Choosing Automated Software Testing Tools

The growing demand for delivering quality software faster "Quality at Speed" requires faster and successful execution of software testing to ensure its standard. Utilizing appropriate testing method(s) and right test automation tools/framework are two defining factors for a successful and effective software testing project. Using one testing method will not be sufficient to test software and ensure its standard, a combination of some appropriate testing techniques is often required. Likewise, is no one tool that can satisfy all automated testing needs which makes finding the right tool combination difficult. Knowing the various testing methods and tools/frameworks is the first step towards achieving a successful and efficient software testing. This article presents a comprehensive study of test automation tools and frameworks. Firstly, automated testing and their categories were explained, followed by an explanation of the various test automation frameworks. Finally, a brief explanation and comparison of some of the most commonly used automation tools was presented.

There is no enough sound and solid scientific researches expounding the benefits of using automated scripts over manual testing (Samuel R. , 2014). The ones available out there are virtuously promotional trailers made for marketing drive (Udin, 2014). This dissertation is made to fill up this gap. To this end, a comparative analysis of the test results achieved from both automated and manual testing have been piloted. Complementary research inputs such as data collected thru questionnaire, interview and group discussion have also been analyzed and synthesized to back up the outcome. Unified Functional Tester (UFT) is used to build test artifacts and execute automated scripts. The conclusion exhibits that using computerized scripts might offer considerable returns in terms of acquiring enhanced efficiency and enriched accuracy over manually testing, provided that the test is labor intensive, time taking and reoccurring.

Summary: The brochure describes some of the problems in QA Automation that occur when using UIAutomation (CodedUI, White) to automate desktop applications and methods for their solution on the example of the project developed with DevExpress library. There are also some useful examples of using PowerShell scripts in both daily tasks in CI (continuous integration) (TFS, Azure) - e.g. application deployment. Some architectural examples of developing test automation framework using application related files are also discussed. System programming could be a powerful weapon when need to solve some specific issues - LogonUser, update systime, get temp file and Processes, etc.

With the advent of WWW and outburst in technology and software development, testing the software became a major concern. Due to the importance of the testing phase in a software development lifecycle, testing has been divided into graphical user interface (GUI) based testing, logical testing, integration testing, etc.GUI Testing has become very important as it provides more sophisticated way to interact with the software. The complexity of testing GUI increased over time. The testing needs to be performed in a way that it provides effectiveness, efficiency, increased fault detection rate and good path coverage. To cover all use cases and to provide testing for all possible (success/failure) scenarios the length of the test sequence is considered important. Intent of this paper is to study some techniques used for test case generation and process for various GUI based software applications.

This paper analyses data qualitatively and quantitatively via a questionnaire survey, with an accent on current practices to have an overview on the preferences of bug tracking systems used in Mauritius. The analysis particularly focuses on the perceptions of the bug tracking systems categorized by respondents. The ever-increasing reliance on software-intensive system is driving research to discover software faults more efficiently. Despite in- tensive research, very few approaches have studied and used knowledge about fault domains to improve the testing or the feedback given to developers. The shortcoming was addressed by developing ADFD and ADFD+ strategies presented in our previous publications. In the present study, the two strategies were enhanced by integration of the automatic testing tool Daikon and the precision of identifying failure domains was determined through extensive experimental evaluation of real world Java projects contained in Qualitas Corpus. The analyses of results, cross- checked by manual testing indicated that ADFD and ADFD+ techniques are highly effective in providing assistance but are not an alternative to manual testing with the limited available resources.

There are several automated random strategies of software testing based on the presence of point, block and strip failure domains inside the whole input domain. As yet no particular, fully automated test strategy has been developed for the discovery and evaluation of the failure domains. We therefore have developed Automated Discovery of Failure Domain (ADFD), a new random test strategy that finds the failures and their domains in a given system under test. It further provides visualization of the identified pass and fail domains. In this paper we describe ADFD strategy, its implementation in York Extensible Testing Infrastructure (YETI) and illustrate its working with the help of an example. We report on experiments in which we tested error-seeded one and two-dimensional numerical programs. Our experimental results show that for each program, ADFD strategy successfully performs identification of failures, failure domains and their representation on graphical chart.

With the advent of Object Oriented programming, most of the software being built is using object oriented programming languages. The major challenge lies with testing the software and it is a known fact that testing consumes around 40% of the time in the total software development process. If more number of errors are uncovered in the unit testing phase itself then the probability of propagation of errors to other components or phases gets reduced drastically. Similarly object oriented software also needs to be tested thoroughly at unit level. Unit level testing in OO software refers to the individual classes or group of classes which need to be tested. In the current work an attempt has been made to come up with an automated testing tool for unit testing of object oriented classes developed in java. It offers a single click automation solution for unit testing of OO software by providing the flexibility for the tester to choose the methods of his choice to test.

An automated testing tool helps the testers to quantify the quality of software by testing the software automatically. To quantify the quality of software there is always a requirement of good testing tools, which satisfy the testing requirement of the project. Although there is a wide range of testing tools available in the market and they vary in approach, quality, usability and other characteristics. Selecting the appropriate testing tool for software there is a requirement of a methodology to prioritize them on the basis of some characteristics. We propose a set of metrics for measuring the characteristics of the automated testing tools for examination and selection of automated testing tools. A new extended model which is proposed provides the metrics to calculate the effectiveness of functional testing tools on the basis of operability. The industry will be benefited as they can use these metrics to evaluate functional tools and they can further make selection of tool for their software required to be tested and hence reduce the testing effort, saving time and gaining maximum monetary benefit.
