Of the five principal global carbon pools, the ocean pool is the largest at 38.4 trillion metric tons (mt) in the surface layer, followed by the fossil fuels (4.13 trillion mt), soils (2.5 trillion mt to a depth of one meter), biotic (620 billion mt), and atmospheric pools (800 billion mt). If the fluxes among terrestrial pools are combined, annual total carbon flows across the pools average around 60 billion mt, with managed ecosystems (croplands, grazing lands, and plantations) accounting for 57 percent of that total. Thus, land managers have custody of more annual carbon flows than any other group.

Decomposing organic matter and soil are crucial components of the global carbon cycle in terrestrial environments where carbon is stored in living biomass. Carbon is transferred between these systems and the atmosphere through photosynthesis, respiration, decomposition, and combustion. Human activities alter the carbon stocks in these pools by altering the land use patterns of the region. Hence, soils are both carbon sources and sink with great potential to reduce climate change. In the significant terrestrial carbon sink, soil holds twice as much carbon as the atmosphere and vegetation combined. After being the primary terrestrial carbon storage of the planet, even so, there is strong evidence that over the past several decades, significant amounts of carbon have been lost from soils of natural and agricultural ecosystems due to erosion, leaching, and enhanced soil respiration. Therefore, even a minor change will significantly affect soil carbon sequestration, the global carbon cyc...

Aggregate soil carbon distribution and stock in the soil in the form of a carbon pool is important for soil fertility and sequestration. The amount of carbon pool and other nutrients statues of the soil are to benefit plants, animal and the environment in the long run. This study was carried out at Akure North and South Local Government; the study area is one of the 18 Local Government Areas of Ondo State in the Southwest geo-political zone of Nigeria. The sites were divided into Map Grids and geo-referenced with Global Positioning System (GPS). Horizons were designated and morphological description carried out on the field. Pedons were characterized and classified according to USDA soil taxonomy. The local government area shares boundaries with; Ikere Local Government (LG) in the North, Ise Orun LG in the northwest, Ifedore LG in the northeast Akure South LG in the East, Ose LG in the South East, and Owo LG in the South. SOC-pool at Federal College of Agriculture topsoil horizon A2 is significantly higher than all horizons, 67.83 th⁻¹. The chemical properties of the pedons have shown that the soil is very strongly acidic to neutral reaction (4.68 – 6.73). The nutrients status of the soil topsoil A1 and A2 generally indicates that the soils have a low potential for retaining plant nutrients, and therefore call for adequate soil management.

1] We present data on soil organic carbon (SOC) inventory for 7050 soil cores collected from a wide range of environmental conditions throughout Australia. The data set is stratified over the spatial distribution of trees and grass to account for variability of SOC inventory with vegetation distribution. We model controls on SOC inventory using an index of water availability and mean annual temperature to represent the climatic control on the rate of C input into the SOC pool and decomposition of SOC, in addition to the fraction of soil particles <63 mm in diameter as a measure of textural control on SOC stabilization. SOC inventories in the top 30 cm of soil increase from 35 mg/cm 2 in the driest regions to a modeled plateau with respect to a threshold of water availability at 335 mg/cm 2 , excluding variables controlling SOC decomposition. Above this threshold, decomposition factors begin to control SOC inventory, which we attribute to energetic control on microbial decomposition rates, and relatively weak stabilization of SOC in association with fine particles. When combined, these relationships provide an overall prediction of SOC inventory that accounts for 89-90% of the variance observed in the measured data set. Deviations from this relationship are most likely due to additional factors that also control decomposition rate such as hydrochemical and soil drainage conditions not accounted for by soil texture. Outliers within this data set are explained with respect to these conditions.

The Oxford Handbook of Rhetoric and Political Theory, 2023
This chapter discusses Leo Strauss's conception of Platonic political philosophy and the role played by rhetoric by comparing it with Hermann Cohen's reading of Maimonides and Plato. The chapter argues that Strauss views the separation of philosophy from politics as itself a rhetorical ploy intended to shield the political character of rst philosophy. The chapter thus discusses the senses in which both philosophy and religion are deeply rhetorical, viz. political discourses. The political character of philosophy is best understood by reconstructing the Platonic ideal of the philosopher king under conditions of prophetic revelation. From this perspective, both Strauss and Cohen hold the view that Athens and Jerusalem, philosophy and revelation, should be understood as being closer to each other than they are usually considered to be.
