And Then the Family Retirement Celebration!

I'd insisted a while ago that Art and I wanted to have a family celebration for my baby brother, Dennis who had retired after 33 years. This was decided before he'd been feted by the police station where he worked and a wonderful group of his close friends who also surprised him with a party.

We went to the Rinka restaurant since my nephew had given us a generous gift certificate to that restaurant for Christmas.

Rinka is a very authentic Japanese restaurant. Service was excellent and the ambience lovely. Notice this rock garden is created with rocks in the shape of the Hawaiian island chain.

We all enjoyed the food there and everyone had a great time.

We gave Dennis a retirement t-shirt and mug.

And then we discovered that my sister-in-law, Nancy had also given him a mug and several t-shirts. It's amazing that we didn't buy the same one.

Well... I must say, Dennis should consider himself thoroughly retired now.

  7. The food looks wonderful, and the T-shirts are cute. Nice looong photo of everyone, too. (My older brother's blood pressure dropped to a safer zone after he retired; said he should have retired sooner.) Hope everyone can have fun after his hard work for so many years. Linda in Kansas

    1. I imagine Dennis might be stressed less although he's still getting calls for help from the police station.

  9. 1. Onion rings, Western style ? That suggests they had a pit for your legs to dangle under that table.
    2. When my Dad retired, Eastman Kodak in Rochester had a meeting for the wives. The company "expert" told them, "Up to now you have had too much money and not enough husband. From now on you are going to have not enough money and too much husband." Mom thought his comment was a riot.

    1. We weren't in the room with a pit. We had Western style seating. I was rather surprised at the onion rings too.

When Art retired, he joined me in my classroom for a couple of hours, twice a week to work with my students' writings. We were the Mom and Pop classroom with parents loved. My students really enjoyed the one on one attention he could give them too. I think he might have been a little sad when I retired although then we could travel more easily.

    2. Fantastic. I was a teacher for over forty years, and I know you were a great teacher, unusually so, actually. Having Art join you was a stroke of genius--on both your parts! As I have commented before, my first grade teacher was named Miss ANGEL--and she was an angel in my eyes. I was off to a good start and always liked school.

  10. Those are great t-shirts. I would wear a couple of them, but after ten years in retirement, it doesn't seem appropriate. :-)

  14. Dennis should feel fully celebrated by now, and certainly retired, with all of those shirts to remind him!
