The automatic transmission in automobiles is a unit which supplies the power from the clutch to the differential.There are some types of gear transmission system.These transmission system help to improve the economy and efficiency of the work transfer.some machines with limited speed ranges,such as few forklifts and lawn mowers only use torque convertor.Besides the traditional automatic transmission,there are also other types such as continuously variable transmission ,dual clutch transmission and automated manual transmission system.gear shifting strategy is the core of intelligent control of any automatic transmission used in modern vehicles.It directly influences the vehicle performance,drivers feel and fuel economy seperately.the comparison between automated manual transmission and automatic transmission system is essential.the strategy of the gear shifting in maunal trasnmission syetem is specified.

In last few years, automobile manufacturers are improving performance of transmission system thereby improving gearshift quality. This paper is based on the project "Power Assisted Gear Shifting Mechanism for Automobiles". This is a design, fabrication and implementation project. The project provides solution for gear shifting for the cars. The passenger cars that now ply on the road have transmission either of manual or automatic type of gear changing. The manual type of transmission is preferred for the perfect performance without a loss in power but a compromise for comfort ness. In this type automatic system of power transmission there is easiness of gear shifting but there is a definite loss of power and mileage.

Automation has been an integral part of the automotive industry with today's technology. Two-wheeler automobile vehicle also called motorcycle is widely used all over the world. However, most often in the market, the gear mechanism used in the motorcycle is manual. Automatic gear shifting in the motorcycle enhances a smooth ride, but the fuel efficiency is comparatively lesser when compared to the gear featured vehicles. In this paper, various mechanisms have been reviewed that converts the conventional gear mechanism to an automatic gear mechanism. Also, manual and automatic gear mechanisms have been studied along with their comparison. This paper refers to the development of automatic gear shifting in the motorcycle to date. I. INTRODUCTION Today in the metro cities the issue of road jams is rising day by day and the issue of pressing handheld clutches and changing gears after every step of the road is faced with people riding on two motorcycles in particular. The drivers who have the capacity to do other things have an unneeded exhaustion. Furthermore, if one of the functions is either not symbolised by the clutch or machinery, the engine listens suddenly and often stops the motorcycle with a jerk that sometimes leads to road accidents [1]. Some of the developments have already been made for the engine gearbox to transfer the torque from the engine shaft to the motorcycle's rear wheel. The gearbox is used under various driving conditions to adjust the torque. The gearbox increases the torque required to start and shift the motorcycle. There is no need for high torque after starting or running the engine, so the gearbox is transmitting the optimal torque at high speed onto the rear wheel. There is a need for some effort from the motorcycle driver to operate the gearbox and adjust the equipment. The gears in a motorcycle are pushed with a foot lever. The flywheel is also clutched between the motor and the transmission to attach and disengage the flywheel. So, it is important to take these two operations perfectly to move the motorcycle smoothly. For most new drivers, this shifting device has become a tough operation. This may also lead to injury prevention [2]. The gearbox for transmitting the torque from the driveshaft to the motorcycle rear wheel is used in every other standard motorcycle. Torque can vary according to the various driving conditions, i.e. when the vehicle starts the gearbox increases the torque needed to start the vehicle. When the vehicle is on its way, a high torque is not required, and for this speed, it transmits the optimum torque to the rear wheel. Some other considerations, such as the footgear paddle used to drive the gear and hand clutch, for the engagement and disengagement of the flywheel, are also employed. These two operations have to be timed in a fast, smooth driving of the motorcycle. And for anyone especially new driver, this whole cycle for gear change can be so tiresome. The automatic gear shift system therefore not only eliminates injuries but also improves motor performance and fuel performance [3].
— In the current world of automobile, gear shifting system are basically classified into manually and automatic. Gear shifting system plays crucial role in automobile to vary the speed. So automatic gear shifting system is costly than manually gear shifts system but manually gear shifting system is difficult to understand for handicap people or it take physical effort to change gear. To overcome this disadvantage we try to apply touch screen based automatic gear shifting system. In that system by touch on touch screen panel gear is shift. By applying this gear shifting system it gives cost reduction in compare of automatic gear shift system and flexible or simple then manually gear shift system, and by applying this system on automobile it's easier to drive car for everyone. It also reduces the possibility of transmission error of manual gear system. The purpose of this research is to reduce physical effort of human being and they can concentrate only in driving and prevent the accidents. In present report we studied literature review biased on this review we define transmission system and gear shifting mechanism to modify a manual gear shifting mechanism.

For the vehicle to move forward the engine has to be connected to driving wheels so as to propel the vehicle. The engine rotates at relatively high speeds, while the wheels are required to turn at slower speeds. The torque requirements of the vehicle vary as per the prevailing conditions of load, terrain etc. Gear box provides different gear ratios between the engine and the driving wheels, to suit the varying road conditions such as when climbing hills, traversing rough road or sandy road or pulling a load. The required gear shift for providing varying torque requirements can be obtained either manually or automatically. As conventional gear-boxes are capable to vary the gear arrangement according to fluctuating load. In this paper fabrication of an automated gearbox is done and comparison of torque, rpm is carried out with standard elementary equations. Finally we conclude the efficiency of this fabricated model in terms of gear shifting and power transmission. The performance of this gearbox can be increased to the standard values by varying the design parameters of gears and pre-requisites.
~ ABSTRACT ~ The core objective of this project is to take the T5 Tremec manual transmission from the current HEV project vehicle and develop a system that will make it function as an automatic transmission. The methods used to create such a system include: a designated communication protocol and control unit hardware, small but appropriate motors for performing the transmission shift movements, a control model for receiving commands from the vehicle and orchestrating the motors. Through experimentation, the first control unit (a MotoTron ECU) was deemed overly complicated to develop a program for due to the fact the ECU was repurposed and not designed for what the team had intended. This ECU was replaced by an easy-to-program Arduino device. The control system is built to the point of integrating control of the three necessary motors for shifting and currently being developed to allow control of these motors over the CAN bus.

The world is moving towards a cleaner and sustainable technology, an electric car is one of them. Nowadays most of the electric cars are using manual transmission which can be converted in to semi-automatic and automatic transmission by installing an electro-pneumatic shifting mechanism. In this article, work concerning about the product design of shifter on a sequential transmission is described. The mechanism is achieved by using a pneumatic cylinder, sensors, solenoid valves, air reservoir, microcontroller and paddle shifter. The gears can be shifted either by the driver or an electronic control unit (ECU) on a real time basis. ECU takes input from the paddles attached behind the steering wheel or vehicle speed sensor and the gear is shifted by the pneumatic cylinders, controlled by a control unit through the solenoid valves. Numerical results for the automated shifting system in the vehicle show an increment of 26% in the top speed and 28% in the average power along with improved cornering velocity with respect to the vehicle without shifter. The automated shifting mechanism is much more helpful for straight line path as it changes the gears to achieve maximum acceleration in minimal time. This Electro-Pneumatic shifter setup is cost effective and gives an excellent opportunity to have a feel of driving a sports vehicle.

Amidst the fast development road transport infrastructure in nation, the two wheeler population is increasing day by day where the supplies for profitable and economical two wheelers are acquiring high. For the need of better torque and fuel efficiency, gearbox is furnished in the two wheelers. Though the manual gearbox has lot of merits, it also has demerits on complexness of changing the gears with detail to driving necessitate. To avoid the complexness in driving, the continuous varying Transmission are provided in two wheelers, but due to the slip taking place in the belt, the overall efficiency has been decreased. So, in order to reduce complexity of impulsiveness and at the same time providing the better fuel economy, the manual transmission can be machine-driven through electrical aid with the help of electronics. The automation of the existent manual transmission can be made by actuating the clutch, gear shifter lever by acquiring the information from the wheel speed sensor, load sensor, throttle position sensor. The gear shifter and clutch are motivated with the help of stepper motor in a bid to supply better preciseness. Potentiometer is used to alert the throttle position and a load cell is used to sense the load of the driver and pillion. The control system (ARDUINO UNO) acts as a bridge between the sensor and actuator.
