Alpine Research

The notion of landscape provides an important theoretical and practical framework, able to highlight relevant aspects and trends characterizing the complex socio-economic, political, and cultural dynamics of our globalized era. In fact, globalization phenomena can even be observed at the level of our individual and social lives through the transformation of our landscapes, surroundings, and territories. To tackle the question “Whose Alps are these?” is foremost to highlight their ethical and political relevance by slightly modifying the query to: “To whom ought the Alps belong?” or “Who ought to be responsible for the Alps?” !e basic thesis of this article is that a conversion from is to ought has important theoretical and practical consequences for understanding the role played by landscape in the contemporary transformation of the places we inhabit. Indeed, landscape is a social construction involving individual and social freedoms and responsibilities. However, as underlined by the philosopher Hans Jonas, modernity upsets the equilibrium between these concepts and produces an irresponsible spread of freedom, which in turn has serious consequences for landscape and territorial planning and management. Such problematics require a reestablishment of humanity’s ethical and political duty to counterbalance indiscriminate freedom with responsibility. !e many cases of democratic and public participation processes currently taking place in the Alps may be interpreted as an e"ort to move in this direction.

Το κυνήγι των μαγισσών υπήρξε ένα πανίσχυρο όπλο ενάντια σε κάθε μορφή κοινωνικής ανυπακοής. Υπάρχουν κάθε άλλο παρά περίεργες συμπτώσεις μεταξύ της επανεμφάνισης των διώξεων κατά των γυναικών, του κυνηγιού των αιρετικών και της έκρηξης των μεγάλων εξεγέρσεων, τόσο των αστικών όσο και των αγροτικών, που έβαλαν φωτιά στην Ευρώπη για σχεδόν τρεις αιώνες.

Το κείμενο της Michela Zucca «Αιρετικές επαναστάτριες γένους θηλυκού: Γυναίκες των δασών και των βουνών» [L’eresia delle femmine ribelli: Donne delle foreste e delle montagne] γράφτηκε στα ιταλικά και αρχικά δημοσιεύθηκε από τις εκδόσεις Derive Approdi της Ρώμης, το 2004, στο συλλογικό έργο “Eretici dimenticati. Dal Medioevo alla modernità” [Λησμονημένοι αιρετικοί. Από τον Μεσαίωνα στη σύγχρονη εποχή] το οποίο επιμελήθηκαν οι Corrado Mornese και Gustavo Buratti.
Λίγα χρόνια μετά, τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2007, συμπεριλήφθηκε, επίσης, σε μια μπροσούρα, η οποία κυκλοφόρησε στο Βαλ ντι Σούσα του Πιεμόντε της Ιταλίας, στο πλαίσιο τριήμερης εκδήλωσης με θέμα “L’ eresia e la rivolta” [Αίρεση και εξέγερση] του κινήματος «No Tav στο Ve-naus» (Τορίνο), κίνημα που δραστηριοποιείται ενάντια στην κατασκευή υπερσιδηρόδρομου στην εκεί κοιλάδα, εξαιτίας των καταστρεπτικών συνεπειών, σε οικολογικό, κοινωνικό και οικονομικό επίπεδο, για τις κοινότητες της περιοχής. Από τον Ιούνιο του 2010, η μπροσούρα αυτή, διατίθεται τόσο σε έντυπη όσο και σε ηλεκτρονική μορφή από το κέντρο πληροφόρησης και εκδόσεων Porfido του Τορίνο.

Στην παρούσα έκδοση, η οποία είναι και η πρώτη στην ελληνική γλώσσα, η μετάφραση ακολουθεί την έκδοση του Porfido του 2010, λαμβάνοντας όμως υπόψη της και την αρχική του 2004. Οι σημειώσεις τέλους ανήκουν στην μεταφράστρια, όπως και οι σημειώσεις εντός αγκυλών σε όλη την έκδοση. Η εικονογράφηση είναι πρωτότυπη και έγινε αποκλειστικά για την ελληνική έκδοση. Οι υδατογραφίες ανήκουν στην Αθηνά Μιχοπούλου ενώ το εξώφυλλο φιλοτέχνησε η Αγγελική Ρελάκη.

Infatti, i circa 50 chilometri quadrati di superficie del territorio comunale comprendono la montagna ed inglobano buona parte del bosco del Cansiglio. La nostra montagna si caratterizza per la presenza di una dorsale che parte dal Comune di Caneva, attraversa il territorio polcenighese e il Comune di Budoia e si collega al Monte Cavallo. Inoltre, vi è una viabilità specifica, denominata Via delle Malghe, proprio ad indicare la presenza di diverse strutture attive, dedite all'allevamento caprino e bovino e alla produzione casearia, ma anche l'esistenza di edifici di proprietà comunale ristrutturati ed in uso ad associazioni. Insomma, una montagna viva, grazie al lavoro e alla passione degli uomini che la amano. Lavoro e passione ben documentati nel loro percorso storico da questo libro. Il pascolo da sempre ha costituito un elemento insostituibile del paesaggio montano e rilevante fattore di equilibrio. Le malghe, indivisibilmente legate al pascolo, hanno rappresentato, oltre che un elemento caratterizzante delle montagne del Comune di Polcenigo, una non trascurabile fonte di reddito. La vita dura del malgaro, però, e altri modelli di vita hanno allontanato quelli che potevano dare continuità a questa pratica. Ora piccole realtà resistono e attraverso l'alpeggio producono burro e formaggio realizzando nel contempo una nuova forma di economia, praticata soprattutto durante la stagione estiva. Produzioni che certamente si distinguono dall'omologazione del gusto dei nostri tempi. Quello della malga è senza dubbio un patrimonio della comunità mantenuto integro dalle generazioni passate e ben raccontato attraverso i capitoli di questo "racconto" storico. Patrimonio storico da salvaguardare, impegno condiviso anche dalla nostra Associazione, prezioso e rivelatore di pratiche ancora oggi ripetibili. This collection of essays highlights how given Alpine territories in Austria, Italy, and Switzerland are currently facing challenges imposed by migration, the barriers and limitations they are encountering, and the extent to which migration triggers policy and territorial innovations that can generate beneficial impacts for both migrants and local inhabitants. Contributors here include practitioners and social workers who have experimented with innovative reception and integration pathways, as well as researchers with diverse disciplinary backgrounds, including geographers, sociologists, political scientists, social anthropologists, economists, and legal experts. The book draws on empirical and theoretical investigations, research actions implemented within the framework of large EU projects, and exploratory case studies and storylines of welcoming reception initiatives. It will appeal to practitioners, social scientists, and policy makers interested in both understanding the determinants that affect migrant exclusion and inclusion in Alpine territories and developing reception and integration initiatives of advantage to both sides when hosting asylum seekers in mountain areas.

La mia tesi di laurea analizza la percezione e gli effetti sociali che il ritorno del lupo ha scatenato nelle valli del cuneese tramite l'unione di due approcci: da una parte quello zootecnico e dall'altra quello socio-antropologico. Da questa ricerca emerge infatti come il lupo non possa essere analizzato semplicemente come un'animale, bensì come una sorta di simbolo che scatena e amplifica lo scontro e la contrapposizione: da una parte tra differenti sensibilità e categorie socio-culturali tipiche della nostra società post-moderna, e dall'altra tra differenti territori in seno a questa (urbanità/ruralità; pianura/montagna). Questa complessità intrinseca viene oltretutto complicata dalla condivisione del medesimo territorio di vita e di lavoro tra l'uomo e l'animale, oltre che dallo “sviluppo” e dalla diffusione presso le masse urbanizzate di un certo tipo di mentalità animal-ambientalista spesso totalmente staccata dalla natura vera e propria. A questo si va ancora sommando la forte contrapposizione tra le due categorie più interessate da questo fenomeno: da un parte quella dei tecnici del Life WolfAlps o più in generale dei parchi naturali che sono volti alla conservazione e alla protezione di questo canide, e dall'altra parte quella degli allevatori che sono in aperto conflitto con questo animale a causa delle ripercussioni che il loro lavoro ha subito. In questa situazione molto particolare si trovano collocate a metà le persone che vivono in contesto alpino e che si trovano spesso a dover parteggiare per una di queste due parti. Questo contesto molto particolare mi ha permesso così di analizzare come questo animale favorisca la formazione e la ridefinizione delle comunità locali – spesso sfilacciate e frantumate a seguito dello spopolamento dovuto alla modernizzazione e allo sviluppo della pianura circostante – e come permetta anche la nascita di una nuova forma di identità locale e sovra-locale.
Al fine di analizzare questa complessità ho unito un approccio di ricerca intensivo con un approccio di ricerca estensivo. Anzitutto ho intervistato alcuni pastori e allevatori delle valli cuneesi, alcuni tecnici del Progetto LIFE WolfAlps e del Parco delle Alpi Marittime e alcuni partecipanti ad una manifestazione pro-lupo svoltasi a Cuneo; dopodiché ho realizzato un questionario che ho diffuso via web col fine di captare le percezioni più generali all'interno della nostra società. A questi due approcci è stata poi integrata anche una ricerca relativa alla documentazione pro e contro il lupo prodotta negli anni, cercando in questo modo di giungere ad un'analisi che fosse il più possibile olistica e che permettesse l'emersione di tutte le posizioni e le prospettive relativamente a questo fenomeno.

Die vorliegende erste Ausgabe der relaunchten Sinnhaft trägt den Titel Alpine Avantgarden und urbane Alpen. Im Zentrum dieses Hefts sollen jedoch nicht Aspekte des Brauchtums stehen, sondern vielmehr die Technisierung und Medialisierung der Alpen im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert und damit nicht nur der geographische, sondern auch der imaginäre Ort des Hochgebirges.
Seit dem 19. Jahrhundert wurden die Alpen wissenschaftlich und technisch erschlossen: die Vermessung und Kartographie haben ebenso wie der Bau von Eisenbahnlinien, Kraftwerken und Seilbahnen die vormals unzugängliche Berglandschaft in einen Raum transformiert, der für die gestalterischen Eingriffe des Menschen verfügbar war. Damit wurden die Alpen gleichzeitig zu einem bevorzugten Ort, um das Verhältnis von Natur und Technik bzw. Natur und Kultur neu auszuhandeln ' nicht nur im Sinne der Thematisierung von Macht und Ohnmacht menschlichen Handelns, sondern auch der Konstituierung der Alpen als Raum einer ursprünglichen Natur schlechthin. Zu nennen sind hier etwa der Diskurs der zivilisatorischen Wirkung des industriellen Fortschritts, der vom heroischen und opferreichen Kampf gegen die Naturgewalten oder das Narrativ des menschlichen Machbarkeitswahns. Die Speerspitze des technischen Fortschritts, so könnte man sagen, erzeugte in ihrem Fahrwasser jene 'Natürlichkeit', in der sich die KünstlerInnen, WissenschaftlerInnen und TouristInnen aus den Großstädten dann versenken konnten. Jedoch gelang es nur selten, die Geburt der Alpen aus der Moderne tatsächlich unsichtbar zu machen. Die Idealisierung der alpinen Natur war oft ' gewollt oder ungewollt ' mit einem medientechnischen und künstlerischen Avantgardismus verbunden ' von Weggefährten der historischen Avantgarden bis hin zu Vertretern der Popularkultur wie Luis Trenker.

Das Imaginäre der Alpen verband sich auf der anderen Seite immer wieder mit genuin urbanen Kulturen. Im Rahmen der Herausbildung nobler Kur- und alpiner Wintersportorte (Bad Ischl, Zermatt, St. Moritz) ließen sich auch Künstlergruppen wie der Blaue Reiter im Voralpenraum nieder. Darüber hinaus nahmen sich zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts LiteratInnen, PhotographInnen und FilmemacherInnen wie Luis Trenker, Ernst Lubitsch oder Leni Riefenstahl dem Alpinen an. Dabei geht eine latente bis offensichtliche Idealisierung der Natur mit einem künstlerischen 'Avantgardismus' einher. So sehr Trenker u.a. die alpine Natur mit einem katholisch-provinziellen bis nationalistisch-faschistischem Weltbild verbinden, so rekurrieren sie doch medientechnisch und mitunter auch ästhetisch auf Errungenschaften der künstlerischen Avantgarde-Bewegungen und sind in den urbanen Zentren ansässig und produktiv. Auch thematisieren selbst KünstlerInnen wie Trenker zumindest passagenweise die mit der Modernisierung und Technisierung verbundenen sozialen Konflikte, die sich im Zusammenhang mit der zunehmenden Mobilität ergaben.

Das vorliegende Heft möchte aber auch danach fragen, inwieweit es eine Kontinuität 'alpiner Avantgarden', die technisch-ästhetischen Fortschrittsgeist und weltanschaulichen Konservatismus vereinen, geben könnte. Neben den alpinen Moden und Modernen der Zwischenkriegs- und Nachkriegszeit lässt sich nämlich in den letzten Jahren eine neuerliche 'vague alpine' beobachten. Im sportlichen und touristischen Kontext ist eine noch stärkere Urbanisierung der Alpen und eine hartnäckige Alpinisierung des urbanen Raums festzustellen. Gegenstand der Auseinandersetzung ist hier u.a. der zeitgenössiche Hype von Pilgerreisen, Kletterhallen, 'alpine' Architektur- und Kleidungsstile, aber auch von Bergfilmfestivals und einer Flut von neuen Bergfilmen. Sie erfreuen sich nicht zuletzt in Milieus in Metropolen und Ländern eine zunehmende Beliebtheit, die oft weit von den Alpen entfernt sind und nicht zuletzt in jungen, technophilen Milieus ' ganz im Sinne von Stoibers prägnanter Parole von 'Laptop und Lederhose'. Gleichzeitig werden die Alpen von urbaner Eventkultur 'heimgesucht': Nicht nur das Phänomen der Snowboardkultur, sondern auch Technoparties auf italienischen Berggipfeln sind Teil davon. Das Heft interessiert sich also auch für Orte der Alpen jenseits der Alpen und möchte so dazu beitragen, die Alpen in der Kartographie der (Post-) Moderne differenzierter zu verorten.

Livestock predation by large carnivores and their retaliatory persecution by pastoralists are worldwide conservation concerns. Poor understanding of the ecological and social underpinnings of this human–wildlife conflict hampers effective conflict management programs. The endangered snow leopard Uncia
uncia is involved in conflict with people across its mountainous range in South and Central Asia, where pastoralism is the predominant land use, and is widely persecuted in retaliation. We examined human-snow leopard conflict at two sites in the Spiti region of the Indian Trans-Himalaya, where livestock outnumber wild ungulates, and the conflict is acute. We quantified the snow leopard’s dependence on livestock by assessing its diet in two sites that differed in the relative abundance of livestock and wild ungulates. We also surveyed the indigenous Buddhist community’s attitudes towards the snow leopard in these two sites. Our results show a relatively high dependence of snow leopards on livestock. A higher proportion of the snow leopard’s diet (58%) was livestock in the area with higher livestock (29.7 animals km^-
2) and lower wild ungulate abundance (2.1–3.1 bharal Pseudois nayaur km^-
2), compared with 40% of diet in the area with relatively lower livestock (13.9 km^-
2) and higher wild ungulate abundance (4.5–7.8 ibex Capra ibex km^-
2). We found that the community experiencing greater levels of livestock losses was comparatively more tolerant towards the snow leopard. This discrepancy is explained by the presence of a conservation-incentive program at the site, and by differences in economic roles of livestock between these two communities. The former is more dependent on cash crops as a source of income
while the latter is more dependent on livestock, and thereby less tolerant of the snow leopard. These data have implications for conflict management strategies. They indicate that the relative densities of livestock and wild prey may be reasonable predictors of the extent of predation by the snow leopard. However, this by itself is not an adequate measure of the intensity of conflict even in apparently similar cultural settings.

Die Kriegserklärung Italiens an Österreich-Ungarn am 23. Mai 1915 ist zugleich die Geburtsstunde der deutschen Gebirgstruppe und speziell des Alpenkorps dar. Das vorliegende Buch zeigt die Eigenheiten des riegsschauplatzes Hochgebirge und bewertet diese. Der Autor zeigt die Unterschiede des Alpenkorps im Vergleich zu anderen Einheiten des deutschen Heeres auf, beschäftigt sich mit der militärischen Lage der Mittelmächte im Frühjahr 1915 und analysiert spezielle Aspekte, welche im unmittelbaren Zusammenhang mit dem „Einsatz in Tirol“ stehen. Das Buch enthällt zahlreiche unveröffentlichte Aufnahmen.

Oswald Überegger (Direktor Kompetenzzentrum für Regionalgeschichte der Freien Universität Bozen) über dieses Buch: Die Erinnerung an den Gebirgskrieg des Ersten Weltkrieges ist bis heute von zahlreichen Mythen geprägt. Sie lancieren das geschichtsverzerrende Bild eines von heldenhaften Soldaten gekämpften „Krieges der Bergführer“. Als vielgerühmte „deutsch-österreichische Waffenbrüderschaft“ etablierte die Anwesenheit des Deutschen Alpenkorps an der Dolomitenfront eine eigene Form der Mythenbildung, die insbesondere in Tirol große Wirkmacht entfaltete. Das Buch von Immanuel Voigt analysiert in wissenschaftlicher Redlichkeit den Konstruktionscharakter dieses Mythos und kontrastiert die idealisierte Erinnerung mit der Kriegswirklichkeit, die letztlich ein anderes, teilweise gegensätzliches Bild zum Vorschein treten lässt. Das Alpenkorps war eben kein für den Gebirgskrieg ausgebildetes „Heldenkollektiv“, und auch das Verhältnis zu den Tirolern war spannungsgeladener und konfliktreicher als es die apologetische Erinnerungsliteratur nach dem Krieg stets zu vermitteln suchte. Als kritisch reflektierende, modernisierte Militärgeschichte ist Voigts Studie deshalb ein wichtiger regionalhistorischer Beitrag zum Centenaire des italienischen Kriegseintritts im Mai 1915.

The numerous ways that the development of a snow sports industry has impacted on its fragile host ecosystem within alpine regions has been well documented in many pieces of academic research. This dissertation sought to take these identified environmental concerns and ascertain what level of significance visitors to alpine regions placed upon them. A survey was created on “kwik surveys” that asked respondents to rate environmental concerns on a five point scale, ranging from completely insignificant to extremely significant. The survey also asked respondents opinion on environmental issues. As well as overall results the survey sought to differentiate between the responses according to gender, age and whether the respondents were British or American.
The results indicated that for the majority of environmental issues associated with the snow sports industry there was a tendency to view them as significant. However, there were a minority of issues that although regarded as significant by environmental professionals, were not regarded as significant by the visitors. Although the general response to the issues identified was to regard them as significant, the survey also revealed differences in opinions based upon gender, age and nationality.
Understanding how participants in alpine related tourism view the environmental issues they have helped to create is, however, only the first step. The next and perhaps more important step will be to harness these levels of awareness in order to move the use of alpine areas as a tourist destination onto a more sustainable footing.

Il presente lavoro ha come obiettivo di proporre un modello virtuoso e sostenibile di sviluppo del territorio montano, collocando in primo piano gli abitanti, attraverso un progetto di valorizzazione in corso che verrà analizzato. La realtà, oggi, sta cambiando velocemente e le Alpi stanno tornando ad essere un territorio di fondamentale importanza per la sopravvivenza e il benessere, sia delle popolazioni che abitano in pianura che degli abitanti delle valli. Ciò vale, in particolare, dal punto di vista della ricchezza delle risorse primarie, come l’acqua, e delle materie prime necessarie ai cicli produttivi, senza dimenticare la funzione culturale che hanno da sempre avuto le comunità e gli abitanti delle valli, con la loro varietà di lingue e culture. In un’ottica di promozione, proprio questi elementi devono diventare il motivo di attrattiva delle Alpi, come un unico e grande territorio “capace di far star meglio le persone”. Il percorso indicato nel progetto è quello della sostenibilità ambientale, sociale ed economica nel rispetto della tutela e della valorizzazione delle risorse che lo compongono, per permettere innanzitutto agli abitanti delle valli di poterci vivere, sotto tutti i punti di vista, sia economicamente che come qualità della vita, partendo dal potenziamento delle attività esistenti o dalla creazione di nuove, ma sempre tenendo conto della storia, delle capacità e delle competenze personali. L’obiettivo del progetto è l’aumento della capacità attrattiva dell’area dell’ alta Val Seriana in modo sostenibile, promuovendo iniziative capaci di migliorare la qualità dell’offerta e di innovare le attività e il ruolo dell’impresa agricola nel contesto sociale ed economico. Nasce così l’idea del progetto “Orobie una montagna di tesori”, un network sociale, nel quale mettere in rete le proprie capacità, dove sarà possibile formarsi,ma soprattutto dove poter individuare le motivazioni per vivere il proprio territorio in un modo nuovo, da protagonisti. Il coinvolgimento della popolazione è la base del principio di sostenibilità per poter garantire l’efficacia delle azioni e la continuazione dei progetti nel tempo. Su tutto il territorio Orobico è stata scelta l’ alta Val Seriana per via delle sue potenzialità dal punto di vista ambientale, per il profondo legame con la storia e la cultura e per la predisposizione degli abitanti a farsi coinvolgere nel progetto. L’iniziativa vuole definire le “buone prassi” per la trasformazione del territorio e la sua rivitalizzazione attraverso l’animazione territoriale, la valorizzazione dei prodotti locali e della razza ovina Bergamasca, integrando le diverse attività economiche e rafforzando la capacità di fare sistema. Nella prima parte dell’elaborato viene inquadrato il contesto territoriale della Val Seriana sotto i punti di vista ambientale, socio-economico, del commercio e del turismo, facendo seguire diverse analisi SWOT che aiutano ad avere un quadro della situazione in cui si trova la valle oggi. Nella seconda parte è stata affrontata la tematica della sostenibilità, prima in modo più generale e poi individuando gli elementi specifici che caratterizzano la sostenibilità in montagna, in particolare nell’ambito della valorizzazione dei prodotti locali e quindi degli allevamenti e delle razze tipiche. Questa trattazione è molto importante per comprendere l’impostazione del progetto “Orobie una montagna di tesori”, che viene presentato nella parte finale.
Tale progetto, in fase di realizzazione, vuole essere prima di tutto un modello proposto per lo sviluppo territoriale in modo sostenibile, nel quale viene evidenziato il coinvolgimento della popolazione fin dalle prime fasi di progettazione, attraverso la mappatura delle risorse umane e del territorio. Una delle problematiche più grandi nelle valli è quella di sentirsi appartenenti ad una comunità che non ha “niente da offrire”: per questo motivo il progetto, nella sua prima fase, vuole aiutare la popolazione ad acquisire consapevolezza della ricchezza ambientale, culturale e sociale del proprio territorio, entrando in contatto con chi svolge le attività produttive tipiche, essendo i principali gestori dell’ambiente e del paesaggio. Questo non è però sufficiente, è poi necessario acquisire le competenze per trasformare tutto ciò in attività imprenditoriale, a disposizione dei turisti, ed è a questo punto che vengono proposti due percorsi formativo-pratici. Infine è stato scelto di coinvolgere, insieme agli artigiani di prodotti locali, gli allevatori della razza ovina Bergamasca, in quanto rappresentanti di un elemento tradizionale molto importante nella cultura del territorio, che fino ad oggi non è mai stato preso in considerazione in una prospettiva di valorizzazione.

Negli ultimi 160 anni il paesaggio alpino legato allo sfruttamento stagionale delle alte quote ha subito profondi cambiamenti. Questo articolo presenta le ricerche condotte nel territorio di Brentonico (TN) che hanno documentato un periodo di stabilità intercorso tra la metà del XIX secolo e la metà del XX secolo, e una successiva tendenza alla riduzione dei pascoli in favore dell’avanzamento del bosco. Questo fenomeno può essere letto come il segno di cambiamenti sociali in atto, e di nuovi interessi economici evidentemente diversi da quelli passati.

L'homme sauvage est un motif iconographique qui rencontre un succès important dans les Alpes aux deux derniers siècles du Moyen Âge. Les peintures murales sur lesquelles il apparaît montrent un usage récurrent de ce motif comme figure de protection, ainsi qu'une relation entre ce motif et les images de saint(e)s velu(e)s comme Onuphre et Madeleine.

TOPOGRAPHICAL ENGRAVINGS AND AGRICULTURAL LANDSCAPES IN VALCAMONICA AND MT. BEGO ROCK ART

The so called topographical engravings or "maps" are constituted by regularly repeated geometric figures and are diffused in the Alps, mainly in Valcamonica, Valtellina (I), Mt. Bego and Maurienne Valley (F). The analysis of superimpositions show two main phases; the first one can be dated to the final Neolithic-first Copper Age, while the second one can be attributed to the middle Iron Age. Close similarities can be observed between Valcamonica and Mt. Bego "maps" of the Neolithic-first Copper Age; they probably represent the most ancient post-Palaeolithic engravings, marking the beginning of the entire open-air orck art cycle in the Alps. In Valcamonica and Mt. Bego they have been executed over a very suitable rock, a siliceous sandstone which represents, with few other kinds of rocks, a conditio sine qua non for the existence of the wide open air engraved areas.

The themes represented by the "maps" are completely different from those recurring during the Bronze and Iron ages, with recurrent figures of weapons and warriors. The interpretation of the topographical engravings is strictly related to the representation of an anthropised landscape, in particular of a sort of protected agricultural units, where ploughed fields and cereal sheaves seem to be the core of each representation.

Engraving maps could be interpreted as a sort of territorial marking, executed by local people to affirm their farmer identity, to perform a propitiatory rite, or make a virtual offering.

Que sait-on aujourd’hui des bergers, de leur travail et de leur quotidien? Longtemps enfermé dans une image archétypale — un métier d’homme, rude et solitaire — le métier s’ouvre à d’autres réalités. Depuis des dizaines d’années, les actions d’accompagnement, d’animation, de développement, de prévention, de formation, de communication, de recherche, etc., participent largement à transformer le métier de berger en veillant à sa pérennisation.
Une enquête technique, ethnologique et photographique, menée en 2010 sur le terrain à la rencontre de bergères et bergers des Alpes, dévoile une diversité et une évolution insoupçonnées de ce métier : trajectoires individuelles et professionnelles, conditions de vie et de travail, féminisation, image du métier, professionnalisation, créativité, etc. Elle montre aussi que ce métier, pourtant poussé par une formidable vague de modernité, offre à celles et ceux qui le pratiquent, une incomparable richesse culturelle, philosophique et poétique.

Un tempo, sulle nostre montagne certi eventi e segni naturali, in particolare quelli più grandiosi, benefici o distruttivi, erano attribuiti all’intervento di divinità ed entità ultraterrene. Fino a tempi recenti, erano soprattutto le streghe a creare le condizioni atmosferiche e terrestri più devastanti, e il loro lugubre profilo poteva essere intravisto sulle vette o fra le rocce, quando il lampeggiare dei fulmini le illuminava di una fredda e subitanea luce, o il momentaneo diradarsi della foschia le lasciava apparire, per poi nasconderle nuovamente.
Questi spiriti inquieti, ostili e spesso vendicativi si scatenavano durante tempeste e nubifragi, “sfasciando ponti, cagionando frane e slavine, seppellendo e devastando villaggi, chiese e case, rotolandovi sopra dall’alto immensi macigni” (1). Il loro intervento poteva addirittura creare avvallamenti o rialzi laddove il terreno era pianeggiante, arrivando quindi a mutare l’aspetto del paesaggio.
In Val d’Ossola, ai piedi del Monte Rosa, si diceva che a provocare maggior devastazione fossero due streghe inseparabili chiamate Streckala, o Streccala, ovvero “colei che tira” – trascinando rocce e terra per provocare le slavine – e Brennala, o Bregnala, la strega che spinge, seppur il suo nome significhi “colei che brucia”, o “l’incendiaria”.

Dopo nove anni di ricerche in quota ed in fondovalle nell'area della Val Venosta, Val Senales e valli laterali e l'area di Vent-Oetzal tra Italia ed Austria, all'interno di operazioni di survey finalizzate a verificare l'esistenza di tracce antropiche ascrivibili al periodo dell'Uomo di Similaun, è parso utile fare il punto sullo stato delle conoscenze acquisite sino ad ora e formulare delle ipotesi interpretative come possibili risposte ai molti interrogativi che tale rinvenimento ha suscitato. Queste indagini di superficie hanno avuto origine a partire dal Luglio 1992 quando l'amico fraterno prematuramente scomparso, Prof. Bernardino Bagolini, alla Cui memoria dedico queste scoperte, volle coinvolgermi, riconoscendomi autonomia di ricerca, nel programma di survey promosso dall'Ufficio Beni Archeologici della Provincia Autonoma di Bolzano e condotto dallo stesso Bagolini sul territorio della Val Senales con il Dipartimento di Scienze Filologiche e Storiche dell'Università degli Studi di Trento fino al 1994. Il giorno stesso del mio coinvolgimento, avvenuto alla fine della campagna estiva 1992, ho potuto individuare un primo sito mesolitico a Lagaun valletta laterale di Val Senales a mt.2200 riferibile ad un tipico bivacco di cacciatori mesolitici nelle loro frequentazioni stagionali di quota a caccia di stambecchi e camosci. Dopo aver raccolto informazioni relative a tradizioni locali riguardanti l'esistenza d'una antica transumanza di pastori che ogni anno a metà Giugno con le greggi dalla Val Venosta attraverso la Val Senales si recano nelle alte praterie limitrofe al ghiacciaio del Similaun, ho deciso di camminare con gli stessi pastori nei due giorni della loro transumanza di ritorno da Vent -Austria in Val Senales -Val Venosta alla metà di Settembre 1992. Questa esperienza si è dimostrata ricca di scoperte non solo relative alle costumanze dei pastori ed alle loro modalità di relazione con l'ambiente ma anche perché ho avuto modo di rinvenire tre nuovi siti mesolitici di cui due sulla bastionata del lago Corces a mt.2510 oltre il Giogo Tasca in Val di Silandro, laterale della Val Senales, e l'altro sul terrazzo a belvedere su Vent in Niedertal a mt.2025 in Austria. Sulla base delle ricerche che ho svolto fino dal 1975 con il Museo di Scienze Naturali di Trento, dapprima sulla catena montuosa Baldo-Stivo-Bondone dove con Bagolini abbiamo riconosciuto la direttrice principale della prima colonizzazione dell'area centrale alpina da parte dei cacciatori paleolitici, ed in seguito fino ad oggi, relativamente ai più antichi processi di antropizzazione, per tutto l'arco alpino, ho potuto individuare un itinerario mesolitico tra la Val Venosta, Val di Silandro, Val Senales, Val di Tisa, Niedertal e Vent (foto1). Questo percorso è ancora calcato dalle greggi nelle loro transumanze annuali al Similaun ed è marcato dai capitelli ed edicole in legno di S.Martino protettore degli animali e dei pastori, rivelando perciò un meccanismo di continuità insediativa fondato sulla relazione uomo-animale all'origine selvatico e successivamente domestico. Da tale constatazione è scaturita l'ipotesi dell'Uomo dei Ghiacci pastore e negli anni successivi alla scomparsa di Bagolini che condivideva questa idea, ho cercato di scoprire tracce che potessero dimostrare questa tesi. Poiché negli anni 1993 e 1994 altri ricercatori dell'Università di Trento e dell'Università di Innsbruck hanno confermato con vari ritrovamenti l'anzidetto percorso mesolitico in territorio italiano ed austriaco ed io stesso ho rinvenuto altri siti nell'area Val Senales-Vent , sono giunto alla conclusione che in base al principio della continuità insediativa potevo cogliere ulteriori indicatori di presenza antropica riferibile all'Uomo dei Ghiacci, considerando fenomeni e reperti diversi presenti sul territorio. Infatti osservando le strutture in pietra di tradizione pastorale (baito) e le altre dell'alpeggio (malga) con diversificazione di spazi legati alle diverse necessità dei ruoli, il pastore necessita di poco spazio per il suo ricovero-magazzino mentre il malgaro ha bisogno di maggiore superficie per la

An ecosystem services-based SWOT analysis is proposed in order to identify and quantify internal and external factors supporting or threatening the conservation effectiveness of protected areas. The proposed approach concerns both the ecological and the social perspective. Strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats were evaluated based on 12 selected environmental and socio-economic indicators for all terrestrial Italian protected areas, belonging to the Natura 2000 network, and for their 5km buffer area. The indicators, used as criteria within a multi-criteria assessment, include: core area, cost-distance between protected areas, changes in ecosystem services values, intensification of land use, and urbanization. The results were aggregated for three biogeographical regions, Alpine, Continental, and Mediterranean, indicating that Alpine sites have more opportunities and strengths than Continental and
Mediterranean sites. The results call attention to where connectivity and land-use changes may have stronger influence on protected areas, in particular, whereas urbanization or intensification of agriculture may hamper conservation goals of protected areas. The proposed SWOT analysis provides helpful information for a multiple scale perspective and for identifying conservation priorities and for defining management strategies to assure biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services provision.

Alpine ecosystems account for c. 3% of terrestrial habitats yet, along with adjacent mountain systems, provide water resources to nearly half of the world's human population. Approximately 20% of humans live in or near mountain areas, making it inherently important to understand contemporary impacts on these systems. Here, I review literature regarding contemporary and projected human impacts on alpine ecosystems, including the direct and indirect impacts of human-induced climate change on alpine plant, animal, and soil communities.

Abstract: Lo sviluppo di una regione dipende sì dalle proprie risorse interne ma, soprattutto, dalle sue capacità di essere in relazíone con l'esterno. In che misura /a politica cantonale e federale delle vie di comunicazioni ha corrisposto alle sfide della territorialità del nostro Cantone? In due secoli si sono sovvertiti i termini della nostra organizzazione territoriale con conseguenze sociali, economiche e politiche sostanzíali. Tuttavía /a politica si è spesso trovata fuori gioco, fra dipendenze dagli scenari altrui, pregiudizievoli ritardi, obiettivi non vístí (agglomerazioní; frontiera) o mal ímpostati (transito internazionale); infine rimane la marginalità relativa del Ticino rispetto alla Confederazione in attesa di una tramersale ferroviaóa alpina che arriva con vent'anni di ritardo, nonché il peso degli effetti storici della frontiera. '

Recently NATURE published a discussion on construction of sills in attempt to prevent or slow melting glaciers that are discharging ice into the ice fjords. Several further papers promptly followed publication of this essentially erroneous article in a respected NATURE magazine. Here it is pointed out that there is a discrepancy of several magnitudes thus excluding a long-term viability to manage the edges of ice fjords or continental ice shelves/sheets due to a phenomenon known as the mega-erratics. These are blocks of hard rocks that are several kilometres in size that have been dislocated by a warmed and wet edges of glacier/ice sheet/ice shelf. This Parliament evidence points out the error that was not apparent to the peer-reviewers at the time and in subsequent papers that followed. The Parliament was shown evidence that large enough obstacles cannot be possibly made to prevent ice discharges due to a progression of melting, that softens and lubricates glaciers, ice caps and ice sheets. The forces unleashed by the ice front exceeds several magnitudes from the conceived objects that sills were proposed. The only, and very only effect is temporary and limited to prevention of warm water incursion where these methods will work for a while in a cold, dry, and relatively stable ice formations. A long-term projections suggested to prevent warmed and water-infested glaciers from discharging ice into the ocean cannot be made as the forces of ice exceed many magnitudes of the sills and levies that can be made of concrete blocks, aggregates or other materials. Thus the prevention of sea level rise by this method for centuries or millennia is not functional one and thus the mitigation and prevention of rubbish gyros in ocean, the supply of housing, nuclear and food production security must be looked at as solution by the ocean littoral states. Several examples of various types of risk to the sustainability of oceans have been presented in addition to the above exposed misconception. This comes with much regret as it appears that one 'hoped-for-solution' to manage the future climate change impacts has largely foundered on the issue that the sills cannot be made strong enough to contain most important, warmed glaciers or edges of unstable ice shelves. However, for a short-term this may offer small-scale solutions provided that costs remain sufficiently small. Aggressively melting ice formations with darkened surfaces, wide spread melt water ponds, or water filled crevasses it does not offer much, if any, prolonged ice stability. This article has analyzed Tanna's myth from a historical point of view retracing its origin up to the Neolithic; it has highlighted the  strong female leading character, as a result of ancient religion who identified Nature in female deities; it has conducted a psychological and sociological analysis, focusing on its most important lessons: there's no duo Man-Nature because we belong to the same system; Man must respect Nature (that is his Destiny, in the end) because this is how it works and because he is part of this cycle that he has not created; there no Nature who is indifferent, rather the Man who thinks or acts childishly wishing to fulfill his own dreams.
Last but not least, this myth reminds us that we own the tools to process pain to find a valuable lesson from it because this is what we must do: maintain the balance between pain and pleasure, the two faces of life.

The authors examine the widely held assumption according to which the highland regions of the Alps were the preserve of animal husbandry, whereas the valleys and the lower districts were used for agriculture. They further ask for documentary proof of the thesis that the crop output per acre decreased with growing altitude. It is shown that a strict separation between areas of livestock holding and of plant production can hardly be identified in ancient Tyrol's sources. Mixed farms were the rule, independent of their geographic position, left aside extreme heights. Also, evidence of decreasing returns to land with growing altitude is more than mixed. Prevailing ideas about an economic self-sufficiency of alpine regions are firmly refuted. Networks of exchange between the valleys and the uplands, of economic, social and cultural nature, are underlined and exemplified.

To understand the role biota play in resilience or vulnerability to environmental change, we investigated soil, plant, and microbial responses to a widespread environmental change, increased nitrogen (N). Our aim was to test the plant–soil threshold hypothesis: that changed biotic structure influences resilience to accumulated changes in N. For six years, we removed one of two codominant species, Geum rossii and Deschampsia caespitosa, in moist-meadow alpine tundra in Colorado, USA. We also manipulated nutrient availability by adding carbon (C) or N, separately and in combination with the species removals.

Consistent with our hypothesis, Geum was associated with soil feedbacks that slowed rates of N cycling and Deschampsia with feedbacks that increased rates of N cycling. After a four-year initial resilience period, Geum dramatically declined (by almost 70%) due to increasing N availability. In contrast, Deschampsia abundance did not respond to changes in N supply; it only responded to the removal of Geum. Forbs and graminoids responded more positively to Deschampsia removal than to Geum removal, indicating stronger competitive effects by Deschampsia. The changed biotic interactions appear to have community-level consequences: after six years of Geum (but not Deschampsia) removal, evenness of the community declined by over 35%.

Increased N affected the soil–microbial feedbacks, particularly in association with Geum. Microbial biomass N declined at higher N, as did the activities of two C-acquiring and one N-acquiring extracellular microbial enzymes. In the presence of Geum, N fertilization slowed the activity of phenol oxidase, a tannin-degrading enzyme, suggesting that microbes shift from degrading Geum-derived compounds. In the absence of Geum, acid phosphatase activity increased, suggesting increased phosphorus limitation in association with Deschampsia.

With continued N deposition forecast for this system, these results suggest that initial resilience of Geum to increased N will be overwhelmed through elimination of microbial feedbacks. Once Geum declines, the loss will indirectly facilitate Deschampsia via competitive release. Because Deschampsia exerts strong competitive effects on subordinate species, increased Deschampsia abundance may be accompanied by a community-wide drop in diversity. We conclude that plant–soil feedbacks through the microbial community can influence vulnerability to exogenous changes in N and contribute to threshold dynamics.

Questo volume presenta gli edifici rurali dei maggenghi, prati ricavati nel bosco e un tempo destinati alla fienagione e al pascolo, posti alle medie quote tra il paese e l’alpeggio.
Tali fabbricati sono analizzati non solo in quanto manufatti architettonici ma anche, e soprattutto, come testimonianza di un sistema antropologico capace di proporre strategie di adattamento e uso sostenibile.

La tempesta Vaia ha evidenziato la necessità di ripensare la gestione forestale nel contesto del cambiamento climatico in corso. Un approccio etnografico-antropologico può integrare il sapere scientifico e la dimensione culturale. In questo articolo, l'esempio della "Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme".

This paper explores approaches of applying the panarchy perspective to a case study of natural resource management in the cultural landscape of upland alpine pastures in northern Italy. The close interaction within the cultural landscape between alpine pasture ecology and the management regimes offers a strong fit with the concept of social-ecological systems and provides insights to appropriate and adaptive management of sites of conservation interest. We examine the limited literature available that offers a resilience understanding of such landscapes and address apparent gaps in the application through our interpretation and use of adaptive cycles and panarchy. We draft conceptual models of adaptive cycles considering ecological and socioeconomic information as acting in separate but interacting domains. Notwithstanding the difficulties in defining and measuring quantitative state variables, we found that a panarchy model can offer a powerful metaphor with practical implications for the maintenance of such alpine cultural landscapes. In effect, our panarchy interpretation of interacting adaptive cycles provides new insights into the description of and the future options for land use in our case study area.
Some issues are only partly developed. We hypothesized measurable parameters that could be related to system resilience, such as alternative states, shifting thresholds, and regime stability, which are all dependent on adaptive processes; but we found quantification difficult even at a conceptual level. Nevertheless, we found it helpful to use nature conservation evaluation as a useful surrogate for measures of capital in adaptive cycles of vegetation. However, care is needed to distinguish between the descriptive metaphor using selective surrogate measures and real ecological behavior. Additionally we recognize the need to integrate this ecological understanding with cycles in socioeconomic domains and consider that interactions between the loss of both social and ecological capital would be interesting issues to explore further in our case study.

We suggest that resilience theory, through its focus on adaptive cycles interacting at different speeds and across varying geographic scales, offers useful insights into resource management and in particular for nature conservation interest sites, by focusing more on dynamics than on an optimal state of species assemblages. This may help to define sites and to achieve the objectives of Natura 2000 through the European Habitats Directive, offering a basis to guide a conservation of processes, in which cultural tradition and local ecological knowledge are valued.

Please click here to download the map associated with this article.The presented map displays the structural and metamorphic evolution of lithotypes from pre-Permian to present. We distinguish pre-Permian rocks (e.g., amphibolite, biotite-bearing gneiss and acid granulite) preserved as roof pendants (i.e., xenoliths) within Permian intrusives. Permian intrusives and hosted xenoliths are then re-equilibrated during Alpine evolution, producing coronitic to mylonitic metaintrusives, due to meter to kilometer-scale fabric gradients, and associated white mica-, glaucophane-bearing gneiss. The map also shows the traces of the superimposed foliations and the fold axial planes. The traces are distinguished on the basis of their relative chronology and mineralogical support. This information, reported on a single map, allows us to reconstruct the successive stages of this fragment belonging to the African plate continental crust, from the pre-Alpine extension, recorded by granulite- to amphibolite-facies xenolits, to the Permian intrusive phase (e.g., Mont Morion, Mont Collon and Matterhorn intrusives) lasting with the Alpine subduction-collision related evolution. The Mont Morion, part of the Mont Morion-Mont Collon-Matterhorn Complex of the Dent Blanche unit, may be interpreted as a multi-stadial Alpine km-scale shear zone, where Permian intrusive rocks are transformed into white mica chlorite-bearing or glaucophane-bearing gneisses along high-strain horizons (100 m-thick), while within low-strain cores (100- to 1000 m-thick), meta-intrusives preserve igneous features and xenoliths of amphibolites, acid granulites and biotite-bearing gneisses. In this paper, an outcrop tectono-metamorphic map (1:10,000 scale) is presented, based upon fieldwork at 1:5,000 together with an interpretative map (1:15,000 scale), in which three dimensional relationships are described, and micro- to mesoscopic fabric types are shown, corresponding to finite strain states recorded by rocks.

The presence of angular bedrock-derived debris on mountain summits worldwide has usually been associated with present or past periglacial frost shattering, thermal fracturing and other climatically-mediated weathering processes. Climatic inferences are commonly made based on such geomorphological evidence, even if frost shattering and other processes are unlikely under present climatic conditions. This paper questions this assumed genetic link between present/past climate and production of angular bedrock-derived debris by describing the geomorphological impacts of lightning strikes on exposed mountain summits. Using examples from the high Drakensberg of eastern Lesotho, southern Africa, the impacts of lightning strikes are described, which includes the generation of angular, fractured bedrock-derived debris. These impacts are identified in the field based on clear and unambiguous criteria that can be used to distinguish between lightning-induced weathering processes and those processes associated with ‘more typical’ alpine weathering. This paper argues that lightning strikes are an important geomorphic agent of, in particular, low-latitude mountain summits, and that to make uncritical climatic inferences based on the presence of ‘frost shattered debris’ on mountain summits is wholly erroneous.

La commissione scientifica Pietro Calderini della sezione CAI di Varallo, in collaborazione con il Dipartimento di Studi Storici dell'Università di Torino, l'associazione culturale Augusta e con la Fondazione Enrico Monti, organizza un convegno dedicato ai valichi minori delle Alpi centro-occidentali. L'evento intende spostare l'attenzione dalla più nota e conosciuta viabilità transalpina, a cui sono state dedicate molte pubblicazioni e convegni negli ultimi anni, ai valichi minori intra alpini, che rispecchiano più dei precedenti la storia delle comunità di valle.

The following article will first consider the similarities and the differences of the Swiss and the Scottish concepts of folk culture, then the author will give a thorough overview of the Scottish Highland Games and their Swiss equivalents today, before examining the origins of either in order to discuss the genuineness of these events and their acceptance and role in their respective communities. For providing a broad and exact overview, the origins of the various athletic disciplines of the ethnic sports competitions in question will also be considered. In the Scottish case, the primary question here is in how far Highland Games are still genuinely Gaelic or whether they have ever been thus, and whether there are any Highland Games that are true to the pre-nineteenth century origins of most athletic disciplines featured. In the Swiss case, it will be shown that the originally staged herdsfolk games have indeed been accepted by the wider Swiss German community and are today largely arranged for locals and less so for tourists, though the latter are welcome. These are the Scottish Highland Games as hosted by various towns and villages all over Scotland, its traditional diaspora overseas and beyond-as will be discussed in the course of the text-and the Swiss Älpler-und-Schwingfeste (alpine herdsfolk festivals featuring traditional Swiss wrestling), the largest of which is the Trachten-und Alphirtenfest (festival of traditional Swiss regional costume and upland herdsfolk) at Unspunnen in the vicinity of Interlaken in the canton of Berne. It is also known as the Unspunnenfest. When the author first heard about the latter event during a holiday in Switzerland in 1987, seeing the pictures of the last Unspunnenfest six years ago, he found some of its features quite similar to the Scottish Highland Games with which he was already familiar having then travelled to Scotland regularly since 1981. Having now lived in Scotland for a whole decade and matured into a fully-blown scholar of Scottish Gaelic language and culture and being equally knowledgeable in Scottish Lowland culture, yet also familiar with and interested in Swiss culture, the author decided to contribute to this project his study of the role of Highland Games and Älplerspiele in today's Scottish and Swiss communities.
