In the past two decades, social media -that area of cyberspace in which people interact, trade ideas and form relationships -has increased exponentially. The potential for professional exploitation of social media networks for advertising, dissemination, and service provision has largely been realized by the parallel development of advanced access devices and bandwidth availability.

Ironically, computers were at the bottom of the list,“handheld devices” and blogs did not make the list, and Twitter had not been invented. Over the past 20 years, technology has steadily advanced from Listservs in the late 1980s and early 1990s to modern technologies such as the World Wide Web, social media, and social networking in the past 15 years. But as McLuhan (1999) pointed out in 1964, and Levinson in 1997, new technologies do not simply replace old ones.

To explain the complexities of social media, this chapter will be divided into five sections: The first section of the chapter will provide some definitions of key social media concepts as well as clarifying what is meant by social media from a public relations standpoint. The second section of the chapter will highlight important social media literature and issues. The third section of the chapter will discuss the direction of social media for public relations scholars. The fourth section of the chapter will describe the possible future of social media for communication professionals. And the fifth section of the chapter will conclude with some observations about new technology.
In an effort to understand the complexities of social media and new technology, three researchers from the University of Oklahoma conducted a Delphi study of 14 technology superstars from 6 nations.
The technological networked environment in developed nations allows for access to information and people in ways previously unknown to mankind. We live in what has been dubbed the social era (Merchant, 2012). Just as the industrial revolution enabled us to view work in new ways, the social media revolution allows us to change how we interact to accomplish workplace goals.
Traditional and industrial media (like newspapers and television) are today more and more excluded as important publishing techniques, while activities have been taken over by social media. Social media is usually understood as media that is designed for social interactions using highly accessible publishing technique. Among the benefits of social media is the inexpensiveness of use and easy access for almost anyone who would like to be a part of the community. This means that people from very different communities are participating and discussing the same topics across a shared medium (wikis, blogs and forums). Topics can very much differ from everyday life up to scientific conferences, project presentations and education. According to the last mentioned it seems that social media is more and more used also for purposes, that have not been expected from the beginning.

The use of social media technologies in organizations has introduced novel ways of collaboration, communication, and knowledge sharing. In this respect, the present study is concerned with examining the use of one type of social media, the wiki technology, by members of several professional communities of practice to collaborate and share knowledge with each other. As such, it seeks to identify and understand the factors that influence their use of the wiki at a large multinational organization. To this end we used an interpretive exploratory case study which included 12 in-depth interviews with senior employees and managers as primary sources of data. Additional data was obtained during two field visits at the organization through observation of the wiki, field notes, and organizational documents. The study concludes with rich insights into the dual impact of the openness of wiki collaboration as well as the manner and value of using the wiki for knowledge collaboration and sharing at the workplace.
