Easter Island/Rapa Nui

Many early visitors and researchers noted and commented upon petroglyphs. Except for the PhD thesis of Georgia Lee, little attention was paid to the island’s rock art to understand Rapa Nui civilization, even if more than four thousand petroglyphs and four thousand cupules were recorded. The engravings are located in every sector of the island and present a large iconography. This rock art is likely to give us information not only on the mental and spiritual functioning of those who made them, by analysing the graphic content, but also on their social functioning. The study of chronology, location, technique of carving and variation of the iconography could help us to understand the evolution of these “artistic” creations and see if it could

El presente artículo considera la historia de Rapa Nui en el siglo XVIII desde dos perspectivas distintas. Primero, examino el desarrollo de la exploración europea de los océanos que resultó en el redescubrimiento de Isla de Pascua por los habitantes del Viejo Mundo; lo hago a base del análisis de los viajes de descubrimiento que se realizaron bajo el mandode Jacob Roggeveen, James Cook (Primera Circumnavegación), Felipe González, James Cook (Segunda Circunnavegación), La Pérouse, y Charles Bishop. Sin embargo, este artículotambién se dedica a la historia de herramientas de navegación que hicieron posible la dicha exploración. A base de los diarios de las expediciones que visitaron Isla de Pascua intento demostrar que estos dos aspectos estaban mucho más entrelazados que se puede imaginar. Que yo sepa, hasta el momento este tema no fue debidamente analizado en la literatura acerca de Rapa Nui.

Abstract

In the present paper Easter Island is viewed in the eighteenth century perspective, from two angles. Firstly, I examine the history of the European oceanic exploration which led to the re-discovery of Easter Island by the inhabitants of the Old World, describing and discussing the voyages of discovery led by the following commanders: Jacob Roggeveen, James Cook (First Voyage), Felipe González, James Cook (Second Voyage), La Pérouse, and Charles Bishop. However, the paper also deals with the history of the navigational tools which made this exploration possible. Based on an analysis of the journals from the expeditions that called at Easter Island, the paper strives to show that these aspects depended on each other to a far greater degree than many people are generally aware of. To the best of my knowledge, this subject has not been sufficiently addressed in the literature on Easter Island to date.

The Annexation of Easter Island (Rapa Nui) by Chile in 1888

Although various nations could claim the right to Easter Island, it
was Chile that finally became the owner of Rapa Nui. The article narrates the history of the annexation, starting from the period of Peruvian slave raids. What follows is a report on missionaries and merchants times, the moment of the cession of sovereignty by the Rapanui in 1888, a commercial exploitation of the island and actions of the Chilean fleet. Important documents are quoted and controversial, doubtful questions are mentioned, such as inconsistencies in the Annexation Treaty.

In the year 1770, a Spanish captain named Felipe González de Haedo
visited Easter Island and claimed it for the Spanish Crown. This act, meant as a strategic measure against other European nations, did not carry with it any serious consequences, because Spain was not really interested in this remote territory. Nevertheless, several journals and reports of the voyage were produced, containing valuable knowledge of the island, its people and culture, and some of them were subsequently translated into English (1903, B. C. Corney); at that moment the island was already a Chilean colony. In the present paper I discuss two subjects: 1) the cultural encounter as presented in the original Spanish texts, 2) differences and distortions that can be found in their English translation. When examining this type of documents, we can clearly see an example of double translation and the interpretation process: primo, the European image of an unknown Pacific culture, and secundo, the rendition of this image as seen by an English speaking author. It is of a high interest if not also value to examine how distant is the last  mentioned vision of the culture of Easter Island from its original.

Kokongo, Rōviro and Hansen’s Disease: Medical Doctors on Easter Island (Rapa Nui) in the years 1786–1853

The paper analyses the accounts of medical doctors (and an anthropologist) who happened to visit Easter Island between the years 1786 and 1853. They were, above all, naval surgeons; one of them – Verdugo Binimelis – was also the first medical doctor who resided on the island. Some of them left their memories in form of travelogues, others wrote more formal reports. The topics addressed are the physical appearance and character of the indigenous people, as well as specific medical issues: diseases observed, sanitary problems, the question of leprosy, the condition of the local hospital, the epidemics of measles and a viral infection known as kokongo, etc. One of the most interesting accounts was written by Chauvet who – without having visited the island – undertook the analysis of typical Rapanui wooden figures moai kava kava from the medical perspective. The paper also comments on the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Als ein Ergebnis der Kolonialzeit wird die Weltsprache Spanisch heute nicht nur in Europa und den Amerikas, sondern auch in Asien und Ozeanien gesprochen. Dieser Band erschliesst der Linguistik die asiatisch-ozeanische Hispanophonie erstmals als sprachliches Areal. In den Blick genommen werden die drei wichtigsten Sprach- und gleichzeitig Kontaktraeume des Spanischen in Asien und Ozeanien: die Marianen, die Osterinsel und die Philippinen. Die hier gesprochenen lokalen Varietaeten des Spanischen wie auch die autochthonen Sprachen (Chamoru, Rapanui, Cebuano und Chabacano) werden linguistisch mehrdimensional - strukturell, soziohistorisch und kontakttheoretisch - untersucht. Dabei wird der Frage nachgegangen, in welcher Hinsicht die Varietaeten des Spanischen in Asien und Ozeanien ein separates sprachliches Areal darstellen und welche Bedeutung dem Sprachkontakt zukommt.

Abstract. In this paper Sergei V. Rjabchikov offers the complete interpretation of the Rapanui petroglyph of the explorer canoe and its crew on the basis of the readings of the famous rongorongo script of Easter Island.

The original was first delivered by Sergei V. Rjabchikov as the paper “The Rapanui Rock Picture about the Explorers: The Plot has been Decoded Entirely” on the scientific session of the Sergei Rjabchikov Foundation – Research Centre for Studies of Ancient Civilisations and Cultures in Krasnodar on April 5, 2022.

Resumen. Isla de Pascua, un territorio de unos 170 km 2 , poblado por unas 6 mil personas, puede equipararse a un pueblo o una aldea. Desde 1888 Rapa Nui pertenece a Chile; situada a la distancia de 3700 km de sus costas, cumple con la definición de un área periférica. Tras la primera visita europea en 1722 y otras expediciones que se produjeron a lo largo del siglo XVIII, a partir de la mitad del siglo XIX la isla sufrió cambios culturales y sociales de gran magnitud. Acabadas las razzias esclavistas, la población decimada por enfermedades contagiosas fue evangelizada por los misioneros; luego la isla fue convertida en un rancho de ovejas por comerciantes extranjeros. Mientras tanto fue anexionada a Chile. Ya en el siglo XX Rapa Nui fue escena de dos levantamientos de los indígenas, quienes tenían que esperar hasta 1966 a que se les otorgase la ciudadanía plena. En 2007 la reforma constitucional transformó Isla de Pascua en el llamado Territorio Especial, pero los problemas de la pequeña comunidad rapanui no terminaron. Hoy los pascuenses intentan luchar por un mayor grado de autodeterminación y contra la avalancha de turistas que pone en peligro el medio ambiente insular y su riqueza arqueológica.

Resumen
En el presente artículo deseo ocuparme de un episodio que tenía lugar durante la visita del Capitán James Cook en Isla de Pascua (1774) y fue descrito, entre otros, por los Forster, naturalistas de su tripulación (precisamente, eran supernumerarios). Se trata del primer encuentro entre un indígena rapanui y los exploradores, que se produjo a bordo de “Resolution”. A mi parecer, la explicación de los hechos, presentada por George Forster, constituye un ejemplo de malendentido o interpretación errónea de lo ocurrido. Que yo sepa, hasta el presente momento este error no ha sido descubierto por los expertos en el tema de la exploración temprana de Isla de Pascua.

Summary
In this present paper I would like to expound and explain an event that took place during the visit of Captain James Cook to Easter Island (1774), and was described, among others, by the Forsters – the naturalists belonging to his crew (strictly speaking, they were supernumeraries). It was the scene of the first encounter between an indigenous Rapanui and the explorers aboard the “Resolution”. To my mind, the presentation of the episode, offered by George Forster, constitutes an example of misunderstanding or misinterpretation of what really had happened. To the best of my knowledge, this mistake has not previously been discovered by researchers specializing in the early exploration of Easter Island.

En 2015, Rapa Nui fue escenario de un episodio trascendental para la historia contemporánea que condujo hacia un cambio sin precedentes. Movilizaciones indígenas por los derechos sobre los territorios y vestigios culturales ancestrales llevaron a la ocupación del Parque Nacional Rapa Nui, Patrimonio Mundial de la Humanidad. Tras un proceso de mediación, la celebración de una consulta indígena concluyó establecer un sistema de administración indígena del parque nacional, hasta entonces a cargo de las autoridades estatales.

Más allá de presentarse como prototípico museo al aire libre, el Parque Nacional Rapa Nui se revela como territorio de confrontación, de luchas de poder y discursos opuestos, insinuando el trasfondo sociopolítico existente detrás de la patrimonialización y dando origen a un proceso de descolonización del patrimonio en Rapa Nui.  Mediante un enfoque crítico de la antropología y la etnografía, la obra apuesta por cuestionar la figura de las y los investigadores en contextos postcoloniales y reivindica el valor de las epistemologías indígenas dentro del ámbito académico.

El presente trabajo pretende servir de ayuda a quienes quieran iniciarse en el estudio de las tablillas rongorongo (kohau motu mo roŋoroŋo) de Rapa Nui (Isla de Pascua), desgranando y aclarando los obstáculos existentes en su avance, pues deben enfrentarse a la heterogeneidad de investigaciones realizadas. Frente a toda la literatura generada, que no siempre es fácilmente accesible, es necesario plantearse una relación de las incógnitas a afrontar, para no incurrir en confusiones o reiterar ciertos errores. Para ello es indispensable (re)definir diferentes preguntas y conceptos, dejando claro el avance del estudio del rongorongo dentro de la cultura rapanui.

La fascinación por el Pacífico siguió y aumentó en el siglo XIX gracias a escritores como Julio Verne, Mark Twain, Robert Louis Stevenson o Pierre Loti, cuya descripción de la isla de Pascua es uno de los textos escogidos por la profesora polaca Zuzanna Jakubowska para abordar algunas de las cuestiones críticas sobre la escritura, traducción y recepción de los numeroso textos existentes sobre el Pacífico. A la gran variedad de formatos, géneros y estilos (diarios de viajes, poesías, informes, memorias, cuadernos de bitácora, etcétera), se unen los problemas de traducción y edición crítica, lo que impide conocer las ideas de los que escribieron sobre el gran océano, y en particular sobre el caso que nos ocupa: Rapa Nui. La autora ha seleccionado la obra de cuatro autores (el padre Eugène Eyraud, evangelizador de la isla, el marino chileno Luis Ignacio Gana, el cirujano Tomás Guillermo Bate y el escritor francés Julien Viaud, conocido como Pierre Loti) y, de cada uno de ellos, un fragmento significativo de uno de sus textos, comparándolos, en el caso de Eyraud y Loti, en sus diferentes versiones para demostrar los fallos en la traducción y la diferencia con los manuscritos originales. En cuanto a los fragmentos de los chilenos Gana y Bate, la autora los comenta literariamente, remarcando sus contradicciones y las diferentes imágenes que surgen de sus lecturas. En definitiva, una oportuna llamada de atención que, si bien se puede aplicar a todos los textos generados por los escritores del Pacífico, tiene especial significado referida a la isla de Pascua, ínsula tan solitaria como encubierta por las más variadas y disparatadas interpretaciones: misteriosa, legendaria, romántica, dramática, científica, extraterrestre, etcétera.

Portée sur les fonts baptismaux par une hypothèse sensationnelle qui laissait augurer la découverte d’une écriture néolithique, la mission franco-belge Métraux-Lavachery à l’île de Pâques tint toutes ses promesses, mais d’une façon inattendue qui mit en déroute ses parrains en ce qu’elle les désavoua. Alfred Métraux et Henri Lavachery accostèrent fin juillet 1934 dans un lieu lourdement chargé d’histoires, indigène, coloniale, scientifique, qui s’enchevêtraient étroitement pour conférer à l’île de Pâques le statut de paradis perdu, a fortiori pour des ethnologues avides de pureté culturelle, d’authenticité inviolée. En 1934, les deux savants eurent affaire à une société déjà très ethnologisée, un « vieil os rongé » (Métraux) qui mettait au défi l’impératif de sauvetage ethnographique à la racine de toute mission ethnographique dans ces premières décennies du XXe siècle. C’est peu de dire que les conséquences des terribles exactions perpétrées dans les années 1860, la situation coloniale de l’île de Pâques, son statut de lieu mystérieux qui aimante explorateurs et savants, affectaient puissamment la façon dont le savoir ethnographique était recueilli auprès des informateurs indigènes - tout autant que la nature même de ce savoir.
Valorisant de nombreuses archives inédites, cet ouvrage fait une large place à la restitution du déroulement pratique de la mission, insistant tout particulièrement sur la qualité de la relation ethnographique nouée avec Juan Tepano et Victoria Rapahongo. Il rappelle l’importance des recherches archéologiques et ethnologiques menées par Alfred Métraux et Henri Lavachery en les resituant dans leur contexte, la vigueur de la polémique sur la nature du rongorongo, et le statut ambigu accordé à la production contemporaine d’objets d’art pascuan.
Comptant parmi les missions ethnographiques françaises des années 1930 effectuées hors du pré colonial français, la mission Métraux-Lavachery propulsa définitivement les études rapanui sur une orbite scientifique internationale.

Cet ouvrage est le troisième volume des Carnets de Bérose, une collection éditée électroniquement par le Lahic et le département du Pilotage de la recherche et de la politique scientifique de la Direction générale des patrimoines (ministère de la Culture). Il fait partie d’une série consacrée aux missions, enquêtes et terrains des années 1930.

Resumen: Julien Viaud, conocido como Pierre Loti, visitó Isla de Pascua en condición de cadete en el año 1872. Fruto de aquel viaje fue su diario, reescrito y pulido por él mismo tras varios años. Existen traducciones española e inglesa de estos textos, cada una traducida a partir de otra versión del diario original. Por si fuera poco, el análisis revela que los textos traducidos difieren en cuanto al contenido de los documentos originales. Eso contribuye a la distorsión de la imagen de Isla de Pascua, lugar siempre excesivamente mitificado, cuya historia y cultura frecuentemente sufren malinterpretación. El objetivo del artículo es analizar los mencionados textos para evidenciar ejemplos de la dicha tergiversación de los diarios originales de Pierre Loti, para asimismo aconsejar a los futuros investigadores un cuidado especial al manejar documentos poco fidedignos.

Abstract: Pierre Loti and Easter Island. Diaries, translations, visions. Julien Viaud, A.K.A. Pierre Loti, visited Easter Island in 1872 as a naval cadet. During the voyage he kept a logbook, which he decided to rewrite and polish up after many years. There exist translations of his diary into Spanish and into English. However, each of these translations is based on a different version of the original text. Moreover, the investigation shows that the foreign language renditions differ as far as the content found in the original documents is concerned. This situation contributes to the distortion of the image of Easter Island: a place that always undergoes an excessive mythologisation, and whose history and culture
are frequently misinterpreted. The aim of the present paper is to analyse the above-mentioned texts in order to demonstrate examples of the said misrepresentation of the original diaries by Pierre Loti. The definitive aim is to encourage future researchers to be especially cautious with documents of dubious credibility.

La presente investigación analiza desde una perspectiva territorial, la gestión que realiza la Comunidad Indígena Polinésica Ma´u Henua, que es la actual administradora oficial del Parque Nacional Rapa Nui, después de que éste fuese gestionado históricamente por la Corporación Nacional Forestal (CONAF). 
Los fundamentos generales de la entrega del Parque al Pueblo Rapa Nui se respaldan a través de distintos factores históricos, tales como las reivindicaciones territoriales pendientes, movimientos sociales-siendo el del 2015 liderado por el Parlamento Rapa Nui la detonante- y los fundamentos del derecho internacional- como el instrumento OIT 169- que legitiman las demandas territoriales indígenas. 
Lo anterior, se refuerza ante el inconformismo de la comunidad indígena local, sobre la situación de “precariedad” dominante en todo el Parque, no ajustándose al crecimiento exponencial de la actividad turística, requiriéndose de manera urgente un mayor resguardo del patrimonio material arqueológico. Se suma a esto, el deseo de administrar y/o gestionar de manera autónoma los recursos generados por el Parque, producto de una desconfianza latente e histórica con el Estado, representado en CONAF. 
El problema por investigar se centra en identificar aquellos elementos, factores o variables fundamentales que permitirán mejorar y consolidar la administración efectiva en el tiempo de un territorio hoy entregado a Ma´u Henua. Para alcanzar este objetivo, se realiza un análisis comparado de distintas políticas públicas territoriales nacionales e internacionales afines al estudio de caso, y además se realiza un trabajo de campo basado en entrevistas a distintos actores relacionados a Ma´u Henua y/o interesados en el tema en cuestión. Adicionalmente, se toma en consideración la opinión pública de la comunidad indígena mediante una encuesta aleatoria con el fin de evaluar la situación actual y así proponer cursos de acción pertinentes.
La principal conclusión que se puede extraer de esta investigación es la necesidad de fortalecer la participación ciudadana local Rapa Nui en la gestión del Parque, y la necesidad de generar variados mecanismos de rendición de cuentas o accountability como pilar fundamental de la gobernanza que requiere la Comunidad Ma´u Henua, para así, administrar de manera sostenible el Parque.

Se presenta una caracterización comparativa de la dieta rapanui en el período de la Compañía Explotadora de Isla de Pascua (1893-1953 d.C.), durante el cual se crea una fuerte dependencia de la población en productos continentales antes inexistentes, así como la inmersión en la lógica mercantil de retribución monetaria por la comida. Los alimentos tradicionales polinésicos como el taro, ñame, camote se complementan con el consumo cotidiano de nuevos cultivos, además de alimentos de producción industrial y carne de cordero, la que reemplaza los mayores aportes proteicos que se tenían antes del contacto europeo en base a pequeños animales domésticos y recursos marinos.

"The book is composed of three main parts. The first one comprises a vast and multifaceted background against which travel reports are later analysed, with the discussion of the problem of the ‘other’ as a point of departure. The matter is approached from both philosophical and psychological angle and is closely interwoven with the rich topic of cultural encounters between the Old and the New World. Successive chapters are dedicated to such issues as the Eurocentrism and the European sense of superiority; the perception of the New World from the European perspective; the interaction with other cultures, with a special attention dedicated to such phenomena as imperialism, violence, but also communication and goods exchange. One of the main topics is the vision of the ‘otherness’ presented in travel narratives and reports, with the emphasis on scientific texts from the past. The question posed is whether the travel writings are not only linguistically, but also culturally translatable.
The second part contains excerpts of 20 travel narratives (logbooks, reports, memoirs) dedicated to Easter Island, translated into Polish from Dutch, German, English, Spanish and French. Original first editions and manuscripts were used for the purpose. With few and limited exceptions, up to the moment the materials have been unknown to the Polish reader.The texts came into existence as a result of four 18th century expeditions, commanded by Jacob Roggeveen (1722), Felipe González de Haedo (1770), James Cook (1774) and the Count of La Pérouse (1786), respectively. In the introduction to this section the journeys and the travellers are briefly described.
The third, fundamental part is a thorough analysis of the abovementioned narratives, conducted in the form of the confrontation between the vision of Easter Island as presented in the travel writings with the present knowledge we possess on the subject. The issues discussed range from the marine and land natural environment to the indigenous people of the Island, their spiritual, social and material culture, and the course of their encounters with the Europeans. The recurrent themes are the misinterpretations, manipulations and simplifications that can be found in the specialist and popular literature, as well as two well-known discussions, concerning the Easter Islanders’ origin and the theory of the collapse of its civilisation. Recent study results are presented, indicating that the ‘ecocide’ supposedly committed by the Easter Islandersin the past not necessarily must be true.
Apart from the statement that the ancient society of Easter Island was highly capable of a successful functioning in a demanding environment, the book closes with a conclusion that the Rapanui culture is still being popularly misunderstood and trivialized, regardless of the detailed scientific research conducted on the Island."

El presente ensayo analiza el desarrollo de la antropología –y en particular la antropología social chilena– en Rapa Nui y el lugar que ocupa la isla en la disciplina, al determinar sus características y aportes en la comunidad local. El estudio aborda tres dimensiones: 1) un análisis histórico de los paradigmas y las transformaciones teóricas en los estudios sobre Rapa Nui, 2) un abordaje de los estudios desde la institucionalización de la disciplina y 3) un análisis de las relaciones entre los investigadores y los informantes en la producción antropológica y sus repercusiones en la apropiación de los saberes por la comunidad isleña.

Magic in the Traditions and Legends of Easter Island

Due to occidental interventions, epidemic diseases and slave raids (18–19 c.) the population of Easter Island (Rapa Nui) almost went extinct, and their beliefs and
traditions are largely lost now. However, thanks to the reports of first explorers and early ethnologists, there is enough written material left for us so that we could try to reconstruct and interpret the old legends and cult to some extent (especially comparing them to their equivalents in other Polynesian cultures). The legends and myths of Easter Island that survived – although the history of their present form is not very long – present a thoroughly Polynesian mentality and are full of  symbolical and magical motifs. We know, moreover, that a certain group of ‘priests’ or ‘shamans’ played a significant role in the Rapanui society, as well as supernatural beings in which the indigenous people have believed and, in general, still do. In the present paper I will try to present a sketch of the Rapanui magical thinking.

Uno de los asuntos centrales en las relaciones entre la sociedad rapanui y el Estado chileno concierne a la propiedad de la tierra y las formas de su transmisión. Se analiza aquí la configuración histórica de la propiedad en Hanga Roa, tanto desde el punto de vista rapanui como estatal, y los mecanismos mediante los cuales esta ha sido transmitida en el seno de la comuni-dad rapanui. Hemos buscado en un corpus de 2.000 documentos oficiales de inscripción de derechos de tierras las cadenas de parentesco que unen a las personas involucradas en las transferencias de derechos. Este análisis abarca noventa años de aplicación de los instrumentos estatales y nos permite identificar las lógicas de acción rapanui en la adquisición y transmisión de la propiedad. Concluimos que la política rapanui de la tierra es una mezcla de criterios locales y estatales, donde el parentesco sigue siendo determinante en la definición de la propiedad y la transmisión de la tierra. Abstract One central issue of the relationship between Rapanui society and the Chilean state concerns the policy of land ownership and the ways in which it is transmitted. In this paper, we analyze, on the one hand, the historic configuration of land ownership in Hanga Roa, both from the Rapanui and the state's point of view. On the other hand, we analyze the mechanisms through which the land has been inherited within the Rapanui community. In a corpus of 2000 official documents relating to the inscription of land rights, we have searched kinship chains that unite persons involved in the transfers of rights. This analysis covers 90 years of the application of state instruments and allows us to identify the Rapanui logic of land acquisition and land property transmission. We conclude that the Rapanui's land ownership policy is a mixture of state and local criteria, and that kinship remains a determining factor in defining the ownership and transfer of land.

This paper uses an osteological approach and applies the study of entanglement in an attempt to understand the crematoria on Rapa Nui (Easter Island), which represent a unique tradition within the ceremonial spheres of the Polynesian area. Skeletal remains from the crematorium of ahu Hanga Hahave, which consist of both cremated - and unburned remains, have been analysed to reveal the different practices that took part in the cremation process and to identify the individuals that were deposited in such structure. Ethnohistorical records were applied to interpret the osteological evidence and to discuss the circumstances surrounding the possible use of the crematorium, as either a site for sacrificial offerings or a site for burials.  This paper aims at creating an underlying basis for the study of crematoria on Rapa Nui and provides an overview of the processes central to the disposal of the dead and the usage and significance of this structure. The results of this study showed that the ancient Rapanui through the practice of cremation, followed an internalised structure within their society to complete each cultural act that constituted the crematorium, and these were divided in the construction of the crematorium, the making of fire, and the treatment of the dead. The complexity of each cultural act presents the possibility that an organised society, with at least one designated head, may have been in charge of the practice of cremation physically and spiritually. The skeletal remains could not be applied to determine whether the crematorium of Hanga Hahave was used for sacrificial offering or for burial since the analysed remains only represented one-fifth of the entire bone collection from the crematorium. However, the findings in this study have pointed towards a burial practice rather than a sacrificial one.

Abstract
In 1870 a Chilean warship visited Easter Island (Rapa Nui); it was a training expedition for young cadets, but the aim was also to prepare a scientific report about the island, its inhabitants and environment. This important report by Ignacio Luis Gana, underestimated by Easter Island experts, is rich in detail; it contains a wide range of information about hydrology, climate, fauna and flora, local history and current social situation of the island. It is also inspiring from an anthropological and political point of view. Firstly, the author’s frame of mind presents an obsolete worldview characteristic of early discoverers, yet combined with a certain, rather modern clear-headedness. Secondly, the document evidences an obvious interest on the part of Chile in Easter Island as a territory with promising potential, although the Chilean authorities claimed the opposite and annexed Rapa Nui only after a long debate, in 1888. The document is accompanied by a short report by the ship’s surgeon Guillermo Bate, on the physiological and medical aspects of the local community’s life, containing controversial commentaries about their alleged anthropophagous habits.

Resumen
En 1870 un navío chileno visitó Isla de Pascua (Rapa Nui); fue un viaje de instrucción para cadetes jóvenes, pero su objetivo era también preparar un informe científico acerca de la isla, sus habitantes y medio ambiente. Ese documento importante, escrito por Ignacio Luis Gana, subestimado por estudiosos de la problemática rapanui, es muy detallado; contiene un amplio abanico de datos acerca de la hidrología, clima, fauna y flora, historia local, así como situación social actual de la isla. También vale la pena analizarlo desde la perspectiva antropológica y política. En primer lugar la mentalidad del autor expresa una ideología anticuada, típica para los primeros descubridores europeos del Nuevo Mundo, pero con ciertos elementos modernos y juicios lúcidos. Segundo, del documento se desprende el obvio interés de Chile por Isla de Pascua como territorio dotado de un potencial prometedor, aunque las autoridades chilenas lo negaban en aquel momento y anexionaron la isla tan solo tras un largo debate, no antes del 1888. El documento está acompañado por un corto informe del cirujano primero Guillermo Bate, acerca de aspectos fisiológicos y médicos de la vida de la comunidad local. Este informe contiene unos comentarios controvertidos sobre las supuestas costumbres antropófagas de los habitantes.

The recitations of the Easter Island native Ure Vaeiko that were recorded in 1886 belong to the very small corpus of traditional Rapanui literature that has been preserved. Although the value of individual texts is disputed, the chants that were published as Atua Matariri, Eaha to Ran Ariiki Kete and Apai are generally considered to be genuine examples of so-called “Old Rapanui”. Of these three, the Apai text is by far the most enigmatic, as it has been recorded and published in a way that renders it virtually incomprehensible. The accompanying attempt at translation is a confused narrative that appears to have only a fragmentary relation to the chant. This paper presents a tentative reconstruction of the original Apai text, together with a new translation. It is proposed that Apai contains an origin myth which intends to explain certain celestial phenomena regarding the sun and the planet Venus, set against the familiar Polynesian background of the eternal struggle between the brother gods Tangaroa and Tane. As such, it could provide valuable information on pre-missionary Easter Island astronomy, mythology, and literature.

The present article is dedicated to the figure of Carl Friedrich Behrens, a member of the Dutch expedition led by Jacob Roggeveen, who discovered Easter Island in 1722. Behrens, a German soldier serving on one of the ships, left a narrative describing the whole journey. The first edition was published in 1737, followed, among others, by a re-edition made by a German anthropologist Hans Plischke that was published in 1923 and one of the re-editions of the book appeared in 1923. The important thing is that this version differs from the original to a great extent and the editor did not give account of changes he had introduced into the text: besides grammar and ortography modernization, he ommited certain fragments, misinterpreted other ones and added some comments without marking them as his own. As a result, the narrative gives an impression of having been written by another author; Behrens appears as a person with a different character and attitude, weaker, less convincing and even more untrustworthy than he really was. In the article numerous examples of the distortions are presented, as a warning against making a scientific or an anthropological use of unreliable editions of source texts, as this may wield a negative influence upon our view and interpretation of the culture we are analyzing.

Una de las claves en la historia de Rapa Nui entre fines del siglo XIX y en el siglo XX es el problema de la propiedad de la tierra. Entre 1916 y 1917 se suscitó un conflicto entre el Estado chileno y la Compañía Explotadora de Isla de Pascua con el intento de esta última de inscribir las tierras ante el conservador de Bienes Raíces. La respuesta del Estado fue la liquidación de la concesión a la Compañía para trabajar en Pascua y el envío de una comisión para estudiar los derechos reales que esta última poseía sobre la Isla. La Comunidad rapanui, a través de su capacidad de negociación formó una alianza con el gobierno para restarle poder a la porfiada Compañía. Sin embargo, el resultado contribuyó a aumentar significativamente el poder estatal, sin diferencia inmediata en el ejercicio de derechos por parte de la Comunidad rapanui.

The paper is dedicated to intercultural encounters analysed on the example of a journey narrative of 1770, which describes a Spanish expedition to Easter Island. The questions studied are the following: relations between representatives of both cultures, the Rapanui character as seen by the Europeans, goods exchange, annexation of the island to the Spanish Crown and liguistic aspects of the encounter.

Rapa Nui is famous for its moai (statues) and ahu (platforms), yet research into the island's many basalt quarries, sources and workshops is limited. These geological and archaeological sites provided the raw materials for tools such as toki (adzes and picks), which facilitated the manufacture of Easter Island's iconic stonework. Other basaltic tools such as hoe (knives), ohio (axes) and mangai m¯ a'ea (stone fishhooks) served for subsistence practices. However, little is known about the sources of these artefacts, the sequence of their manufacture and their geochemical compositions. In this paper, we provide archaeological site descriptions and geochemistry of source material from the Rua Tokitoki quarry and a fine-grain basalt locality on Poike to contribute towards an understanding of prehistoric mining, social interaction and elite oversight on this isolated East Polynesian outpost.

Toutefois, on sait peu de choses sur la source de ces artéfacts, la séquence de leur fabrication et leur composition géochimique. Ce papier présente des descriptions de sites archéologiques ainsi que la géochimie desmatì erespremì eres trouvées dans lacarrì ere de Rua Tokitoki et dans une région formée de basaltè a grain fin sur le Poike, pour contribuerà la compréhension de l'extractionminì ere préhistorique, des interactions sociales età la supervision d'´ elite de cet avant-poste isolé de la Polynésie de l'est.

Recent work in linguistic anthropology highlights the role of linguistic ideologies, or cultural conceptions of language, in transforming social relations and linguistic structure and use. This article examines the links between language attitudes and uses in their institutional and interactional contexts on Rapa Nui, a Polynesian island community that is part of the Chilean nation-state. By the 1970s, a sociolinguistic hierarchy and functional compartmentalization of languages between Spanish and Rapa Nui—what I will describe as " colonial diglossia " —had become established in the community, which was rapidly becoming bilingual. Language shift toward Spanish has continued to advance since then. However, rising Rapa Nui syncretic language practice and consciousness, combined with the political successes of a local indigenous movement and changes in the local economy, are now contributing to the breakdown of colonial diglossia, generating better conditions for the maintenance of the Rapa Nui language.

El artículo [escrito en 2010, publicado en 2017] cuenta la historia de la anexión, partiendo de la época de incursiones esclavistas peruanas; a continuación se describen los tiempos de misioneros y comerciantes, el momento de la toma en posesión de la isla por los chilenos en 1888, la explotación comercial de Rapa Nui y la actuación de la Armada chilena. Se citan importantes documentos y se mencionan cuestiones controvertidas y confusas, como las inconsistencias en el acta de anexión.

Summary: Although various nations could claim the right to Easter Island, it was Chile that eventually became the owner of Rapa Nui. The article [written in 2010, published in 2017] recounts the story behind the annexation of the island from the period of Peruvian slave raids on. It also presents the times of missionaries and merchants, the ceremony of the annexation to Chile in 1888, the commercial exploitation of the island and the actions undertaken by the Chilean fleet. The paper draws on and quotes crucial historical documents and raises controversial und unclear questions such as the inconsistencies in the Annexation Treaty.
