Asilidae

Neodiogmites Carrera, 1949, a rare Neotropical genus of Asilidae, is revised and divided into three species groups: (1) the
melanogaster group, including N. carrerai Artigas & Papavero, N. melanogaster (Wiedemann, 1821), N. tenebrosus Carrera
and N. carolindae sp. nov.; (2) the alexanderi group, including N. atriapex (Carrera & Papavero), N. alexanderi (Carrera),
N. mixtus (Carrera), N. modestus (Carrera) reval., N. niger (Carrera) and N. papaveroi sp. nov.; and (3) the lanei
group including N. lanei (Carrera) and N. tauauna Artigas & Papavero. A key to the 12 species is included, species distributions
are summarized, and two new species are described and illustrated.

Archilestris chamelensis sp. nov. from Chamela, Jalisco, Mexico is described and illustrated. The number of species of Archilestris in Mexico is raised to two, and to six for the Americas. A tentative key to the species of North and Central America is given.

When having investigated an experimental triticale field (Nyírlugos, in the north-eastern part of Hungary) in the June of 2005, the author observed and collected Machimus annulipes (Asilidae) in great number. The rubber fly attacked and fed on the Anisoplia segetum adults damaging the triticale stand. After surveying the whole predaceous fauna it
turned out that M. annulipes predominated, amounting almost to 30% of that fauna. Estimating an extensive literature review and personal research experiences it seems that the paucity of former references and the absence of robber flies in the samples can be due to the fact that M. annulipes a species of South Europe occurs only rarely in Germany and Poland where the cited investigations were carried out. As to the lack of Hungarian experiences with M. annulipes, it can be derived that the species does not prefer intensive farming and technological conditions on which the majority of Hungarian research is focusing. Regarding the results and the references M. annulipes can be a valuable poliphagous natural enemy of many cereal pests, thus further studies on its biology, development and reproduction are needed in various parts of Hungary.

A szerző 2005. júniusában egy Nyírlugos melletti kísérleti tritikálé állomány növényvédelmi felmérése közben nagyszámú Machimus annulipes (Asilidae) rablólegyet figyelt meg és fogott be. A rablólégy a tritikálén károsító vetési szipolyokat támadta és ragadozta. A teljes természetes ellenség fauna felvételezése után kiderült, hogy a M. annulipes teszi ki annak legnagyobb részét, majdnem 30 %-át. A szakirodalmi áttekintés és a személyes kutatási tapasztalatok összevetése után megkockáztatható az a
megállapítás, hogy a szakirodalmi hivatkozások sz􀄦kössége főleg annak köszönhető – a rablólegyek kevésbé preferált volta mellett –, hogy az idézett források német- és lengyelországi területekre vonatkoztak, ahol a déleurópai
M. annulipes csak esetenként és kicsiny egyedszámban fordul elő. A hazai tapasztalatok hiánya pedig abból eredhet, hogy a faj számára az intenzív gazdálkodási és technológiai körülmények nem kedvezők, de a hazai vizsgálatok főleg ilyen viszonyokra irányulnak, illetve bizonyos domborzati viszonyok kevéssé előnyösek számára. A faj extenzív termelési körülmények között értékes polifág természetes ellenség lehet, ezért biológiájának, fejlődésének, szaporodóképességének mélyebb megismerése érdekében további megfigyelésekre és vizsgálatokra lenne szükség az
ország különböző területein.

Robber flies are one of the most diverse groups of flies with over 7,000 described species in 530 genera around the world. According to recent catalogues, in Mexico 462 species, in 94 genera and 11 subfamilies have been recorded. However, specimens housed at Mexican insect collections have not been studied yet, especially those from the tropical dry forest of the Mexican Pacific; so asilid diversity of this ecosystem is poorly known.

Resumen: Se registra por primera vez al asílido Nevadasilus blantoni (Bromley, 1951) para México. Hasta ahora sólo se conocía de Nevada, Estados Unidos, con lo que aquí se amplía sustancialmente su distribución conocida con el hallazgo de la especie en los estados mexicanos de Coahuila y Zacatecas.
