Ceftazidime is a broad spectrum third generation cephalosporin antibiotic which is effective mainly against Gram-negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter and Enterobacteriaceae, the pathogens which most often cause ophthalmological infections. Unlike other commonly used beta lactam antibiotics, ceftazidime is resistant to several types of beta lactamases (e.g., TEM, SHV and PSE-1). Because of these advantages, ceftazidime is used in the treatment of eye infections. However, ceftazidime undergoes rapid degradation in aqueous solutions therefore eye drops containing ceftazidime in aqueous solutions are not commercially manufactured. In the present study, liposomal encapsulations of ceftazidime with various lipid compositions, hydrating solutions and pH-values have been studied in order to optimize liposomal composition for a potential eye drop formulation.

Benzophenones from natural sources and those of synthetic analogues present several reports of potent biological properties, and Guttiferone A represents a promising medicinal natural compound with analgesic and gastroprotective profiles. Considering that there are no reports that assess the genetic toxicity of Guttiferone A, the present study was undertaken to investigate the genotoxic potential of this benzophenone isolated from seeds of Garcinia achachairu in terms of DNA damage in different cells of Swiss albino mice using the comet assay, and its clastogenic/aneugenic effects in bone marrow cells in vivo by the micronucleus test. Cytotoxicity was assessed by scoring polychromatic (PCE) and normochromatic (NCE) erythrocytes ratio. Guttiferone A was administered by oral gavage at doses of 15, 30 and 60 mg/kg. The results showed that Guttiferone A produced genotoxic effects in leukocytes, liver, bone marrow, brain and testicle cells and clastogenic/aneugenic effects in bone marrow erythrocytes of mice. The PCE/NCE ratio indicated no cytotoxicity. Since guttiferone A is harmful to the genetic material we suggest caution in its use by humans.

a b s t r a c t Behç et's disease (BD) is a multi-systemic vascular disorder characterized by oral and genital ulcers, as well as cutaneous, ocular, arthritic, vascular, central nervous system and gastrointestinal involvement. It usually affects young adults, and its pathological origin is unknown. The case of a 47-year-old woman with recurrent ulcers in the oral cavity is presented. She linked the pain with sitting and during the sexual act, with vaginal and oral cavity pain, due to the lesions present at those sites, as well as swelling and pain in the knees, making walk painful. The patient was kept under observation and underwent multidisciplinary treatment with prescription of topical and systemic drugs to improve quality of life. Dentists should be aware of BD and the need of multidisciplinary treatment to increase the patient's quality of life.

The Syndrome of Sjögren (SSj) is a chronic systemic illness of auto-immune etiology that affects mainly the exocrine glands, especially salivary and lacrimal. The objective of this case report was to present the importance of the diagnosis of the illness, as well as the recognition and accompaniment of the clinical case relating the systemic alterations to the buccal ones. The clinical condition of the illness and its implications had remained for long periods characterized for phases of increase and remission until the definitive diagnosis of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma resulting in generalized prostration, and death. The multiprofessional relation is important front to the case, which had to the appearance of diverse general and buccal alterations. The options of dental treatment as the lasertherapy, oral health guidelines and control of the signals and symptoms decurrent of the illness become the intervention of the excellent.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of storage of goat ovarian fragments at different temperatures and for different incubation times on the viability and growth of cultured preantral follicles in vitro. Caprine ovaries were collected and divided into 19 fragments, with one fragment being fixed immediately (fresh control). The remaining fragments were placed in minimal essential medium (MEM) and maintained at 4, 20 or 35 • C for 2 or 4 h. After each incubation period, some of the fragments were fixed (non-cultured), whereas others were cultured in vitro for 1 or 7 days. Fragments were processed to enable routine histological and transmission electron microscopic examination. After 7 days of culture, only ovarian fragments stored at 4 • C for 4 h maintained a percentage of morphologically normal follicles similar to that in the fresh control. For all other treatments groups, there was a significant increase in follicular activation observed. In addition, there was an increase in oocyte and follicular diameter after culture of ovarian cortex that had been chilled previously at 4 • C for 2 or 4 h. In conclusion, the present study demonstrated that chilling ovarian fragments at 4 • C during transportation is best for maintaining follicle viability and to increase follicular growth during in vitro culture.

This study evaluates the effects of ascorbic acid and its interaction with follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) on the morphology, activation, and in vitro growth of caprine preantral follicles. Ovarian fragments were cultured for 1, 7, or 14 d in minimum essential medium (MEM) containing ascorbic acid (50 or 100microg/mL), FSH (50ng/mL), or both of these substances. Ovarian tissue that was either fresh (control) or cultured for 1, 7, or 14 d was processed for histological and ultrastructural evaluation. The results showed that after 14 d of culture, medium supplemented with 50microg/mL of ascorbic acid alone or combined with FSH showed higher rates of follicular survival compared with MEM. After 7 d of culture, FSH, ascorbic acid at 50microg/mL with or without FSH, and ascorbic acid at 100microg/mL increased the percentage of follicular activation compared to fresh control. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of fibroblast growth factor-10 (FGF-10) on the survival, activation (transition from primordial to primary follicles), and growth of goat preantral follicles cultured in vitro. Pieces of ovarian cortex were cultured for 1 and 7 d in the absence or presence of FGF-10 (0, 1, 10, 50, 100, and 200 ng/mL). Noncultured and cultured tissues were processed and analyzed by histology, transmission electron microscopy, and viability testing. Results showed that after 7 d, a greater percentage (79.9%) of morphologically normal follicles (containing an oocyte with regular shape and uniform cytoplasm, and organized layers of granulosa cells without a pyknotic nucleus) was observed when cultured with 50 ng/mL of FGF-10 when compared with other concentrations of FGF-10 (0 ng/mL, 67.3%; 1 ng/mL, 68.2%; 10 ng/mL, 63.3%; 100 ng/mL, 64.4%; 200 ng/mL, 52.7%). Ultrastructural analyses and viability testing using fluorescent markers confirmed the follicular integrity of FGF-10 (50 ng/mL)-treated fragments after 7 d of culture. After 7 d, all FGF-10 concentrations reduced the percentage of primordial follicles and increased the percentage of developing follicles. In the presence of 50 ng/mL of FGF-10, follicles increased in diameter after 7 d of culture when compared with other concentrations tested. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that FGF-10 maintains the morphological integrity of goat preantral follicles and stimulates the growth of activated follicles in culture. The culture conditions identified here contribute to the understanding of the factors involved in goat early follicular development.

We investigated the effects of progesterone and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) on survival and growth of caprine preantral follicles. Pieces of ovarian tissue were cultured for 1 or 7 days in minimum essential medium (MEM) alone or containing progesterone (1, 2.5, 5, 10 or 20ng/mL), FSH (50ng/mL) or the interaction between progesterone and FSH. Fresh (non-cultured control) and cultured ovarian tissues were processed for histological and ultrastructural studies. After 7 days the addition of FSH to all progesterone concentrations maintained the percentage of normal follicles similar to fresh control. At day 7 of culture, a higher percentage of developing follicles was observed only in 2.5ng/ml of progesterone associated with FSH or 10ng/ml of progesterone alone when compared with control. The intra-puparial development of the blowflies Cochliomyia macellaria (n = 310) and Lucilia cuprina (n = 470), was studied under controlled conditions in laboratory. The 3rd instar larvae were reared until they stopped feeding, and the pre-pupae were separated according to the size in larval length and degree of pigmentation and of the cuticle. We observe a set of five continuous events or phases: (1) pupariation, (2) larva-pupa apolysis, (3) cryptocephalic pupa, (4) phanerocephalic pupa and (5) pharate adult. The total time of the intra-puparial development, larva-pupa apolysis to pharate adult, lasted for 120 h (5 days) to C. macellaria and 210 h (8.75 days) to L. cuprina.

O alimento corretamente higienizado, manipulado e conservado e imprescindivel para que se consuma um alimento seguro, uma vez que o mesmo pode ser fonte de doencas, causando maleficios a saude do homem. Os objetivos do presente estudo foram verificar na populacao de Assis-SP, os habitos domiciliares de higiene, manipulacao e conservacao com os alimentos, e a utilizacao das boas praticas de higienizacao recomendadas. Foram realizadas entrevistas com 200 mulheres com idade superior a 18 anos, em dois supermercados localizados em bairros distintos da cidade de Assis-SP. Os resultados indicam que, a aquisicao do habito de higiene e conservacao com os alimentos atraves da familia foi de 89 e 60% na populacao A e B, respectivamente, com a televisao 36 e 44% na populacao A e B, respectivamente. Habito de fazer sanitizacao das hortalicas, 36 e 29% na populacao A e B, respectivamente afirmaram ter essa pratica.
