장에 큰 몫을 하고 있는 개 신교 청년대중에 시선을 맞춘다. 그동안 개신교의 정치화에 대해서는 교세 감 소나 사회적 신뢰 감소라는 위기에 대한 대응이라는 해석이 많았지만, 이 글은 우익대중의 행동주의를 이해하려면 그 이상으로 이해를 심화해야 한다고 주 장한다. 위기의식을 대중의 ‘사회적 상상’이나 박탈감, 혐오와 같은 정서로 변형 시키고 내재화하는 과정에 주목해야 한다는 것이다. 이 글은 그 계기로 반동성 애 담론과 종북척결 담론을 꼽고 있다. 동성애와 종북을 현재의 국가적ᆞ사회 적ᆞ종교문화적 위기를 초래하는 적으로 규정하는 문화전쟁 프레임이야말로 이들을 반지성주의적 행동주의로 몰아가고 있다는 것이다.

For a long time, the world thought that the collapse of the USSR in 1991 would lead to a similar outcome in North Korea. Although the Kim regime suffered harsh economic troubles, it was able to distance itself from communism without facing an ideological crisis and losing mass support. The same core political myths are still in use today. However, after the DPRK left the ideas of socialist realism behind, it has become clearer that the ideology of the country is a political religion. Now, its propaganda is using more supernatural elements than ever before. A good example is the movie The Big-Game Hunter (Maengsu sanyangkkun) in which the Japanese are trying to desacralize Paektu Mountain, but instead experience the fury of the holy mountain in the form of thunderbolts. The movie was produced in 2011 by P'yo Kwang, one of the most successful North Korean directors. It was filmed in the same year Kim Chŏng-ŭn came to power. The aim of the paper is to show the evolution of the DPRK political myth in North Korean cinema, in which The Big-Game Hunter seems to be another step in the process of mythologization. It is crucial to understand how the propaganda works, as it is still largely the cinema that shapes the attitudes and imagination of the people of the DPRK.

This paper explores the distinctive funerary tradition of the Unification Movement, a globally active South Korean new religious movement founded in 1954. Its funerary tradition centres on the so-called Seonghwa (formerly Seunghwa) Ceremony, which was introduced in January 1984. The paper traces the doctrinal context and the origin narrative before delineating the ceremony itself in its Korean expression, including its preparatory and follow-up stages, as well as its short-lived adaptation for non-members. Notably, with more and more first-generation adherents passing away-most visibly in respect to the leadership culminating in the Seonghwa Ceremony of the founder himself in 2012-the funerary tradition has become an increasingly conspicuous property of the Unificationist lifeworld. This paper adds to a largely uncharted area in the study of East Asian new religious movements, namely the examination of their distinctive deathscapes, as spelled out in theory and practice.

By looking at the life stories of a variety of Korean shamans, told by a variety of researchers, we will be able to see not only that there is a classic story of becoming, but that Korean shamans – and their researchers – have engaged in an ongoing dialogue with that story, bending it to their changing needs as Korea has changed. We will follow Kim Dong Kyu’s idea that “a shaman’s identity is a continuous process of construction” (D. K. Kim, 2012, p. 124), and we will explore the ways that various scholars have contended with this continuous, living process.

Previously unexamined written, visual, and performative channels of communication between central government officials and local Buddhist monks call for a nuanced understanding of sociopolitical connections between the capital and the provinces of late Chosŏn Korea (1392–1910). Via a multidisciplinary approach, this article addresses the patronage of three shrines dedicated to meritorious Buddhist monk-generals and martyrs who fought during the Japanese invasions (1592–98). Male and female members of the central elite supported the construction of the shrines in order to advance their respective political ambitions. Discontented with court factionalism, the central elite wielded their support of the shrines as a shaming device against their opponents and/or corrupt officials, while Buddhist monks sought to gain social recognition and enhance their respective monastery's political caché by maintaining the shrines, and by performing Confucian commemoration rituals with royal support.

The attitudes of Joseon scholars toward Daoist discourse are often understood as hostile and, with a few exceptions, as almost exclusively negative. The example of Toegye Yi Hwang, however, shows that a negative attitude toward Daoist texts and techniques was often accompanied by a thorough knowledge on the part of the scholar attacking them. This phenomenon cannot be fully explained by the necessity of knowing the topic to be criticized in order to better refute it. Daoist discourse contained a broad range of motifs which were appropriated or close to Confucian teaching and if studied properly, Confucian scholars could use them relatively freely without the danger of accusation of heterodox tendencies. The purpose of this study is to analyze the Daoist sources available to Toegye and his treatment of them on the public and private level. This includes the texts of Laozi and Zhuangzi, inner alchemistic treatises such as the Cantong qi, the motif of the immortals, etc. The treatment of these sources in Toegye’s works indicate that while warning against Daoist studies on a public level, he possessed a very good command of them and under certain condition allowed their use in specific areas, especially numerology, medicine, and exegesis of Song dynasty Confucian works.

Much has been written about Korean shamanism, particularly focusing on the spirit-possessed shamanic rituals found in and around Seoul. In this paper, we will look at why this particular strain of Korean shamanism has become so prominent, and we will shift our focus onto other manifestations of Korean shamanism: hereditary shamans in southern Korea, the surprising survival of shamanism in Stalinist North Korea, and the extension of Korean shamanism beyond the land of Korea – and the bodies of Koreans – through the initiation of a Swiss shaman. As we examine Korean shamanism in these different contexts, we will focus on the processes of becoming and performing. What we will find is that Korean shamanism, while rooted in tradition, is expansive and adaptive, always shifting in response to the societal constraints placed upon it, the openings and opportunities it presents, and the changing needs of its practitioners.

Contemporary Buddhist monastic communities often find some of the traditional Vinaya regulations to be outdated, insufficient, difficult to follow and counterproductive to the practice and propagation of the religion in the modern world. Focusing on the Korean Chogye Order, this paper will illustrate the manner in which monastics today negotiate between their historical disciplinary codes and current social values to formulate new Vinaya-related literature. It will demonstrate how the Order's emerging legal system democratizes the monastic bureaucracy, objectifies financials and establishes a neutral punishment-based judicial system in line with the political values of secular society. In addition, it will introduce the recent creation of new Chogye Order Pure Rules, which update the Vinaya with original codification of modern consumerism, environmental ethics and technological use. Particular attention will be given to the way this new Vinaya construction represents explicit attempts to improve the reputation of the sangha in face of social critique.

Asia, Europe and the United States, this paper sheds light on the latest historical and doctrinal developments in the South Korean Unification Movement, following the passing of its founder and self-proclaimed Saviour, Mun Sŏn-myŏng, in September 2012. Recent personnel changes resulting in the uncontested leadership of Mun's wife, Han Hak-cha, as well as the two key events of 2012 and 2013-Mun's funeral and Foundation Day-will be briefly outlined. Concomitant doctrinal alterations in the interpretation of the movement's integral millenarian vision, fleshing out as 'Cheon Il Guk 2.0' and entailing a revised notion of Foundation Day and the newly launched Vision 2020 scheme, will also be discussed. Ultimately, this paper shows how the Unification Movement has rendered its executive and theological base apt to preserve its systemically constitutive millenarian agenda for a post-Mun and post-Foundation Day era.

The period from the Treaty of Kanghwa (1876) until the fall of the Korean Empire (1897-1910) is commonly characterized as a period of kaehwa-Enlightenment-in which the Chosȏn state strived to reform and modernize. This article complicates the notion of Enlightenment in the late Chosȏn context, arguging that it was a hybrid term concurrently connoting modernization and religious awakening. In particular, this article sheds light on spirit-written texts-so called 'morality books'-employed by civil and military elites to participate in Enlightenment discourse. By the mid-nineteenth century, Guandi-the apotheosized version of the warrior Guan Yu-had emerged as one of the most popular spirit-writing deities in Qing dynasty China. This article explores the Korean faith and practice of spirit-writing centered on Thearch Kwan (Ch. Guandi) at shrines in Seoul. The King Kwan Shrines (Kwanwang myo) were the sites of production and publication of morality books during a critical period on the eve of modernization of Korea. Surprisingly, these texts were published with the sanction of King Kojong (reigned 1863-1907), the reformer who founded the new country. Kojong and his confidant servants were fully aware of the spirit-written texts and published them as the "Corpus of Enlightenment." The corpus unintentionally emphasized the key term of modernization in their eschatology, urging enlightenment-conceived of as religio-ethical values-in order to resolve contemporary ills and bring about a new era of peace. This research will dissolve the sharp demarcation between premodern and modern in late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Korea by illuminating the polyphony of Enlightenment ideas, comflicting and competing between the old and new.

Confucian academies (sŏwŏn 書院) became in post-liberation North Korea subject of a complex political and intellectual debate motivated by the needs of the new regime to reevaluate the Korean past according to the ideological framework of Marxism-Leninism. Confucian academies were designated as institutions belonging to the past feudal order and as such their traditional functioning was severed and liquidated. On the other hand, they were to a certain degree recognized as cultural relics belonging to the people of the DPRK, and North Korean scholars have devoted considerable effort to describing the role of Confucian academies within traditional Korean society. The present study analyzes North Korean discursive strategies concerning Confucian academies during the 1950s and 1960s. It focuses on both popular and academic depictions of these educational, religious, and political institutions.

Hope is something that is of immediate concern to everyone, everywhere, regardless of how rich, happy and satisfactory a life they may live. This is because it is never a generic one-virtue-fits-all but must be constantly reinterpreted and regenerated within its own new contexts. That is to say, when a context changes, it necessitates new hope according to new demands. With regard to the changing hope, this book embarks on a cardinal task of scrutinizing what has developed the theology of hope in the unique context of Korea and what kind of new theology of hope we need for today and tomorrow. This question has provided the stimuli for this historical and theological study of hope. That is why Lee seeks to explore, in Korean church history, the theological backbone of Korean Pentecostalism that has invigorated the spirit of hope especially for those who suffered from desperate circumstances after the Korean War. Paying particular attention to the so-called “Threefold Blessing” (salvation, financial prosperity, and healing) of David Yonggi Cho, he argues that the Threefold Blessing has functioned as a contextual hope to Koreans as it, in the preface, is viewed as “the most urgent and eager hope.” Although Lee appears to apply general academic disciplines of historical and theological approaches, his core argument takes shape in the first five parts by engaging the reader in various perspectives such as socio-politico-economic, culturalreligious, and eco-theological perspectives while, in the last part, he attempts to discuss how the Threefold Blessing needs to be renewed/recontextualized for the new context of the present and the future in which the concept of suffering has significantly changed with the burgeoning growth of socio-economic status in Korea.

이 논문은 ‘소속없는 신앙’에 대한 복음주의 개신교의 대응 사례를 통해 ‘포스트-복음주의’라고 명명된 새로운 복음주의자들의 전략과 성격을 탐구한다. 이를 통해 한국의 ‘탈교회적’인 ‘포스트-복음주의’가 주류 복음주의에 비해 혁신적 측면이 있음을 밝힌다. 이를 위해 기성 복음주의 제도교회로부터 벗어난 신앙 모임의 성격을 하나의 예시로 제시한다.
  이 새로운 복음주의 운동 세대는 최근(2000년대)에 발생하여 여전히 진행 중인 운동이며, 기존의 승자들(주류 개신교 및 대형교회)의 성공문법을 답습하지 않는다는 점에서 규모도 작고 체계도 불분명하지만, 더 유연하고 창조적이며 혁신적이라는 점에서 ‘스타트-업’ 운동으로 볼 수 있다. 교회 밖에서 활성화되고 있는 이러한 포스트-복음주의는 기존의 전통적인 종교 교리를 그대로 받아들이기보다는 자신의 입장에서 취사선택을 하여 자기자신의 종교를 만들며, 기존 제도 교회 밖에서 사회적 문제의식이나 공공성과 대면하여 신앙의 공개적 혁신을 꾀한다. 구체적으로 이들은 제도교회의 신앙습속과 구조 비판함으로써 제도 종교의 성스러움 독점에 저항하고, 차별화된 사회적･공적 영성의 추구하며, 대안적 의례 및 의례공간을 창출함으로써 ‘교회 밖’ 복음주의자들을 재흡수하고자 한다.
  결국 교회 밖의 포스트-복음주의자들의 혁신은 ‘소속없는 신앙’(‘가나안 신자’)이나 ‘유목적 신앙’을 (1)신학적으로 정당화 해주고, (2)대안적 조직과 인적 네트워크를 제공해주며 (3)종교적 (복음주의) 정체성을 안정화시켜줌으로써 (4)종교 이탈로 가는 것을 방지하는 측면에서 관찰된다. 이는 ‘이동식 천막(Yurt)’처럼 종교적 혁신(새로운 종교성)의 리스크를 줄이고 안정감과 유대감을 높임으로써 변화된 환경 속에서 신앙적 정체성을 스스로 관리하려는 노력이다.

This paper explores the strategies and nature of the new evangelicals—the so-called “post-evangelicals”—through the case of the evangelical Protestant response to ‘believing without belonging.’ It reveals that ‘post-evangelicals’ or the ‘churchless’ are more innovative than mainstream evangelicalism. We present the nature of the faith community of the established Evangelical institutional church as an example. Post-evangelicalism, which is active outside the church, does not accept traditional religious doctrine (evangelicalism) and practice as it is, but rather creates a public innovation of faith in the face of social problems. They are resisting the monopoly on the Sacred (the Gospel) by institutional religions and mainstream evangelicals, seeking differentiated social and public spirituality from mainstream evangelicals, creating an alternative rite and ritual space, and so re-absorbing ‘out of church’ evangelicals by criticizing mainstream faith.
  In the end, the innovation of post-evangelicals (1) theologically justifies the ‘unchurched Christian’ or ‘religious nomad’, (2) provides alternative community and human networks, and (3) prevents disaffiliation by (4) stabilizing their religious (evangelical) identities. This can be understood as an effort to manage religious (evangelical) identity in a changing environment by reducing the risk of religious innovation (new religiosity) and enhancing a sense of security and solidarity, analogously to the function of ‘mobile tents (Yurts)’ of nomadic tribes.

Western missionaries arrived in Korea decades before the Japanese annexation of 1910, and they established a major presence before the advent of colonial rule. The missionaries initially clashed with the colonial state over state intervention in their religious affairs. Through a series of confrontations, the missionaries eventually gained key concessions which allowed them to expand their presence in Korea, especially in the cities of Pyongyang and Seoul. The reasons why Christian organizations flourished under Japanese colonial rule are often attributed to their nationalist reputation gained through the March First Movement, but this line of analysis tends to provide an incomplete picture. Through a careful examination of the process by which the Western missionaries became institutionalized in the colonial order through the pursuit of education, medicine, and other forms of “social work,” we may better understand the dynamics between state and religion in colonial Korea

Kyŏnghŏ Sǒngu (鏡虛惺牛1849-1912) has been recognized as the founder of modern Korean Zen/Sǒn Buddhism. With this recognition, Korean Buddhism has claimed that Hwadu (話頭) meditation or Kanhwa Sǒn (看話禪), which Kyŏnghŏ revived, is the core of the Korean Buddhist tradition. Kyŏnghŏ’s life story has also been employed as evidence that the identity of Korean Buddhism is Sǒn tradition, as opposed to doctrinal schools. In this contribution, I reexamine Kyŏnghŏ’s life and his Buddhism and propose to understand them as suggesting more fundamental dimensions of human existence. Kyŏnghŏ’s Buddhism points not only to cultural changes that occurred in modern times, but also to the existential dimensions of Buddhist practice.

일반적으로 선교는 신자가 (기독교)신의 명령을 받아 수행하는 것으로 이해된다. 그리고 기독교인에게 있어서 선교는 “하나님 나라”와 같은 대의를 이루기 위한 수단이나 때로는 목적 그 자체로 - 흔히 교회론에서 교회의 사명이나 존재의의와 같은 방식으로 - 여겨져 왔다. 하나님의 백성들의 모임인 교회는 지상명령(과 문화명령)이나 선교적 사명을 자신의 존재 이유(혹은 목적)로 믿어왔다. 그러나 어떤 대의든지 그것의 옳고 그름이나 정당성과는 별개로 그 대의를 믿고 따르는 사람들의 실제 실천이 문제가 된다. 이 대의를 올바르게, 정당하게, 제대로 실천하는 문제가 발생하지만, 나는 여기서 단지 이상과 현실의 괴리가 문제라고 말하는 것이 아니다. 추상적인 대의는 구체적이고 실제적인 인간들의 실천을 통해 비로소 대의로서 주장되고 존재하는 동시에, 이 추상적인 대의는 사람들에게 종교적인 경험의 내용과 동기라는 상징적 의미를 부여한다. 곧 이 대의를 실천하는 과정이 선교의 현재적 의미를 결정한다. 이 종교적 실천의 문제를 우리는 “선교 (행위자의) 내적 동원 메커니즘”이라고 부른다.
이 글은 이 내적 동원 메커니즘 중에서도 보다 미시적인 실천감각적 차원에서 공격적 선교 또는 개신교 신앙의 폭력성의 혐의를 포착해 보려는 간략한 시도이다. 그러나 오늘 이 자리에서 이 메커니즘 전체를 경험적으로 다룰 수는 없을 것이다. 따라서 이 글에서 인용했던 몇 가지의 사례나 담론들을 지나친 비약을 낳을 수도 있고, 또 곧바로 일관된 현상으로 일반화할 수는 없겠지만, 한국개신교의 현실을 짐작하게 하는 징후를 엿볼 수 있기를 기대한다.

Pure Land Buddhism is widely recognized as the most prevalent and popular form of Buddhist practice in East Asia. This form of Buddhism is conventionally understood as veneration of the Buddha Amitābha (Amit'abul 阿彌陀佛) and the aspiration of being reborn in Sukhāvatī or ''Extreme Bliss'' (Kŭngnak 極樂), the Buddhaland (Skt. buddhakṣetra; Kor. pulguk 佛國; kukt'o 國土) or ''Pure Land'' (chŏngt'o 淨土) formed by means of the forty-eight vows Amitābha made when he was a bodhisattva. Although the Pure Land sūtras going back to the fifth century CE list many kinds of practices describing how an aspirant may achieve this goal, the devotional practice of verbally chanting the name of the Buddha Amitābha (yŏmbul 念佛) has increasingly become the most common way of invoking the saving power of this Buddha. In medieval China, the chanting of Amitābha's name became so pervasive among the common people and ordinary monks and nuns during the Tang period (618-907), due to such proponents as Daochuo 道綽 (562-645), Shandao 善導 (613-681), and Fazhao 法照 (fl. 762-804), that to the present day it is arguably one of the most basic pillars of Chinese Buddhist practice. Furthermore, the study of Pure Land doctrines and practices found a home in the inclusive Tiantai school 天台宗 and, from at least the tenth century, were assimilated to Chan Buddhist practices by Yongming Yanshou 永明延壽 (904-975). In Japan, where the belief that the Buddhist teaching or dharma was in decline (Kor. malbŏp, J. mappō 末法) was prevalent, monks associated with the Tendai school 天台, namely Hōnen 法然 (1133-1212) and Shinran 親鸞 (1173-1262), increasingly drew inspiration from medieval Chinese promoters of chanting Amitābha's name, and during the Kamakura period (1185-1333) formed sectarian traditions focused on the single-practice of chanting Amitābha's name (J. nenbutsu 念佛). These Japanese spiritual leaders emphasized the concepts of drawing on the ''other-power'' (J. tariki, Kor. taryŏk 他力) of Amitābha's vows rather than depending on ''self-power'' (J. jiriki, Kor.
