The writing process can benefit from applying external representations, such as outlines, or other graphic organizers, such as concept maps. We propose, based on Flower and Hayes’ (1981) writing model, that there is value to instructing students, in the planning stage of writing, in employing concept mapping techniques: to elicit prior knowledge and brainstorm an issue, to organize ideas, and to develop writing plans. We present an intervention study to evaluate these ideas. It appears that concept mapping instruction and application during pre-writing contributed to the accessing and use of prior knowledge for written essays and improved their rhetorical structure in comparison to a control instruction.
Life long learning
Writing a term paper may be daunting for students, be it in primary school, secondary school, undergraduate or even postgraduate level. In this study a group of Masters level students were asked to write a paper on the theme "Quality of Life and Vocational & Technical Education". After completing the paper, the students were asked to construct a concept map based on their term paper and do a reflection paper on how they felt using the concept maps. Results show that most of students recognize that using concept maps helps them to organize their ideas and how the ideas flow from paragraph to paragraph. They also realize that if they have done the concept maps before venturing into writing this paper it would also safe them a lot of time. Concept map thus help students of all ages to facilitate writing.

This study suggests that conceptual summarizing of multiple sources is key to deep learning and useful to language learning strategies. The participants of this study were 68 students from three classes studying in upper intermediate reading course at English Department of State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya in Palembang. The t test indicated that the students who received strategic summarizing intervention in this study received significantly higher marks after eight reading and summarizing measures using computer based concept map. Collected data from questionnaire and focus group discussion showed that during summarizing from multiple sources using computer-based concept map the students employed prereading, conceptual reading and summarizing strategies. We could note the student activities which stressed the various aspects of conceptual learning. It is suggested that conceptual summarizing of multiple sources using computer-based concept map is used in English reading because it all...

Fifty Years of Archaeology in West-central Louisiana: Cultural Resource Investigations on Fort Polk 1972–2022.. , 2023
In compliance with federal laws protecting our country’s heritage, cultural resource investigations have been undertaken in west-central Louisiana on Fort Polk for 50 years, since the early 1970s. A vast program of archaeological survey, excavation, and analysis has occurred, encompassing the examination of over 200,000 acres, and locating over 4,000 sites. Intensive testing has occurred on over 900 of these sites to evaluate their significance for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), with 184 considered Eligible, of which 5 have been subject to large scale data recovery excavations, at 16VN18, 16VN24 (Big Brushy), 16SA50 (Eagle Hill II), 16VN791 and 16VN794. This research is documented in over 250 technical and popular reports and associated collections and records that are maintained on Fort Polk in a state of the art curation facility. This volume provides a synthesis of work, showing how much it has to tell us about Native American settlement in this part of Louisiana, and the connections people here had with groups and settings far beyond the local area. A review of the work that has been undertaken to date is provided, followed by analyses documenting the diagnostic artifacts that have been found and how they have been used to examine patterns of landuse over time, provide measures of site disturbance and integrity, and evaluate the accuracy of the local cultural sequence. Updated guidelines for site assessment and NRHP evaluation are advanced, to facilitate the protection and management of cultural resources moving forward. The cultural resource investigations undertaken on Fort Polk are among the most extensive undertaken anywhere in the United States, and in terms of the amount of survey, testing, evaluation, reporting, and synthetic effort, are as comprehensive as any undertaken anywhere in the world. Cultural resource management investigations, conducted in consultation and collaboration with descendant populations, local communities, and state and federal review and compliance authorities, can lead to a better understanding of and appreciation for the past, and the long term preservation of these resources into the future. This volume provides an updated synthesis of cultural resource investigations through 2022 on Fort Polk, now Fort Johnson, in western Louisiana. The synthesis was completed and released before the installation's name was changed, but that fact is acknowledged in the report dedication, which includes U.S. Army Sergeant William Henry Johnson's Medal of Honor citation. The emphasis in this volume is the archaeological work directed to the First Peoples to use this part of the region. The analyses employ data from thousands of sites, many hundreds of which were intensively tested, to refine the cultural sequence for the area, and better understand past land use practices.
The circle tying the 7 October massacre to the IDF, the Netanyahu government and the ultrareligious radical right is now closing. Hamas awarded this Israeli government a boost it could achieve in no other way demonstrating to Israelis the practicality of becoming the land of Israel for Jews, meaning that the state should strengthen Judaizing for security.
In the areas of the present frontier between Upper Silesia (Górny Śląsk) and Little Poland (Małopolska) in remote geological eras, mainly in the Triassic period, an enrichment of geological layers with metal compounds such as lead and silver ores took place. The emergence of a raw materials base millions of years ago made possible the rapid development of an early medieval district of mining and metallurgy of lead ores, from which admixtures of silver were also retrieved. Even twenty years ago, the frontier areas of Little Poland and Silesia seemed to have little economic importance in the early stage of the existence of the Polish state. Archaeological research changed this opinion radically. The discovery of numerous early medieval settlements indicates that lead was melted and silver was extracted approximately in the areas stretching from Olkusz in the east to Bytom and Tarnowskie Góry in the west, and also in the area around Siewierz, Przeczyce, Jaworzno and Chrzanów. On-going archaeological excavations make our state of knowledge about the past of this area change constantly – new evidence allows for a revision of present theories in the field of Polish medieval and archaeological studies. The debate about the economic bases of the existence of the state of the first Piast rulers has been going on for decades or even longer. Silver played an important role in the formation of the Polish state. It was made into ornaments and first coins. It is also possible that lead shots and strips of silver were used in settling commercial transactions. Where did this metal originate? The answer to this question depends on the present state of our knowledge, that is on progress in archaeological research. Now one has to consider the possibility of acquiring silver not only through import (oriental silver) but also, from a certain point of time, from domestic sources. Thanks to the discovery of the remains of metallurgical furnaces we could increase our knowledge about their appearance. It enabled us to prepare for the first time a more comprehensive typology of this category of archeological finds. The discovery of other metals such as tin or lumps of alloys, brassware and bronze artifacts indicate that apart from metallurgical activities the craftsmen from these settlements also practiced goldsmithery. Apart from steelworks, there also existed goldsmith’s workshops which worked metals such as lead, silver, copper, zinc compounds (zinc ores), and tin. The production of glazed ceramics was an important economic enterprise in the lead smelting sites. The richness of form and ornament of ceramic vessels is unique on the scale of the whole country. “Lead gel – silica recipe”, which was procured on the spot, was used to decorate the sides of the vessels. Lead compounds were used to create multicoloured (mainly green and greenish-olive) ceramic enamels. Much seems to indicate that the vessels produced in the 11th-12th century in the Strzemieszyce-Łosień district and the area around Siewierz spread to large areas of Poland of that time and they constitute a slight part of glazed ceramics in units known from e.g. Kraków, Opole and other major urban centers. It is important to explain the sources of inspiration for such an engaging cultural phenomenon and a new technological skill.
