The allocutives in the European Portuguese

Limits and Areas in Dialectology

The allocutives in European Portuguese: from ALPI to CORDIAL-SIN Background The European Portuguese (EP) prescribes two forms of address in plural: vós as the T pronoun and vocês as the generic V allocutive. However, whereas most grammars agree with that description, there are numerous works referring to vós as a rhetorical pronoun only. Furthermore, most methods of Portuguese as a foreign language affirm that vocês is the unique pronoun, both T and V. (Cf. Cintra (1972), Cunha & Cintra (1992) and Brito et al. (2006). In this poster, I have taken into account two dialect corpora: ALPI and CORDIAL-SIN. The Linguistic Atlas of the Iberian Peninsula (ALPI) shows data from dialect informants who were surveyed in the middle 1940’s, and whose spontaneous answers do not support the Standard prescriptions. Besides, CORDIAL-SIN, carried out in the late 1990’s, shows forms of address used by its informants differently from the canonical rules. ALPI ALPI shows that, unlike the grammars descriptions, vós is the T pronoun in the Centre-North and vocês in the Centre-South. Formality is expressed in the Centre-South by the pronoun vossemecês and in the Centre-North, however, there are two V allocutives: vocês and os senhores. CORDIAL-SIN shows that the Centre-Southern dialect has extended northwards. The preference for vocês as the T plural allocutive has widened. Furthermore, as vocês increases in use, vossemecês is also extended in the same areas as the major V pronoun in plural. Vós is progressively lost, favouring vocês as a T form in plural. Vossemecês is definitely being set as the generic V form of address, at least, in orality. Other allocutives as os senhores are going backwards in use. References T V Víctor Lara Bermejo (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) *I decided to chart the major answer in every province.
