Histria Istros

The paper starts by adding to the corpus of Mithraic monuments the recently (re)discovered monuments, from Carsium, Nicopolis ad Istrum, Tropaeum Traiani, Tomis and Capidava. In the second part it focuses on the differences and similitudes between the cults in Novae and Istros, by analysing Mithraism’s place in their respective communities

În anul 2015 au fost postate, pe forumul unui site specializat în comercializarea de antichități on‑line din Ucraina, două fotografii care ilustrau un lot alcătuit din 20 de monede de argint emise la Istros (pl. I). Cel care le postase, cu scopul de a afla ce valoare au, preciza că nu dispune de greutățile pieselor, dar că toate au fost descoperite de el 1. La sugestia participanților la discuții, descoperitorul a adăugat și alte foto‑ grafii, cu rezoluție mai bună, ilustrând doar câte patru monede, ceea ce ne‑a permis să identificăm nu numai seriile din care fac parte acestea, ci și ștanțele cu care au fost bătute. Ulterior am constatat că desco peritorul mai făcuse încercări de a afla informații despre unele dintre piese, pe același forum, în anul 2013.

Rezumat: Coroborând informații obținute de pe diverse site-uri destinate colecționarilor din Ucraina și Rusia, respectiv de pe piețele numismatice occidentale, autorul prezintă trei loturi de monede histriene de argint timpurii (sec. V-IV a.Chr.) descoperite în nordul Mării Negre. Un lot alcătuit din 22 de stateri de argint și 1 obol din Grupa II de emisiuni a cetății Istros pare să se fi dispersat dintr-un tezaur găsit cel târziu în luna octombrie 2017 în regiunea Herson din sudul Ucrainei. Piesele au fost identificate pe un site destinat colecționarilor din Ucraina și/sau în diferite licitații ale unei firme din Elveția. În componența celui deal doilea lot intră 10 stateri de argint din Grupa II, provenind dintr-un tezaur descoperit, cel mai probabil, în partea de sud a Basarabiei, înainte de octombrie 2014. Fotografii ale acestor monede au fost postate pe site-ul Muzeului Numismatic din Odessa. După ce s-au împrăștiat, unele dintre ele au fost identificate pe diferite forumuri și în comerț. Ultimul lot cuprinde doi stateri de argint din Grupa I postați pe un forum numismatic din Rusia. Unul dintre aceștia cântărește 8,12 g și a fost bătut cu ștanțe neînregistrate până acum. Cel deal doilea este un exemplar cunoscut, fiind vândut în anul 2015 de către o casă de licitație din Germania. Fotografiile postate cu această ocazie atestă însă că și această piesă provine din nordul Mării Negre. Abstract: Corroborating information identified on few numismatic sites from Ukraine and Russia, on one hand, and on the Western numismatic markets, on the other, the author presents three batches of early silver coins of Istros (5th-4th century BC) discovered North of the Black Sea. A batch made up of 22 silver staters and 1 obol from Group II of issues of Istros appears to have been dispersed from a hoard found at the latest in October 2017 in the Kherson region, in Southern Ukraine. The coins have been identified in 2017-2018 on a numismatic site from Ukraine and / or in various sales of an auction house in Switzerland. The second batch includes 10 silver staters from Group II, part of a hoard discovered, most probably, in the Southern part of Bessarabia, before October 2014. Photos of these coins were posted on the website of the Numismatic Museum in Odessa. After they had spread, some of the coins were identified on different forums and on the numismatic market. The last batch comprises two silver staters from Group I posted on a numismatic forum in Russia. One of them weighs 8.12 g and has been struck with dies previously unregistered. The second is a published specimen that * Banca Națională a României.

The present paper focuses on the gerusia attested in Istros by three inscriptions. Our analysis covers the structure and role of the institution (with a special mention of its connection with the imperial cult), including the significance of the list of benefactors itself. We also approached the issue of its chronology and its relation to the second foundation of the city.

When approaching the topic of the implementation of the Imperial cult in Histria/Istros during the reign of Augustus, it is
important to take into account the entire socio-political context. The three pieces of information on which we will focus in the
present paper – the architecture of the Imperial temple, the privileges bestowed by Augustus on the city, and certain aspects of
the first Istrian issues under the same emperor – indicate that Istros immediately recognised the emperor as its new master, and
tried to integrate as well as possible in the new political context.

This paper examines the epigraphic habit of the North-West Pontic region. The research is carried out on the basis of the statistic analysis of the epigraphic material collected from four Greek poleis, which includes two Ionian poleis: Olbia Pontike and Istros, and two Doric poleis: Kallatis and Mesambia. The epigraphic curve demonstrated in the paper is interpreted with regard to the history as well as the political and economic development of these cities.

This book represents the author's PhD thesis published as such (in Romanian), with no further upgrades, in 2009.
The book has an introduction that describes the methodological approach and a first chapter on Moesia Inferior's historical evolution (with special attention given to aspects relevant to the imperial cult). The next two chapters focus on the imperial cult in the Greek colonies on the Black Sea shore, at an urban and regional (koinon) level, followed by a chapter dedicated to the imperial cult in Roman settlements and towns in the province. The last chapter focuses on peripheral manifestations of the imperial cult, and there are final considerations and annexes (catalogue, tables and bibliography).
