The article contributes to the debate about the nature of the Francoist State through the study of the political personnel in the institutions of the regime, considering that it was a parafacist regime. It studies the socioeconomic and political profile of the rank and file officers in the high state institutions, the civil governors, and urban and rural city councils. It is demonstrated the renewal of the political personnel, selected for being members of Falange and for their active participation in the Spanish Civil War. The article concludes with a characterisation of the political culture of the Francoist political personnel.

Este trabajo aborda la definición de una tradición estilística detectada al interior del conjunto de tabletas para alucinógenos provenientes de distintos cementerios ubicados en los oasis de San Pedro de Atacama (Antofagasta, Chile) y del noroeste de Argentina. Esta tarea no había sido emprendida previamente, a pesar de que dichas tabletas conforman un grupo mayor de artefactos con características comunes resaltantes, lo cual hace posible su discriminación tanto en términos formales como iconográficos, así como establecer diferencias frente a otros estilos/tradiciones detectados en el conjunto de elementos que integran el equipo alucinógeno registrado. Dicha tradición cuenta con dos estilos diferentes, cuyas respectivas iconografías resultan ajenas a lo reconocido para el área Circumpuneña; por lo mismo, el análisis que se realiza da luces respecto del posible lugar de origen de esta tradición en general, y de dichos estilos en particular, planteándolos además como indicadores de los flujos del intercambio ritual macroregional. Junto con ello, mediante el análisis de los contextos funerarios de algunas de estas tabletas se obtienen datos acerca de la ubicación temporal de los dos estilos mencionados para esta tradición, y se discute la identidad social de los individuos que las poseyeron en vida.

This essay reconstructs a late-Ayyubid court case in Damascus that was litigated repeatedly between 651/1253 and 655/1257, five years prior to the beginning of Sultan Baybars’s judicial reform in 660/1262. The case involved the marriage of a minor orphan girl. The Shāfiʿī chief justice of Damascus initially permitted the marriage but later instructed his deputy judge to annul it, a move that outraged jurists and elicited a transregional debate. I reconstruct the case proceedings and ensuing controversies primarily from an unpublished treatise by Abū Shāma al-Maqdisī (d. 665/1268), which is partly corroborated by contemporaneous fatwas and historical chronicles. The case illustrates that pre-reform Ayyubid courts lacked the coherent jurisprudence and institutional oversight that might have prevented abuses of power by unscrupulous and inept officials. Although Baybars’s reform has long been recognized as a critical turning point in Islamic legal history, this case exposes the social and institutional dilemmas that the reform sought to address.

This course engages with modern and contemporary critical theory through an encounter with late 19 th and 20 th-century fiction from North America. We traverse several literary periods and movements, reading texts in company with critical interpretations. We will emphasize developing an ability to formulate an argument about a text and theorization in support of that argument.
