Very early the providencial arrival of this personage was related to the religions of salvation that were developing in every part of the hellenized Orient. In this cultural and religious context, early Christians appropiated the word and applied it in the very first testimonies still with the usual sense in Hellenistic period, but very quickly they give it a "technical" meaning: it will refers properly to the arrival of Jesus in an eschatological moment of doubtful temporal concreteness. A study of the evolution of the term, with its antecedents and the extension of the meaning originally attributed in the Pauline Epistles, will be the objective of this article.

This paper tries to provide evidence for the textual origin of this expression, basing on the different studies and interpretations over its occurrences on the Book of Daniel, the Septuagint, some of the so-called Apocrypha and the New Testament. The authors of the Gospels, who wrote in Greek and knew well the Book of Daniel, directly connected an apocalyptic and messianic message, as put forward in Daniel 7:13, with its Aramaic trivial use as an auto-referential designation. Thus, they gave room to a new interpretation of the «Son of Man» expression as a salvific and messianic title.

The following hypotheses are formulated: Three main lines converge in the text: An apocalyptic literary tradition that develops strongly in the Jewish sphere since the wars of the Maccabees; a Hellenized component that is reflected in the language in which the text is composed and in the handling of the Greek vision of the Iranian religion; and a Zoroastrian literary tradition that can be demonstrated from the comparison with a text such as the Yašt 19, composed during the Achaemenid period, and with other Greek texts documenting what could be the religious tradition of the magicians before the Sasanid period. The text has been composed by a Hellenized Jew who sees the Iranian kings as saviors in the face of Roman oppression and who knows the literary traditions of both Jewish and Iranian literatures.
