Michail Bacthin's studies have not only established the field of research of the Carnival and... more Michail Bacthin's studies have not only established the field of research of the Carnival and the carnivalesque, but have also consistently connected it to various disciplines through linguistic, literary, anthropological and sociological approaches. Their reception therefore concerns very different areas of research and has been proved very fruitful in recent decades. This contribution offers a critical overview of some of the studies on the topic of Carnival and the attempts to distinguish its conceptualisation from related terminology. In particular, I highlight a differentiation between two competing aspects in the interpretation of this phenomenon, namely the ritual inversion, and the subversive discourses that can be addressed in the context of Carnival.

«Se tu leggi sempre così». Gli esordi di Gadda come critico letterario

The correspondences of Carlo Emilio Gadda with his first Florentine publishers ‒ which have been ... more The correspondences of Carlo Emilio Gadda with his first Florentine publishers ‒ which have been edited and commented in my PhD thesis ‒ reveal some important contextual and topical elements for the understanding of his early production. In particular, his activity as a literary critic in the years between the two world wars gains a new significance and a new place through these correspondences. This article presents Gadda’s critical writings and reviews, some of them published in journals or in the collection I viaggi la morte and others unpublished. For classical writers and for his contemporaries Gadda offers very personal and intertextual interpretations which will also characterise famous novels and essays of the 1960s. To this extent, this article focuses on texts and witnesses of his experiences in the frame of the journals «Solaria» and «Letteratura» and suggests some examples of how his way of writing derives from his readings.

Florence as the Capital of Poverty and Abundance in Antonio Pucci’s "Proprietà di Mercato Vecchio"

Antonio Pucci's poem "Proprietà di Mercato Vecchio" (c. 1380) connects to the topic of the worksh... more Antonio Pucci's poem "Proprietà di Mercato Vecchio" (c. 1380) connects to the topic of the workshop “Fat Worlds“ in various ways. It follows the events of the mercato over the course of a year, with all their seasonal changes. Florence, the city of stone, transforms into a heavenly garden with countless agricultural products, tools and services. But the poem is not a mere listing of goods and the merchants’ wealth of the city of Florence: The market quickly becomes an exuberant fair with a close-up on the dramatically different social realities of the Florentine people.
