Digital literacy and technology education has gained much relevance in humanities and heritage related disciplines during the recent decades. Against this background, the purpose of this article is to examine the current state of educational programs in digital cultural heritage and related disciplines primarily in Europe with supplemental information from the US. A further aim is to highlight core topics, challenges, and demands, and to show innovative formats and prospects.
Policy and Practice Challenges for Equality in Education, 2021
Well-educated populations are important aspects of any contemporary society, as education increases national and global development and the positive expansion of communities to participate actively in civil matters also increases. Educational equality is based on the principles of administrative competence and fairness of access and distribution of resources, opportunities, and treatment, which ensures success for every person. Ensuring equal access to quality education requires addressing a wide range of persistent inequalities in society and includes a stronger focus on how different forms of inequalities intersect to produce unequal opportunities or outcomes that affect marginalized and vulnerable groups. Policy and Practice Challenges for Equality in Education takes a multifaceted look at issues of equality and inequality in education as related to policy, practice, resource access, and distribution. As such, this book explores the potential practices in education that serve to mitigate and transform unproductive practices which have left societies scarred by social and educational inequalities. The chapters provide a critical analysis of the manifestations of inequalities in various educational contexts and discerns how broader social inequalities are informed by education-related matters. This book is ideal for sociologists, administrators, instructors, policymakers, data scientists, community leaders, practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students interested in educational equality and the unique challenges being faced worldwide.
Law and Development. Balancing Principles and Values., 2019
The books aim is to look at the concept of ‘development’ from alternative perspectives and analyze how different approaches thereto influence law. ‘Sustainable development’ is about balancing economic progress, environmental protection, individual rights, and collective interests. It requires a holistic approach to human beings in their individual and social dimensions, which can be seen as a reference to ‘integral human development’ – a concept present in ethics. ‘Development’ may be seen as a value or a goal. But it also has a normative dimension influencing lawmaking and legal application. It is a rule of interpretation, which harmonizes the application of conflicting norms, and which is often based on the ethical and anthropological assumptions of the decision maker. This research project is also about how different approaches to ‘development’ and their impact on law may coexist in pluralistic and multicultural societies and how to evaluate their legitimacy. The problem may be analyzed from the overarching theoretical perspective as well as based on case studies stemming out from different legal branches.
Almost all the territories ruled by oversea colonial empires in Africa gained their independence after the Second World War. It did not change the fact that most of those newly independent countries did not cease their connections with their former colonial rulers. For some scholars, the decolonization of Africa did not happen and in one form or another the colonial relationship endures to this day.2 The admission of China to the World Trade Organization changed the political and economic status quo in Africa as well as in any other regions. Chinese search for commodities, natural resources and markets have stark resemblance with early colonial goals of the European states. After the original Scramble for Africa it is possible that we are witnessing a new, yet unnamed scramble. This thesis aims to analyze the reasons behind the military interventions carried out by France in Africa and the application of neorealist approaches to the modern events are deemed useful to demonstrate that. The demonstration of the relevance of neorealist approaches is a byproduct in this context. Four countries in Africa have been chosen for the issues on hand: Ivory Coast, Mali, Central African Republic, and Libya. The chronology of the events happened prior and after the interventions are investigated and to find out the connections between the economic and political events in Africa, Chinese and French policies are analyzed.
Visions of Sustainability for Arts Education. Value, Challenge and Potential, 2022
This chapter discusses questions of digitalization in the context of aesthetics, arts, and cultural education, and cultural sustainability. We first outline in what respect (post-)digitalization becomes relevant with regards to the UNESCO Sustainable Development Goals. (Post-) digitalization, we argue, must be understood as an integral part of aesthetics, arts, and cultural education, because it has already brought forth (new) cultural techniques relevant in the understanding of and thus the participation in one’s own culture and on a global scale. After introducing the concept of post-digitalization, we present two case studies from research projects within this research area Digitalization & Arts and Cultural Education, analyzing creative coding in online “learning ecologies” (Post-Digital Art Practices in Cultural Education) and the virtual character Hatsune Miku (Post-Internet Art(s) Education Research) respectively. Following their preliminary findings, we focus on collective creative practices as (new) post-digital cultural techniques and on distributed production effects that arise in post-digital settings. Questions of structure, of implicit power relations and hierarchy, and of new processes of subjectivation are addressed in particular. We argue that it is precisely aesthetics, arts, and cultural education that have the potential to contribute to how we not only understand (post-)digitality but also shape it towards cultural sustainability.

People and the sea: A values perspective in the conservation management of maritime heritage in the Philippines As demonstrated in archaeology, underwater cultural heritage (UCH) has provided significant contributions towards the understanding of heritage connections across the globe. However, the development of the discipline in the Philippines has also been hampered by confusing legalities, treasure hunting activities, and financial constraints that diminish the influence of its impact and potential reach. More so, the effects of natural hazards, climate change, and other human activities on UCH have not yet been fully documented, making it more susceptible to potential threats and destruction. The COVID-19 pandemic makes archaeological campaigns and monitoring even more difficult. These considerations make Philippine UCH vulnerable and raise questions whether its contribution will still be relevant for the present and future generations. This article provides a status update of underwater archaeological activities and synthesises the challenges of managing UCH in the Philippines in the past 40 years. It outlines the practices, partnerships, and transitions made by various stakeholders in response to the growing discipline and community interest. This article problematises the value ascription of these stakeholders to UCH as seen in conventional arrangements, development of policies, and bureaucratic set-ups. The applicability of the values-led theory and the people-centred management model is examined given the traditional valuing of UCH that is material or fabric-based. The gaps pointed here are opportunities to build a shared stewardship view that connects UCH in the entirety of people and the sea wellbeing.
