The aim of my research is to analyse, following a comparative approach, the political, social and cultural processes that mainly have influenced the transformation of concentration and transit camps in lieux de memoire in Italy and France. In particular, I will study four of them: the Rice mill of San Sabba in Trieste, Fossoli’s camp and the Museum Monument to the Political and Racial Deportee in Carpi, Drancy and Natzweiler-Struthof’s camps. In Postwar, the marginality of their role in European collective memory strongly contrasts with their relevance in Nazi concentration camp system. Although, they have become important references for national identity, comforting graves for families where they could mourn the victims, monumental palimpsests where History is told to the public, but also touristic attractions similar to other historical monuments. This research is not only about the transformation of the four former camps into sites of memory, but also it will analyse their role i...

s in order of presentation: Paul Weindling, Anna von Villiez, Aleksandra Loewenau (Oxford Brookes University), and Nichola Farron (Amsterdam): Researching Experiment Victims – Findings and Problems The victims of medical experiments and other forms of coerced research form a distinctive but still inadequately understood set of WW2 and Holocaust victims. Leading Nazis, notably Himmler, gave much attention to devising and enabling experiments. The numbers and identities of victims, and the very diverse locations, have long only been known in terms of isolated clusters. The aim of our research has been to build up a composite picture by piecing together fragmented victim records. Essentially the methodology is one of “record linkage” with the overall aim of reconstructing the total population (or at least as near to this as is possible) of victims. This provides the basis for a structural analysis in terms of victim cohorts, perpetrator profiles, and the agencies sponsoring such resear...
When a letter arrives for unhappy but ordinary Harry Potter, a decade-old secret is revealed to him. His parents were wizards, killed by a Dark Lord's curse when Harry was just a baby, and which he somehow survived. Escaping from his unbearable Muggle guardians to Hogwarts, a wizarding school brimming with ghosts and enchantments, Harry stumbles into a sinister adventure when he finds a threeheaded dog guarding a room on the third floor. Then he hears of a missing stone with astonishing powers which could be valuable, dangerous, or both.
Colour Literacy Forum #8, 2024
Our visual system detects variations in the intensity and overall balance of spectral composition of the light reaching our eyes, but also does much more, seemingly instantly arriving at unconscious estimates of the overall spectral reflectances of objects, and of the intensity and overall balance of spectral composition of the light illuminating those objects. We perceive these unconscious estimates of spectral properties as colours. Colours of light can be described in terms of the attributes of hue, brightness and either saturation or colourfulness, while colours of objects can be described in terms of the more familiar attributes of hue, lightness and chroma, among others. Using an orange cube on a tiled floor as an illustration, this presentation will describe and contrast these six colour attributes and show how they apply to our superimposed colour perceptions (1) of objects, (2) of the light illuminating objects, and (3) of the light reaching our eyes from objects.
