Airborne measurements, obtained during the Asian Aerosol Characterisation Experiment (ACE-Asia), of SO 2 and condensation nuclei (CN) concentrations were made in the local environment of a cumulus cloud band. Conserved quantities, wet equivalent potential temperature θ q , and total water content Q, were used to identify the sources 5 of air detrained on the downwind side of the cumulus band. It was found that ∼65% of the detrained air originated from below cloud base and the remainder was air that had been entrained from the free troposphere upwind of the cloud and subsequently been detrained. Calculation of the sources of the detrained air parcels enabled a prediction of the concentration of SO 2 and CN, assuming that SO 2 and CN experienced 10 no processing within cloud. A comparison of the predicted concentration of SO 2 and CN was made with those observed. The concentration of SO 2 observed was less than predicted and the amount of SO 2 scavenged within cloud was calculated. The CN concentration observed was also less than predicted and, moreover, inclusion of the loss of CN to cloud droplets due to Brownian scavenging resulted in an enhanced decrease 15 of the number concentration of CN predicted. Clear air regions around the cloud exhibited no indication of being a major source of new particles. It was concluded that new particles were formed within cloud.
Due to the growing number of English Language Learners (ELLs) in the US, many states require teachers to take ESL certifications. Even in those states in which ESL certification is not required for teachers, like Texas, many pre-service teachers prefer to take the ESL certification so that they would have better chances of employment in more popular districts. Therefore, many universities offer ESL certification courses for pre-service teachers so that they can qualify to take the ESL certification exam. However, universities have different approaches in training such pre-service teachers. Some only focus on SLA theories but others provide opportunities, e.g., field experiences, for pre-service teachers to observe real ESL classes so that they can see how SLA principles work in practice. Thus, this study tries to provide an overview of such ESL classes designed for pre-service teachers in Texas and discuss the existing challenges as well the possible solutions.

Considers the phenomenon of musicals in Japanese cinema by focusing on the problem of genre, both in terms of the general issue of the structure of genre in the Japanese film industry and the specific problem Japanese musicals have faced in trying to pursue what is often perceived as a Hollywood genre. The paper takes up two examples of the salaryman musical, Harikiri Boy from 1937 and You Can Succeed Too! from 1964, to explore how Japan too could succeed at the film musical.

A fresh translation and in-depth commentary of Leibniz's seminal text, the Monadology. Written in 1714, the Monadology is widely considered to be the classic statement of Leibniz's mature philosophy. In the space of 90 numbered paragraphs, totalling little more than 6000 words, Leibniz outlines - and argues for - the core features of his philosophical system. Although rightly regarded as a masterpiece, it is also a very condensed work that generations of students have struggled to understand. Lloyd Strickland presents a new translation of the Monadology, alongside key parts of the Theodicy, and an in-depth, section-by-section commentary that explains in detail not just what Leibniz is saying in the text but also why he says it. The sharp focus on the various arguments and other justifications Leibniz puts forward makes possible a deeper and more sympathetic understanding of his doctrines.

The Methodus seu ratio compendiaria of Leonhart Fuchs: origins and development of a medical textbook from the sixteenth century Abstract: This paper aims to analyze the development of the medical textbook Metho-dus seu ratio compendiaria written by the German humanist Leonhart Fuchs in the sixteenth century. We study the successive changes to this work that was published first in 1531 under the title Compendiaria, before becoming a sizeable textbook named Institutiones medicinae (Lyon 1555), which continued to be modified until the death of the author in 1566. Fuchs was first and foremost a teacher, and it is because of this that he expanded, changed and corrected his work for thirty-five years. This development is illustrated through a study of the chapter De motu et quiete, dedicated to physical activity and rest, one of the sex res non naturales of the physiological system created by Galen. This paper also reveals the importance of this topic in the Renaissance.
A work in progress, this handlist surveys medieval and early modern texts dealing with dream divination and lunar prognostication in Latin and the European vernaculars in medieval and post-medieval manuscripts, and printed books up to 1600. The texts covered belong to the types of dream divination and lunar prognostication known in the Latin West up to the early modern period, i.e., the so-called Daniel prognostica (the alphabetical dream books and lunaries attributed to the Old Testament prophet Daniel), the thematic oneirocritica of Achmet ben Sirin and Artemidorus, Pascalis Romanus’s Liber thesauri occulti and other reworkings of Daniel prognostica and thematic oneirocritica, and the mantic alphabets attributed to the Old Testament patriarch Joseph. Oneirocritica introduced after 1600 are left out of consideration, as are theoretical and philosophical works on the nature of dreams, such as Girolamo Cardano’s, and medical treatises that use dreams as diagnostic tools.
In recent years some of the most innovative European and American directors have made films that place the spectator in a position of intense discomfort. Systematically manipulating the viewer, sometimes by withholding information, sometimes through shock or seduction, these films have often been criticised as amoral, nihilistic, politically irresponsible or anti-humanistic. But how are these unpleasurable viewing experiences created? What do the directors believe they can achieve via this ‘feel-bad’ experience? How can we situate these films in intellectual history? And why should we watch, study and teach ‘feel-bad’ films? Answering these questions through the analysis of work by directors such as Lars von Trier, Gus Van Sant, Claire Denis, Michael Haneke, Lucille Hadzihalilovic, Brian de Palma, Bruno Dumont and Harmony Korine, The Feel-Bad Film invites readers to consider cinematic art as an experimental activity with ethical norms that are radically different from the ones we would hope to find outside the movie theatre.
