This article discusses the usage of Bahasa Indonesia (BI) in EFL classrooms of State Polytechnic ... more This article discusses the usage of Bahasa Indonesia (BI) in EFL classrooms of State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya (Polsri). The first objective of this study was to examine the language use in the classroom instruction, in particular, the use code-switching (CS) and code-mixing (CM) and linguistic factors of the utterances as well as the functions of using CS and CM by the lecturers. Another purpose was investigating the subjects' perception on the use of CS and CM. This case study collected data from four lecturers and their students in English Department, Polsri. The analysis of the classroom corpus identified seven communication functions in the lecturers' speeches. The findings of this study also revealed that there were different levels of agreement and disagreement on whether a lecturer should use of CS and CM in the EFL classes. Based on the data collected from the subjects' responses to the questionnaire, this study concluded that CS and CM were aimed at increasing the efficiency of information conveyed. CS and CM are necessary communicative strategies for lecturers to achieve teaching goals, in particular, involving the students who lack English proficiency.

In their summaries our students focused on trivial information, or simply copied entire sentences from the source text and gave their own opinions and experiences in their summaries. Unskilled readers may need instruction and practice in summarizing paragraphs; other readers may need instruction and practice in summarizing larger chunks of information. They need an approach to sort information, and they need to see how skilled readers with sufficient background knowledge identify important information and summarize. The objectives of the study are to identify rhetorical functions in the Introduction Chapter of F... more The objectives of the study are to identify rhetorical functions in the Introduction Chapter of Final Report and to examine whether rhetorical functions utilized by the students of English Department at Sriwijaya State Polytechnic have or have not fulfilled the rhetorical structure proposed in Swales" move model. The corpus was collected through purposive random sampling from a number of final reports written by the students. The study used Swales" move model in analyzing the corpus. The results indicate that, despite similarities with Swales" move model, there are some differences between the students" introductions and the model. It is assumed that the different features of the rhetorical structures are influenced by specific characteristics of the polytechnic final reports and their academic writing capacity. Most of the introductions have not met the criteria or principles as suggested in Swales" move. This study shows that there is a need to teach the principles of scientific writing to the students and increase their awareness of rhetorical structure of academic genre. The study has shown that Swales" model is useful framework in analyzing students" final report introductions, but other studies are necessary to compare and reveal their specific characteristics in different disciplines.

The aim of this study was to examine students’ summarizing strategies in writing summaries from m... more The aim of this study was to examine students’ summarizing strategies in writing summaries from multiple texts. A total of 30 students from the group of high-ability and low-ability based on TOEIC scores were invited to participate in this study for data collection using writing summary task. The participants were taught summary writing using concept mapping strategies. The summarizing strategies of the students were collected through think aloud protocol and questionnaire. This study suggests that explicit instruction in the use of concept mapping strategies during summarizing was crucial to improve the quality of their summaries. This study indicates some differences in the strategies employed by the students of the two different groups. Information about successful strategies employed by high ability students in writing a summary can be used to teach low ability students.
The community service program aimed to investigate the program implementation of Scientific Engli... more The community service program aimed to investigate the program implementation of Scientific English for Preschool on children of two pre-schools. For this purpose, 43 children were purposively selected. This program was developed by a team of English teachers in collaboration with preschool teachers. The teachers were trained on how to teach science through inquiry approach using their first language and foreign language (English). The learning intervention was developed based on theories that assume that children construct knowledge through inquiry process. Data were collected from some classroom observations. Interviews were also conducted to collect data on how the teachers prepared the lesson and taught their students. After the class intervention, students’ post-test scores showed significant increases. The increase in their score average of vocabulary gain suggests that the program was effective in increasing English vocabulary and science knowledge. Furthermore, the classroom...

The participants of this study were 68 students from three classes studying in upper intermediate reading course at English Department of State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya in Palembang. The t test indicated that the students who received strategic summarizing intervention in this study received significantly higher marks after eight reading and summarizing measures using computer based concept map. Collected data from questionnaire and focus group discussion showed that during summarizing from multiple sources using computer-based concept map the students employed prereading, conceptual reading and summarizing strategies.
