Energy-saving and energy-recovery strategies represent a key factor for reducing operational cost... more Energy-saving and energy-recovery strategies represent a key factor for reducing operational costs within rail systems management tasks; however, by altering service features, they also affect passenger satisfaction. In particular, the paper aims at investigating the effect of the implementation of such measures in the case of limitation in rolling stock availability. More in detail, we analysed the condition in which the planned headway is kept as constant by operating shorter convoys. Clearly, by reducing the length of convoys, a lower amount of power supply is required but, on the other hand, a lower carrying capacity is offered with an increased in passengers’ discomfort. Within this framework, a constrained optimisation problem is formulated and solved in the case of a real regional rail line, thus showing the feasibility of the proposed method.
