" Após muitos encontros e reencontros, com diversos gestos artísticos de naturezas e de sentidos diferentes, podemos ver que a natureza intima do gesto é muitas vezes lacônica, pois entre um ponto sensível e outro como diz Merleau-Ponty, muitas pistas interpretativas serão deixadas abertas, tanto ao convite do artista tanto pela sede interpretativa do espectador e suas respostas à pergunta que o artista lhe fez. Lacônico diz-se da pessoa que usa poucas palavras, podemos usar lo para um artista que usa suas obras como mensagens. O termo tem origem na região da Lacônia (Grécia), habitada pelos espartanos ou lacões. O motivo do nome justifica-se pela formação dos simples cidadãos de Esparta durante a Antigüidade: voltada para a guerra, sem ênfase na Retórica ou na Filosofia.

We do not undertake analyses of works because we want to copy them or because we suspect them. We investigate the methods by which another has created his work, in order to set ourselves in motion (Paul Klee, 1961)

This course provides beginning graduate students with a set of conceptual tools and methodological approaches to pick amongst in designing and carrying out anthropological research projects. Methods in anthropology are often considered a purely technical process for collecting data, and nonetheless a nearly mythical rite of initiation. Given that times have changed since the advent of anthropology, and continue to do so, the question of method is also one of how to study a dynamic world with unsettled anthropological objects, including those that students will develop in their own forays into research. If there is a set of technical methods and also a genuinely experiential basis to anthropological knowledge, our task is to create a methodology adequate to the contemporary world.

Over the course of the semester, we will reflect on a variety of traditional and innovative research methods in anthropology, and trace the debates that have accompanied them, that with an eye to how students will undertake their upcoming fieldwork. Readings cover philosophical and anthropological critiques of method and different phases of research: concept work; the conditions under which one chooses a topic; participant-observation; fieldnotes; interviewing; the path that inquiry may take; and the documentation and report of those activities, including the representation of others in and through various genres of writing. In particular, we will critically explore the genres of “ethnography” and the journal article, and new approaches to both in visual anthropology and digital ethnography. Materials include films, articles and book chapters, and three books. Students will also analyze and emulate a research article of choice.

Building on an ethnography of contemporary art worlds and intellectual life in Mexico City, this paper re-evaluates the dominant concepts that form the so-called ethnographic turn in contemporary art, including the emblematic concept of ethnography. To the ethnographic turn's largely sensorial, historical, people-oriented, cosmopolitan and postcolonial mode of attention, the paper juxtaposes another form of contemporary anthropological inquiry with alternate conceptual constellations and affective modes of research. The proposed contemporary anthropology affirms joyful pedagogies of the concept, cultivates modes of caring for assemblages, designs collaborative research mise-en-scènes that secede from national, diasporic and cosmopolitan geographies, and welcomes those risky creative acts that harbour untimely and non-organic modes of life. The stakes, the paper argues, are nothing less than the differential futures brewing in the contemporariness of contemporary anthropology and contemporary art.

This paper attempts to think with orchids about the reality of moral values. Employing the growing literature of biosemiotics, particularly the works of Eduardo Kohn and Terrence Deacon, I begin with the premise that all living beings represent the world around them. Through studying organisms in their form and ecologies, this foundation opens up the possibility of thinking with organisms, rather than simply about organisms. Human beings and evolutionary processes have cultivated orchids to satisfy the demands of particular values. Consequently, the very form of orchids bears testament to the material reality of the aesthetic, epistemological, and economic values that constitute their world. Drawing on recent anthropological fieldwork with horticulturalists in Brazil, the history of botany, and plant biology, I will compare and contrast the evolutionary trajectories of orchids, fostered by the aesthetic sensibilities of naturalists, and corn, a crop largely shaped by a history of biopolitics, in order to demonstrate that plants can actively contribute to the philosophical pursuit of moral knowledge.

Resumen: los futuros de la etnografía están relacionados con cómo nos acercamos a los límites de la práctica etnográfica y de la disciplina antropológica. Dicho acercamiento se puede lograr al plantear nuevos tipos de preguntas y objetos de estudio, con una aproximación a lo que la ciencia a menudo ha dejado sin mirar o decir. También a través de innovaciones metodológicas, por medio de conectar técnicas para investigar relaciones sociales hasta ahora separadas y de construir dispositivos para intervenir el campo. Este artículo explora esta última opción, al proponer un acercamiento a formas creativas de comprender y experimentar la práctica etnográfica. Presenta una reflexión de alternativas metodológicas a través de tres casos metodológicos: exposición, novela etnográfica e instalación performativa. Interesado en repensar los límites disciplinares, el artículo propone nuevas configuraciones etnográficas y formas de conocimiento antropológico, más allá de las académicas. Concluye que, para ello, es necesario expandir las herramientas epistemológicas y relacionales del trabajo etnográfico, además de reconsiderar cómo nuestro trabajo entra en las discusiones públicas. La aproximación al límite —la epistemología de y en el limen— es, por tanto, un ejercicio metodológico y personal.

Ethnographic Boundaries: An Anthropological Approach in Three Creative Experiments

Abstract: The futures of ethnography revolve around how we approach the boundaries of ethnographic practice and the anthropological discipline. Such an approach can be pursued by posing new kinds of questions and objects of study, with an approach to what science has often left unexamined or unsaid. It can also be made possible by means of methodological innovations, that connect techniques to investigate hitherto separate social relations and build devices to intervene in the field. This article explores the latter option by proposing an approach to creative ways of understanding and experiencing ethnographic practice. It presents a reflection of methodological alternatives through three methodological cases: exhibition, ethnographic novel, and performative installation. Interested in rethinking the boundaries of the discipline, this article offers new ethnographic configurations and forms of anthropological knowledge that go beyond academia. It concludes that, to do so, we must expand the epistemological and relational tools of ethnographic work, and reconsider how our work engages in public discussions. The boundary approach —its epistemology and its limen— is, therefore, a methodological and personal exercise.

Limites etnográficos: uma abordagem antropológica em três experiências criativas

Resumo: o futuro da etnografia está relacionado com como nos aproximamos dos limites da prática etnográfica e da disciplina antropológica. Essa abordagem pode se dar ao se proporem novos tipos de perguntas e objetos de estudos, com uma abordagem para a qual a ciência muitas vezes vem deixando de olhar ou dizer. Também por meio das inovações metodológicas, por meio de conectar técnicas para pesquisar relações sociais até agora separadas e de construir dispositivos para intervir no campo. Este artigo explora esta última opção, ao propor uma abordagem de formas criativas de compreender e experimentar a prática etnográfica. Apresenta uma reflexão de alternativas metodológicas mediante três casos metodológicos: exposição, romance etnográfico e instalação performativa. Interessado em repensar os limites disciplinares, este artigo apresenta novas configurações etnográficas e formas de conhecimento antropológico, mais além das acadêmicas. Conclui-se que, para isso, é necessário expandir as ferramentas epistemológicas e relacionais do trabalho etnográfica, além de reconsiderar como nosso trabalho entra nas discussões públicas. A abordagem do limite — a epistemologia de e no limiar — é, portanto, um exercício metodológico e pessoal.

El presente escrito, de algún modo legendario, ha sido reproducido múltiples veces y ha circulado en la web como una suerte de Manifiesto Blogger. El Artículo se escribió y se reescribió (y seguramente seguirá escribiéndose) tal como queda definido en su programa original: ‘Un Blog como forma de experimentación, como bitácora, como crónica, como diario, croquis, crónica y registro de los disturbios en el Parque Humano’ Cuando el año 2013 –y replicando la iniciativa el 2014– ARCO (Madrid) desarrolla una primera experiencia editorial participativa online concebida como performance de Net-Art, y coordinada por Roberta Bosco* y Stefano Caldana*  quienes describen los alcances del proyecto en un escrito de circunstancias denominado ‘El arte en la edad del silicio’, [Nota 5] consideré oportuno fijar un texto oficial y publicarlo.
Producción cultural: el cultivo de lo humano.
La cultura es el mundo propio del hombre, el que él mismo ha cultivado, en oposición al mundo natural, que existiría igualmente aun sin él. La cultura se produce –culturas mitológicas, humanístico-letradas, post-literarias, post-epistolográficas y post-humanísticas–. Existe un conjunto de actividades a las que podemos denominar ‘producción cultural’; trátese de teorías científicas, desarrollos tecnológicos, bienales de arte, exposiciones universales, juegos olímpicos y otras tantas configuraciones del mundo. De modo que el horizonte que constituye el espacio de nuestra actuación plantea la necesidad de una ‘nueva estructura del cultivo’ de lo humano.
Ciencia zoológica y ciencia pneumática; entre el animal y el superhombre
Como animales hemos fracasado y como hombres somos una existencia tensada, estamos entre la naturaleza y los monstruos –prodigios–. Las ciencias naturales estudian la naturaleza, luego está la monstruología, de la que la teología es una rama. Nuestra incertidumbre de animal acrobático [Nota 10].–prodigioso– nos fuerza a pensar en la domesticación humana, la de nuestros sistemas educativos, económicos y legislativos para proyectarnos en un horizonte más amplio, uno eco-bio-político.
En Nietzsche el hombre aparece no sólo como un ser que se encuentra inacabado –sin una determinación ontológica definida– sino como una elevación maníaca semidepresiva, como un punto de inflexión entre el animal y el superhombre. ‘El hombre es una cuerda tendida entre el animal y el superhombre, una cuerda sobre un abismo [...] La grandeza del hombre está en ser un puente y no una meta: lo que en el hombre se puede amar es que es un tránsito y un ocaso’ . Esta tensión está en el centro de los problemas que plantea la biopolítica, de allí la actualidad de Nietzsche. La filosofía de Nietzsche intenta redefinir no sólo los conceptos de vida, política y poder, también los límites difusos entre ‘hombre’ y ‘animal’. La filosofía de Nietzsche se configura así a partir de la reflexión en torno al problema de la humanidad y la animalidad, es decir, se articula como un intento de ir más allá del humanismo entendido como un esfuerzo de domesticación del hombre en el que se pretende desinhibir su condición animal (fracasando en el proceso). De allí la importancia de la discusión en torno al estatuto biopolítico del hombre, debate en el que se insertan autores como Peter Sloterdijk y Giorgio Agamben.

Poslednje decenije dvadesetog veka donele su brojne zaokrete u antropološkoj praksi i teoriji koja iz nje proističe. Nove konstelacije geopolitičkih i društvenih okolnosti na globalnom nivou preoblikovale su pejzaže terena na koje su antropolozi klasične epohe tradicionalno odlazili, istražujući daleke, druge i drugačije kulture, te su, povratkom antropologije kući, odnosno pomeranjem fokusa interesovanja sa tradicionalnih na savremena društva i kulture, otvoreni novi tereni, koji mogu biti i digitalni. Označivši ih kao mesta gde se odvijaju smislene ljudske aktivnosti, sa posledicama i odgovorima na njih, kroz digitalna okruženja možemo se kretati, u njima možemo provesti vreme lutajući ili istražujući, razgovarati, upoznavati se, voleti i postojati, doživljavajući ih kao sastavni deo našeg sveta. Imajući to u vidu, u ovom radu predstaviću razvoj ideje o mestima u digitalnom okruženju kao terenima savremenih antropoloških istraživanja. Definisanjem ključnih pojmova i njihovim kontekstualizovanjem nastojaću da skiciram pejzaž i karakteristike novijeg medijskog univerzuma čiji su internet i socijalni mediji deo, i od kojih je digitalno okruženje sačinjeno, a potom ću predstaviti put (de)kolonizacije digitalnog okruženja koja se ogleda u njegovom istovremenom postajanju stvarnim antropološkim terenom, koji možemo istraživati višelokacijskom etnografijom, i naseljavanju digitalnog okruženja, tj. u njegovom označavanju socijalnim prostorom.


Последње деценије двадесетог века донеле су бројне заокрете у антрополошкој пракси и теорији која из ње проистиче. Нове констелације геополитичких и друштвених околности на глобалном нивоу преобликовале су пејзаже терена на које су антрополози класичне епохе традиционално одлазили, истражујући далеке, друге и другачије културе, те су, повратком антропологије кући, односно померањем фокуса интересовања са традиционалних на савремена друштва и културе, отворени нови терени, који могу бити и дигитални. Означивши их као места где се одвијају смислене људске активности, са последицама и одговорима на њих, кроз дигитална окружења можемо се кретати, у њима можемо провести време лутајући или истражујући, разговарати, упознавати се, волети и постојати, доживљавајући их као саставни део нашег света. Имајући то у виду, у овом раду представићу развој идеје о местима у дигиталном окружењу као теренима савремених антрополошких истраживања. Дефинисањем кључних појмова и њиховим контекстуализовањем настојаћу да скицирам пејзаж и карактеристике новијег медијског универзума чији су интернет и социјални медији део, и од којих је дигитално окружење сачињено, а потом ћу представити пут (де)колонизације дигиталног окружења која се огледа у његовом истовременом постајању стварним антрополошким тереном, који можемо истраживати вишелокацијском етнографијом, и насељавању дигиталног окружења, тј. у његовом означавању социјалним простором.

This course is designed as a collaborative workshop that will produce a polished research proposal and presentation for committee defense at the end of the semester. We will alternate weekly between writing, and rewriting and editing. Class time will be divided into two parts, beginning with discussion of the assigned texts, then feedback sessions with rotating partners.

The texts have been chosen to explain (‘how to’), demonstrate, or reflect on the week’s proposal component, and also to provide an intellectual scaffolding for inquiry into what it means to do anthropology, as a science and a vocation, that is, as way of producing knowledge that is linked to a process of ethical self-formation.

Thus, we will move together through the key stages of the design and writing process, with classes held in this combined seminar-workshop format. Activities will include presentations by the professor, collective discussion of the parameters of each section of the proposal, and peer critiques for the written sections. Each week we will read texts related to the part of the proposal in preparation, while students will also, in consultation with the professor and thesis supervisor, create an individualized list of readings. This means that each week students will have both shared and individual texts. Collaborative work will involve learning how to identify and share what is useful from individual projects with the group, as well as how to insightfully and constructively critique each other’s writing.

After an initial, intensive period of brainstorming and workshopping individual topics and research questions, we will spend two weeks on each major section of the proposal, roughly: Literature Review; Methods/ Research Design; Conceptual Tools /Theory; the refined Research Question / Outline; and finally, the Introduction. Then these sections will be compiled, revised and submitted for the final assignment. Note that the exact name and content of the sections may vary between students, in accordance with the expectations of different thesis supervisors.

Weekly, students will produce part of a section, which will be read and critiqued in class, and then have a week to elaborate, refine, and/or rewrite that same section. By the end of the semester, students will have a solid draft of their thesis project proposal, a presentation prepared for the proposal defense, and be ready to proceed after defense with submitting an application to the university’s research ethics board.

Cultural anthropology in France continues to bear the influence of a colonial-era distinction between "modern" societies with a high degree of social differentiation (and marked by rapid social change) and ostensibly socially homogeneous and change-resistant "traditional" ones. The history of key institutions (museums and research institutes) bears witness to this, as does recent scholarship centered on "the contemporary" that reworks earlier models and concepts and applies them to a world increasingly marked by transnational circulation and globalization. Anthropology at the Crossroads describes the evolution of a national tradition of scholarship, changes to its institutional status, and the models, concepts, and critical perspectives of anthropologists currently revisiting and reworking the foundations of the discipline in France.

According to anthropological studies “all the paths of the gift lead back to Mauss” (Aria 2016), echoing back the key role of gift in traditional societies studies. In this vein, this research employs an original approach to update the definitions of good, consumption and gift, analysing this triad on a field yet unexplored: the digital space. By building on the study of Kula’s gifts exchange as a formal practice of social recognition (Mauss 1950), I have sought to apply this theoretical framework onto the case of Facebook. Within this specific cyber space, I have argued, the exchange of likes functions as a circulation of cyber-gifts which is aimed, on the one hand, at forming up social alliances between users and, on the other hand, at increasing the digital social capital of each user (Bourdieu 1979; Magaudda 2015). The methodological framework I have applied is the so-called netnography, which combines classic methods of ethnographic research with the purposes of social network research (Kozinets 2010). Lastly, I have proposed an anthropology of social practices in the cyber-space, revealing a capitalism of storytelling which meets the contemporary need for community (Bauman 2001).

No presente artigo, sugerimos uma leitura da formação da antropologia em Portugal que assume que a "construção da nação" e a "construção do império" nunca estiveram muito afastadas uma da outra e tenderam sempre a mesclar-se -em certos momentos de forma muito evidente, noutros de forma mais mediada. De facto, numa perspetiva mais ampla, entendemos a antropologia em Portugal como parte do que poderíamos denominar uma "quinta tradição" -isto é, uma história disciplinar abertamente cosmopolita, que se posiciona fora das quatro tradições imperiais da antropologia dos séculos XIX e XX (alemã, francesa, britânica e americana). Neste sentido, o cosmopolitismo não hegemónico dos cientistas sociais portugueses coloca-os numa posição semelhante à dos japoneses, indianos ou brasileiros. Em particular, o lugar de Portugal na encruzilhada das rotas euro-americanas de intercâmbio intelectual e das rotas do Atlântico Sul reafirma-se recorrentemente como marca central da forma como as ciências sociais portuguesas intervêm no debate científico global. Este artigo analisa as dimensões de gênero do golpe de estado de 2016 no Brasil. Ele busca somar-se a outras tentativas de entendimento desse processo histórico, social e político e de um de seus aspectos centrais que foi o uso de discursos e práticas misóginas e o recuo que as políticas adotadas posteriormente à saída de Dilma Rousseff significaram nas conquistas e nos direitos das mulheres. A análise é desenvolvida a partir de quatro aspectos: o dispositivo da misoginia e seu uso nas campanhas pelo impeachment e nos discursos pronunciados no evento do sacrifício político de Dilma Rousseff; os efeitos do golpe sobre os direitos e políticas sociais, sobretudo aqueles dirigidos às mulheres pobres e negras; as convergências entre neoliberalismo e neofascismos no contexto político recente do país; a centralidade da perspectiva feminista na resistência contra o fascismo e o neoliberalismo e na luta pela democracia. A exclusão das mulheres dos espaços de poder, a perda de direitos conquistados, o empobrecimento da população feminina, o aumento da violência de gênero e das taxas de feminicídio, principalmente de mulheres negras, são abordados como aspectos centrais das motivações do golpe e do programa do fundamentalismo neoliberal e não como efeitos secundários dessas políticas.

This paper focuses on the migration routes of people with origins in India, as well as on the cultural imagination of this population living in Marseille, south of France. The Indian diaspora is a theme still not very developed in France, especially in the fields of anthropology and sociology when compared to other countries such as England and the United States. Migration, for its part, is a particular field of study in Marseille thanks to the image of a cosmopolitan city. However, the presence of Indians in ethnographic researches is absent. Indeed, I wonder about the different trajectories of these individuals within the construction of their sociability in the Marseille urban context. What is the migratory route of these Indians who arrived in Marseille but are still invisible to their representation in the French researches? What are the reasons why these migrants chose France instead of an English-speaking country? Based on an analysis of the city and its particular reality, on the construction of its daily life and its landscape, the ethnography is created by floating observations in Indian restaurants in the city. Through a network path known throughout the field, I build a study based on “entretiens compréhensifs” and participant observation of the daily lives of these migrants. In attempting to construct a sensitive ethnography on migration, I place the researcher as an actor in his research and the field as a response to the ethnographic method.

Has the craft of writing ossified in electronic dance music cultural studies? Perhaps the craft has never been suitably honed in a field where text takes a back seat to sonic and body arts, where the artifice of music production and the technics of DJ performance are championed, and where dance is an art form irreducible to the written word. But if researchers aren’t coached as writers—and thus as performers—then EDM culture studies will (still) reek like your footwear after sustained punishment. And while EDM culture studies remains a nascent field, debate on the methodology most suited to its domain is integral to its maturation. This impetus has given rise to the current edition of Dancecult, with its contributions confirming the complexity of a field that has multidisciplinary inputs, multiple foci and enjoys varied methodological and representational approaches. It also demonstrates that EDMC studies needs a research culture in which debates about appropriate methods transpire. In the spirit of this edition, this essay is intended to assist the growth of that endeavour. In particular, I pursue writing as a self-reflexive discipline that is not dismissive of sensory impressions. I invoke the participatory “research artist” whose work, as Tamy Spry (2001: 709) had it, is a “weave of performative autoethnographic poetry and theoretical prose”. It is recognised that the art forms of EDM demand unique representational techniques in the formulation of an artifice not divorced from the field of sensations, where methodological solutions are literally forged on the floor, in the club, at the festival, inside the vibe. Finally, I introduce an experimental approach, a sampledelic research adventure if you will, shaped in response to stale heuristics, and adopted as one strategy in my struggle to transpose the experience of psychedelic trance.
