A previously established general framework for the description of long-wavelength quantum states of electrons in a crystal with topological defects is used to discuss the scattering of electrons on a screw dislocation. The corresponding Schrödinger equation contains contributions of the type of a vector potential as well as of a repulsive scalar potential. Together they give rise to modified Aharonov-Bohm interferences in the scattering amplitude, for which the far-field expression is calculated exactly. ͓S0163-1829͑99͒01121-2͔

We investigate the quantum scattering of one electron by a screw dislocation with an internal magnetic flux. The Aharonov-Bohm effect for bound states is analyzed and we demonstrate that the wave function and the energy spectra associated with the particle depend on the Burgers vectors of dislocation and the magnetic flux. We also calculate Berry's phase associated to the dynamics of the electrons in this background. For some specific values of the magnetic flux there is a matching of the effects produced by the flux and by the dislocation in such a way that there is neither scattering nor Berry's phase.

In this contribution we present a study of the quantum scattering of a neutral particle with an induced electric dipole moment in the presence of a charged topological defect exposed to an uniform magnetic field. We consider a geometric modification in the Hamiltonian provoked by charged screw dislocation and a repulsive potential originated from deformation potential theory. We analyze the quantum scattering for this electric dipole by this topological defect. We determine the condition for which it is possible to find a geometric phase acquired by the wave function of the electric dipole.

The influence of frozen-in topological defects in a crystal on the long-wavelength quantum states of a particle is considered. In the continuum limit of a conveniently defined tight-binding model one is led to a covariant Schrödinger equation on a Riemann-Cartan manifold. When the tight-binding transfer energies are assumed to depend on the local lattice deformations caused by the defects, additional noncovariant terms are generated in the Hamiltonian. These terms generate bound states of the particle to edge dislocations and enhance the scattering of particles on screw dislocations. [S0031-9007(98)05432-5]

In this paper, we investigate the influence of a screw dislocation on the energy levels and the wavefunctions of an electron confined in a two-dimensional pseudoharmonic quantum dot under the influence of an external magnetic field inside a dot and Aharonov-Bohm field inside a pseudodot. The exact solutions for energy eigenvalues and wavefunctions are computed as functions of applied uniform magnetic field strength, Aharonov-Bohm flux, magnetic quantum number and the parameter characterizing the screw dislocation, the Burgers vector. We investigate the modifications due to the screw dislocation on the light interband absorption coefficient and absorption threshold frequency. Two scenarios are possible, depending on if singular effects either manifest or not. We found that as the Burgers vector increases, the curves of frequency are pushed up towards of the growth of it. One interesting aspect which we have observed is that the Aharonov-Bohm flux can be tuned in order to cancel the screw effect of the model.

The channeling process in a crystal bent by dislocations is considered. The Schrö dinger equation for the channeled particle motion is separated between longitudinal and transverse parts. The transverse potential and the frequency of channeling radiation in the perfect channel and the two regions of dislocation affected channels are calculated. The corresponding wave functions for the transverse and longitudinal motions are also calculated. In this work, we specifically investigate the effects of longitudinal motion of the particle on the dechanneling parameter and the frequency. The continuity of wave functions and their derivatives is used at the three boundaries and reflection and transmission coefficients are found using these boundary conditions. Finally, we consider the two cases of maximum and minimum dechanneling probabilities.

By almost any metric, academic research publishing has exploded during the past 15 years, boasting a more diverse and accessible marketplace for ideas and research than ever before. The number of scientific papers alone is said to have doubled between 2003 and 2016.2 New handbooks, encyclopedias, series, and journals have appeared at a breathtaking rate, while new online and open-access publications appear monthly, and datasets are now published on a wide array of digital platforms. Publications offer color printing, open access—even gold open access—double-blind peer review, promises of exceedingly brief turnarounds from submission to publication, and in-house alternatives should your article be rejected from your first-choice journal. On top of it all, publications are being made more accessible online by many traditional publishers, as well as through warehouses like eScholarship and for-profit services like Academia.edu and Research Gate, in addition to pirate services like Library Genesis. Yet, despite so many mechanisms, sanctioned and unsanctioned, that aspire to level the playing field, why are many researchers increasingly speaking of the failure of peer review, a tendency toward overly narrow specialization in fields such as archaeology, and being overwhelmed by the sheer volume of research, much of it of low quality?

Consisting of contributions from a host of international scholars (in fields as diverse as literature, architecture, philosophy, and education), Alain Beauclair and Josh Toth's Nature and Its Unnatural Relations: Points of Access intercedes in ongoing debates about accessing, defining, and respecting a world humans continue to misuse and misunderstand-and that, as a result, is becoming increasingly inhospitable. The chapters shuttle between a variety of aesthetic and philosophical concerns-from theology and Biblical interpretation to colonialism, hermeneutics, phenomenology, worlding, posthumanism, and speculative realism. These varied approaches are united by a single aporetic thread: efforts to surmount the problem of "human access" invariably risk repeating (ever more blindly) the violence and immorality of anthropocentrism. We seem trapped in the cul-de-sac of the Anthropocene. To discover potential new exits, the contributors consider whether it is possible or advisable to abandon so-called "correlationism"-of art, of literature, of technology. If it is, then how? If not, how might we more ethically reembrace our innately corruptive relations with a world of non-human others? How might we free "nature" (finally) from the demands of human action and human thought without mendaciously reinscribing humanity's distance from it or denying a proximity that is only traversable by artificial means?
