The main objective is to explore the perspectives of the former and present staff of NTA as regards the sustainability of the bureaucratic orientation of the NTA management structure in a digital media environment. The theoretical perspective that guides this paper is the bureaucratic and technological determinism theories. The study adopted qualitative research method, with in-depth interviews as means of data collection with snowballing sampling approach which reached saturation with sixteen participants, comprising retired and serving NTA staff in Lagos, Abuja and Ilorin. The paper discovered that NTA is still using the bureaucratic structure even though it is digitizing its operational arrangement. It discovered that the structure of NTA did not anticipate modular nature of digitization because the law governing NTA is obsolete. The paper concludes that the present management structure which was fashioned in the pre digital environment Interrogating the Sustainability of Nigeria Television Management Structure in a Digital Broadcasting Environment Oba, Ibrahim & Rasaq 2 NTA and heavily bureaucratic, and is government control could be antithetical to the workings of digital broadcasting. Majority of the respondents recommends restructuring of the current management structure in line with digital media environment that must encourage viewership through the involvement of social media, youths and timeliness in news broadcast Also that NTA as a content provider needs to redefine its existence by moving from partial commercialization to full commercial venture as a response to emerging trend through conversion of her outpost stations to profitable government ventures.

Though, on the issue of hate speech the provisions of Nigeria Constitution, Nigeria Electoral Act and Journalism Ethic Code are clear but the question is where to draw the line between political statement, hate speech and the responsibility of the media. Therefore, this research sought to establish through a Critical Discourse Analysis approach the pervading of hate speech in Nigeria particularly in Nigeria‘s 2015 general election which has become possible helix of violence. Based on the discourse, it is clear that hate speech was the focal point and the instrument of campaign. Therefore, the parade of hate speeches in several newspapers analyzed showed that media was used by politicians to stoke up hatred and stimulate violence among ethnic an...

The aim is to ascertain the performance of PLS in measuring latent constructs (unobserved) and the manifest (observed) indicators in communication and media studies. Communication studies like other fields often involve the modeling of constructs relationships which requires higher level of analysis. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the potentials of Partial Least Squares PLS approach to estimating the reliability and validity of measurements items and their latent constructs in a communication model. The motivation for the study was the observation that there is inconsistent application of PLS SEM in communication studies leading to low appreciation of its potentials in the field of communication and behavioral areas. This study collected data from youth in both rural and urban areas of Kwara State Nigeria for the purpose of testing the relationship of media literacy competence to the use of new media for civic engagement. The results of the analysis through partial least squares PLS-SEM indicate that there is significant relationship between media literacy competencies and use of new media for civic engagement. The significant path analysis shows that ability to own or have access to gadgets and the possession of media skills have strong relationship with use of new media for civic engagement. Similar results were obtained for the media literacy competence of critical understanding and communication competences of the youths. Therefore, the outcome provides support for the t...

This study took advantage of establishment of Kakaki Radio in Ondo West Local Government Areas of Ondo State in Nigeria to gather data among the populace. Adopting the quantitative design and the survey method, it gathered data relevant to measuring the influence of community radio programmes on political political participation. The study populations are the Ondo West local Government Areas of Ondo state in Nigeria. According to the record obtained from Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), there are about 172,815 registered voters in Ondo West Local Government. Using the krejcie and Morgan (1970), formula, a sample size of 400 respondents were drawn from the population. The sampling technique used is the multistage, probability sampling procedure. The findings revealed that Kakaki community radio programmes increases their level of political participation through, news, current affairs, commentaries, and phone- in programmes.. There is also connection between frequency of listening to Kakaki community radio programmes and the level of political political participation among residents of Ondo West Local Government Area. Alongside this is also the observation that the youths are not using the new media to engage important issues in society. These raise issues about the media literacy competence of the youths and their civic engagement obligations. Therefore this study investigated media literacy competence among youths and the use of new media in four types of online civic engagement. Cognitive theory of Media Literacy and the Model of Engaged Citizenship served as underpinning theories for the study. The study is a cross sectional survey with systematic sampling of 503 youths in rural and urban areas of Kwara State, Nigeria. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling. The results indicated low level of critical understanding among youths which explains why the youths are exposed to risk in online environment. The study found significant use of new media for civic en...

Survey as a form of descriptive research was used for the systematic collection of information on newspaper use and information technology revolution from staff and students in the University of Ilorin and Federal Polytechnic Offa, through questionnaire. The findings show that audience exposure to media (newspaper, radio, television and Internet) varies considerably across specific demographics and it can be decisively said that the Internet which houses online newspaper is a major predictor of the dwindling print media readership in Nigeria.

broadcasting stations but more so for the Nigerian Television Authority. Prior to digitization NTAoperates on the principles
of general programming against the specialized programming fosters by digital broadcasting. Also, digitization places
networking on signal distributor with the responsibility for transmission and not on broadcasters like NTA, who should
provide only contents. The study utilized qualitative research method, with in-depth interviews as instrument to investigate
the extent to which the present management may impede or facilitate effective and efficient programming in the context of
digitization. The theory that guides the study is the ContingencyApproach to management. The findings of the study indicate
the need for NTAto re-examine its programming approach. The findings led to the conclusion that NTAas a content provider
needs to adapt its operational and management structure in line with the concept of specialized broadcasting by moderating
its general programming template, which should make contents available on all platforms. The study recommended
restructuring that must encourage viewership through the involvement of social media, youths and timeliness in news
broadcast.

Hence, it is recommended that media outfits should always examine politicians' messages and evaluate their words, scrutinize their facts and claims, and judge carefully the intention and likely impact on the society to prevent being an accomplice in hate speech.

Abstract Many homes in this new media environment bear enormous task of maintaining a media rich home that bring opportunities for younger ones and weaning the young ones from excessive mediatisation of their lives. In response, media scholars have developed Parental Mediation strategies as possible and effective response to the situation. However, empirical studies that focus on the level of adoption of these strategies can hardly be encountered in communication and media literature in Nigeria. This study, therefore, resort to a representative sample of 369 drawn from the population of Ilorin metropolis, being the state capital of Kwara State.

The objective of the study is to appraise the effectiveness of the strategies among rural dwellers of Kwara state. It investigates how the federal government used its communication plan to push for policy adoption among rural farmers. The populations of interest are rural areas of the Kwara South. The specific objectives were to: (i) measure the level of awareness of the programme; (ii) examine the channels of awareness of Federal Government's Agricultural Promotion; and (iii) determine the level of adoption of Agricultural Promotion Policy messages among the rural farmers in Kwara South. Quantitative research design with the survey method was adopted for this study. A Sample size of 384 was drawn from Kwara South, with a population of 706,848, using both stratified and systematic sampling approach. The study was guided by four research questions and four hypotheses. The analysis of the results using both descriptive and inferential statistics indicates high level of awareness of the Federal Government's Agricultural Promotion Policy programme among rural farmers but the communication strategies face challenges in adoption of the messages. This points to a number of issues bordering on effectiveness of message strategies and complexity in message contents (i.e. required efforts to implement the contents). These findings led to the recommendation of the need to deepen the involvement of interpersonal channels in the communication strategies such as the extension services in rural areas.
