The understanding of the relationship between outdoor activities and outdoor urban spaces is a complex issue, comprising a mutual study between urban space configuration and human behaviors aspect. Jan Gehl and Birgitte Svarre 1987 confirmed that when the outdoor areas are of high quality, the outdoor activity take place with the same frequency, and they tend to take a longer time. From this point, this paper presents an investigation method of the quality of outdoor urban space basing on the investigation of user pattern. El-Houria plaza in Biskra city, Algeria was chosen as case study. Behavioral mapping and questionnaire surveys were applied, for data collection and analysis on March, where the mean daily maximum temperature in the city is 24°C. The findings from this study show that there is a segregation in the continuity of outdoor activities during the day, due to the poor quality of plaza, as well as this confirmed that the continuity of outdoor activities in space depends o...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Urban space is like a living thing that affects the behavior of participants and is also influenced by their behavior, whether it affects the body or the meaning of the space. The importance of this issue has laid the foundation of environmental psychology, so that it has attracted the attention of designers and urban planners to the application of the basic components of this branch of psychology in the design of urban spaces and public open environments. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of environment and behavior synomorph on the type of activity of users. The case study was Enghelab Street as an urban space has a historical background and a trans-regional functional scale was located in center of Tehran is suitable for examining patterns of environmental psychology, types of activities and their behaviors, as well as suggestions from field studies conducted. METHODS: This research is a descriptive-analytical research based on the basic-applied purpose. In data collection, quantitative-qualitative method was performed using exploratory studies and questionnaire analysis with SPSS software and analysis (version 22.0). FINDINGS: The growing number of participants respectively, make use of this space for compulsory, social, and optional activities. According to the required activities such as roundtrip time from work, most periods are between 7 to 11 a.m. after 6 to 9 p.m. The results obtained from the implementation of the Kruskal-Wallis test on the data show that the use of sample space for doing purpose compulsory, optional, and social activities is of equal importance in the sense that designing urban space following behavior and need is equally important among the users of space who choose with different purposes of social, optional, and compulsory activities. In more detail the differences in the indicators were in the intimacy component (Sig: 0.024). CONCLUSION: These findings may provide that it is not important in what propose person use the place, the quality of urban place should be presented in the design of all public spaces of the city.

With the increasing density of built spaces in urban areas, the need for open spaces increases every day. Squares are one of the most important of these open spaces. Urban squares allow various activities and exhibit functional differences based on location and culture. The diversity of activities conducted in squares is extremely important for the quality and viability of liveable urban spaces. Urban residents prefer spaces that are suitable for individual requirements and desires and allow for a variety of activities. These spaces also contribute to social life. This article aimed to determine the user profile, occupancy, facilities and activity diversity at the Atatürk Plaza (Trabzon urban square) in Trabzon, the capital city of Trabzon Province, Turkey. The occupants of the square and their numbers were analysed via the behaviour observation method. As a result of the observations conducted in the square over one year, 17 activities were identified. The majority of these activit...

Statements of problem: The presence of people in urban areas with the aim of "being in space" is one of the components contributing to vitality of urban spaces, which leads to the promotion of social relationships, the increase of natural security, the sense of belonging to the place by increasing the possibility of occurrence of individual and collective memories and reducing the crime rate in the city. Finding the right solution to find the basis for the design of spaces is a problem that has been particularly striking urban architects and designers in recent years and refers to the necessity of this research. The lack of non-mental methods that can be used to study and analyze behaviors in space, both in architecture and in urban planning, is quite tangible. Goal: The purpose of the present research is to explain the forms of occurrence and behavioral patterns in urban spaces. By studying one of the important urban spaces of Tehran, Tajrish Square, we try to provide a comprehensive analysis based on the recognition of behavioral patterns in this urban space. The main question of this research is about the relation of various dimensions of urban space with the formation of behavioral patterns. Other questions are also raised, including: What are the different dimensions, criteria, and indicators of urban space affecting behavioral patterns? What is the impact of different dimensions, criteria, and indicators mentioned on occurrence of different behaviors of citizens in the urban space, and in particular in Tajrish square? Research method: For the analysis of urban spaces, Tajrish Square has been selected as an urban space with high level of actions and diverse activities. Qualitative analysis and observation using behavioral mapping techniques, interviews, and photo analysis were conducted to assess the status and to answer the research questions. Conclusion: In this research it is proved that various behavioral patterns including walking, standing and sitting is under the influence of three main components of functional-activity (including indicators of variability of land use, type of activity, public activity and type of Urban sidewall), environmental-physical (including indicators of passages and access roads, flexibility, facilities and services, valuable perspectives and visual qualities) and cultural-social (including indicators of social presence features and social interactions). Behavioral patterns are heavily influenced by land use and presenting amenities in urban spaces that encourage citizens to develop different behavioral patterns. The visual qualities are one of the important criteria for making communication between strangers in the urban space and the indicator of selective activities in inspecting the criteria of social interactions is strengthened or weakened by environmental conditions.
This article focuses on the study of public open space of Kadıköy square. The objective is to assess user perceptions, satisfaction and patterns of outdoor space use. A qualitative approach is used to gain insights into aspects of human-environment intersections, for this purpose, a questionnaire survey and observation were conducted to examine this interaction. This research studies how people use public open spaces and what are the factors that impact the use of these spaces and what physical features are the most influential on the behavior patterns and specific activities related to the space in Kadıköy square.

ABS TRACT: This S tudy has discussed the meaning of public space and has shown that public spaces are an essential part of people's lives. It has also identified the key urban design and architectural ideologies that have influenced the shape of the built environment, and has discussed how each has perceived the value of public spaces. In the following provides an overview of the relationship between people's behavior and experience of public spaces, from an environmental psychology perspective. Methodologies adopted for the s tudy. A combination of both quantitative and qualitative methods of collecting data has been used. The purpose of this s tudy is to explore how public spaces influence human behavior in order to gain an appreciation of the significant role that public spaces play in the daily lives of people. This S tudy has es tablished that human behavior and experience of public spaces can be influenced by the physical and ambient features of the built environment. It has been identified that physical features may include buildings, s treets, landscaping, land forms and architectural elements, and ambient features may include sound, smell, temperature and illumination. It has also been identified that other factors such as age, gender, culture and ethnicity are also capable of affecting the way people respond to the environment. In addition to identifying the perspectives of the users of public spaces through the focus group, the s tudy also identified the role and perspectives of urban planners and consultant designers. These built environment professionals have a significant role in shaping public spaces.

This paper presents some of the findings of the European project, RUROS, concentrating on the effect of microclimatic conditions on the use of open spaces in an urban Mediterranean environment. The findings confirm that there is a strong relationship between microclimatic conditions and use of open spaces. Regarding the users of open spaces, a sensitivity to the summer heat was apparent for the age category >65. The spatial distribution of the interviewees demonstrates that in summer, visitors prefer to sit in shaded areas, whereas in autumn and winter sunlit areas are more popular. Observations of the use of space revealed that air temperature and solar radiation were found to be the most dominant parameters in relation to the use of space, with wind speed and relative humidity having a weak effect. In general, people prefer shaded areas at higher air temperatures. However, as high air temperature is a factor contributing to discomfort, overall presence is reduced when air temperature rises significantly. The preference of sun, differs from season to season, depending on the activities taking place in the areas (either designated or not). The diurnal pattern of the use of space also reveals a strong dependency on meteorological parameters. Regarding the time of maximum attendance, this is found in the evening during summer, while there is a transition of the time of maximum attendance towards noon as the season progresses from summer to winter. Daytime attendance figures of autumn and winter are 300-400% higher than in the summer. The need open spaces cover and the social ties provided may also be traced by analyzing the social composition of the interviewees and the reasons bringing them in the space.
Sustainable open spaces in cities can enhance humans' day to day life. Among the determinants of the quality of outdoor environments, high priority is given to ambient climatic conditions. This research is aimed to explore the usage pattern of outdoor spaces in an educational precinct and discover its linkage to thermal conditions. The target population was the users of the main open spaces of an educational precinct selected as the case study in Melbourne, Australia. The data collection methods included field survey (questionnaire and concurrent measurement) and unobtrusive observation. The data obtained was used to understand the characteristics of usage pattern in the three seasons (spring 2014, summer 2015 and autumn 2015). The results indicated the seasonal usage pattern of the precinct and the significance of function of the place on people's presence outdoors. The research findings are expected to inform guidelines on managing outdoor spaces, particularly within university campuses.

one of the important effects of sustainable urban environments is motivating people for outdoor activities. The phenomena of street simultaneously come from the west into urban spaces with automobile and designers doesn't have much of a role to set and design of this space in relation to physical activities. Consequently, these spaces are not adjusted to the walking behavior of people. In order to encourage walking among people it is important to know how pedestrian travel pattern can be affected by the physical environment. The aim of this paper is to show the influences of physical characteristics, spaces and land use of neighborhood Commercial Street in the Johor Bahru City Centre of Malaysia to the behavioral responses and attitudes of people. In this research, the inquiry employed a multiple-method survey involving a variety of techniques including direct observation, walk-by observation and pedestrian counts to collect data on the behavior of people on the street. The resu...

Amongst the various indigenous societies across the planet, alcohol has always played a pivotal role in shaping and preserving different forms of social, cultural, communal, personal, and familial values in an inter-generational and transcultural manner. With the advent of European colonisation, over different segments of time and space across the globe, this community practice was disrupted and dismantled as unmodern, unhygienic, non-civilising, and dehumanising. However, such community practices in Bhutan remained unaffected till the beginning of the 21st century. In 2007, with the establishment of a democratic governing system, as Bhutan started welcoming foreign investors, the West (Europe and USA) invaded the local markets of Bhutan. Gradually, the individuals were attracted towards the western-branded alcoholic drinks and the consumption of the locally brewed alcoholic drinks started declining. Keeping these arguments at the forefront, this article makes an effort to socio-historically analyse the various ways through which the culture of brewing, consuming, and sharing the locally brewed alcoholic drinks functions as a tool to resist the westernisation of the culture of drinking in contemporary Bhutan.
