Carbon is transferred between these systems and the atmosphere through photosynthesis, respiration, decomposition, and combustion. Human activities alter the carbon stocks in these pools by altering the land use patterns of the region. Hence, soils are both carbon sources and sink with great potential to reduce climate change. In the significant terrestrial carbon sink, soil holds twice as much carbon as the atmosphere and vegetation combined.
