Idol Worshipers

Idol worship is one of the prominent valid means that a person can adopt to travel the path that leads to Moksha. The validity of the worship of idols is its efficacy in helping a devotee to connect with his object of devotion i.e. Brahman.  In fact, the worship of the idol is not about worshiping stone or wood. Instead, it is about worshiping Brahman/God who has manifested in the form of a devata (deity) in that idol. Before proceeding further, let us briefly understand how Brahman is understood in Hinduism

This essay will explore the Historical, Theological, and Literary aspects of Christian liberty or abstinence pertaining to the eating food sacrificed and offered to idols. The issues is complex and commentaries are replete with varying opinions. In the passage Paul acknowledges both sides of the arguments, and presents a final knock down argument of his own. Historically, in Paul’s first letter to the Corinthian church, he address many issues of conscience. This passage indicates the new Gentile Christians were wrestling with issue of whether it was morally acceptable to participate and partake in socially accepted worship of other gods and food offered to idols.  Two factions in the Corinthian church seemed to emerge: those who had no issue with Christians engaging in either, scholars refer to them as strong, and others who had ardent objections to both, referred to as weak by both scholars and Paul. Theologically, the tension is between Old Testament covenants  and New Testament freedom. This is significant as some of the Christians in the church at Corinth (and those in Jerusalem) were no doubt former followers of Judaism; Christianity is commonly seen as Judaism fulfilled, so reconciling a follower of God “worshipping” other gods in any form would have been inexplicable. The strong were not limited by traditional moral values, they were led by their enlightened consciences. Literarily, Paul dissects the strong, Corinthian slogans/rhetoric, or arguments the way an apologist would in a debate setting: a position Paul often found himself. He took the argument premise by premise to reveal the glaring flaw in their enlightened perspective; it was not filtered through preferential love but in knowledge and reason alone. I Corinthians 8:1-13 can be viewed as an argument for the defense of love over knowledge as the supreme foundations for morality and behavior motivations.

This short research deals with information that may reveal some ambiguity about the spread of the Christian Arianism in Yemen and Najran and Hijaz in the fourth and fifth century AD. Although, the information is little about this doctrine and it’s spread in the Arabian Peninsula, no one denies that Christianity is one of the religions known in the peninsula and even taken by some as a faith, in addition to other religions: Judaism, Magusian, Mozdakia, the worship of planets, celestial bodies and idolatry, as documented in the Arabian and foreign sources and references that dealt with such kind of topics. We have relied heavily on Arabic and Islamic sources, especially history books, biographies, dictionaries, literature, geography and some modern Arabic foreign references interested in this kind of research. We ask Allah to benefit with this short research the interested, researchers, scholars and readers in Arab history in general and the history of the ancient Arabian Peninsula.

Focussing on Isa 40-48, Jer 10, Ps 135, Epistula Ieremiae and Wisdom of Solomon 12-15, the present study examines the literary development of the polemics against other gods, and the function of such polemics in their socio-historical context. Many of these polemical texts use terms and concepts commonly found in wisdom literature. In order to explore the relationship between idol polemics and wisdom as well as the effects of their convergence, the study combines redaction-critical analyses with a discourse-analytical approach.
In sum, the present study argues that through the use of sapiential elements and patterns of thought, biblical idol polemics denigrate the worshippers of other gods specifically as fools. As a result, the polemics against idols develop into polemics against foreign wisdom, using the topic of idols merely to demonstrate the intellectual inferiority of the nations.
