CNC Milling Machine

Glass is one of the most difficult materials to be machined due to its brittle nature and unique structure such that the fracture is often occurred during machining and the surface finish produced is often poor. CNC milling machine is possible to be used with several parameters making the machining process on the glass special compared to other machining process. However, the application of grinding process on the CNC milling machine would be an ideal solution in generating special products with good surface roughness. This paper studies how to optimize the different machining parameters in glass grinding operation on CNC machine seeking for best surface roughness. These parameters include the spindle speed, feed rate, depth of cut, lubrication mode, tool type, tool diameter and tool wear. To optimize these machining parameters in which the most significant parameters affecting the surface roughness can be identified, Taguchi optimization method is used with the orthogonal array of L 8 (2 6). However, to obtain the most optimum parameters for best surface roughness, the signal to noise (S/N) response analysis and Pareto analysis of variance (ANOVA) methods are implemented. Finally, the confirmation test is carried out to investigate the improvement of the optimization. The results showed an improvement of 8.91 % in the measured surface roughness.

CNC machines are widely used in production fields since they produce similar parts in a minimum time, at higher speed and with possibly minimum error. A control system is designed, implemented and tested to control the operation of a laboratory CNC milling machine having three axes that are moved by using a stepper motor attached to each axis. The control system includes two parts, hardware part and software part, the hardware part used a PC (works as controller) connected to the CNC machine through its parallel port by using designed interface circuit. The software part includes the algorithms needed to control the CNC.The sample needs to be machined is drawn by using one of the drawing software like AUTOCAD or 3D MAX and is saved in a well-known file format (DXF), then that file is fed to the CNC machine controller by the CNC operator, so that part will be machined by the CNC machine. The CNC controller using developed algorithms that reads the DXF file feeds to the machine, extracts (line, circle or arc) shapes from the file and generates commands to move the CNC machine axes so that these shapes can be machined.

Optimization is one of the main keys to the success of the optimization process in CNC machines in the industrial field and provides information gain optimization control to improve product quality. Some benefits that can be obtained from optimization are speed and accuracy in product design and production processes. In the production process, a test of the desired quality is carried out. The international ISO rules machine tools especially, CNC milling machines using International Standard ISO 10791-7: 2014 Test condition for machining centres-Part 7: Accuracy of finished test pieces rules have concentricity of external circle under 25 μm. This maintenance case, use the method by increasing or decreasing the gain adjustment on the CNC milling machine input panel. This work was adjusting to find gain optimization settings using two methods, namely the Ballbar and the CMM measurement, to diagnose the CNC milling machine. Ballbar measurement to analyze the results of servo mismatch and circularity without trimming load, while CMM measurement to measurement through products produced on Fanuc CNC milling machine, the result is a trend of graphic error resulting in circularity error results. The best results on "Loop Gain Parameter-System V" which have circularity results on the Ballbar and CMM of 20 μm and 13 μm, it has circularity values below 25 μm at International Standard ISO 10791-7: 2014 Test condition for machining centres-Part 7: Accuracy of finished test pieces as a rule on CNC machines in the adjustment loop gain parameter.

CNC machine is used to machine complex or simple shapes at higher speed with maximum accuracy and minimum error. In micromachining the achievable range of material removal depth is the range of 1 x 10-6 m to 10-3 m. The least count in a normal milling machine is 0.01mm which is greater than 10-3 microns. Normally micro milling is done on specific milling machine which can achieve such micron level of material removal and they involve very high cost. This report is on the experimental procedure done for micro end milling on normal milling machine. During the machining various parameters like speed, feed and depth of cut were varied and surface roughness obtained for each value is noted and an optimum combination value for above is proposed.

Nowadays, the demand for high product quality focuses extensive attention to the quality of machined surface. The (CNC) milling machine facilities provides a wide variety of parameters set-up, making the machining process on the glass excellent in manufacturing complicated special products compared with other machining processes. However, the application of grinding process on the CNC milling machine could be an ideal solution to improve the product quality, but adopting the right machining parameters is required. Taguchi optimization method was used to estimate optimum machining parameters with standard orthogonal array L 16 (4 4) to replace the conventional trial and error method as it is time-consuming. Moreover, analyses on surface roughness and cutting force are applied which are partial determinant of the quality of surface and cutting process. These analyses are conducted using signal to noise (S/N) response analysis and the analysis of variance (Pareto ANOVA) to determine which process parameters are statistically significant. In glass milling operation, several machining parameters are considered to be significant in affecting surface roughness and cutting forces. These parameters include the lubrication pressure, spindle speed, feed rate, and depth of cut as control factors. While, the lubrication direction is considered as a noise factor in the experiments. Finally, verification tests are carried out to investigate the improvement of the optimization. The results showed an improvement of 49.02% and 26.28% in the surface roughness and cutting force performance, respectively.
