Upstairs Battle

The house renovation continues!

Art is working on putting down the Wilsonart wood laminates on the steps now.

My mom just couldn't stand having "untidy, dirty looking bare stairs which she couldn't mop for two years so while we were in Illinois, she got my brother to paint the steps. At the time we thought it was awfully nice of him to do this for her so she wouldn't have to look at unfinished wood. (Yes, yes, now you know. She is a bit obsessive compulsive when it comes to cleanliness.)
However...
Art just discovered that the Wilsonart steps have to be glued onto the BARE wood! Sigh...
One step forward, two steps back! We've had to find the best way to remove the paint. We didn't want to use a stripper so Art ended up getting a couple of different kinds of grinders to remove the paint so that the glue could adhere to the wood surface.

He's just finished gluing down 4 steps and we're liking the looks of it. (Not to worry. The screw holes will be patched and painted later.)

Four down, 18 more steps to go!

  2. I love the header. As you know I am very familiar with remodel hell. What's nice now is that we hire it out now. I used to run for the hills when my electrician husband used to try his hand at plumbing...

  6. Such a pretty photo for your header.

What an undertaking Art has with the steps project. You are very lucky to have such a handy husband. Won't you enjoy your living quarters in the future....knowing all is ship-shape :)

  7. It's all a long process. You just have to take it one step at a time.
    (sorry, I couldn't resist)

  8. I thought of installing a wooden floor, but David insisted that it would be hard on his flat foot. So we opted for carpet with a thick pad.

Love the look of wood, though!

  9. Isn't it so often the way - finishing a DIY job takes twice as long as it should because of all the extra jobs that get thrown up along the way. The stairs look great though, well done Art.

  13. Wow, the steps are going to be beautiful. Congratulations to both of you, getting another project finished.

The header photo is a stunner--I'm glad you made it so big; I love it! When we lived in Maryland for a few years, we never missed the Cherry Tree Blossom Festival in DC, and every year since I remember it.

  14. Thank you everybody! After seeing everybody else's beautiful remodeling of their blogs, I got a touch of spring fever and decided to try something else for my blog. I can't get the picture to fit better, though. I don't know how to reduce the photo. When I used the button for Reduce to Fit it just cut the photo in half. Sigh... Will play around with it more later.

  15. Hi Kay! I love your new header photo. Very spring.
Art is doing a good job on the steps. They are very beautiful. You had asked if I had dancing shoes for line dance class. I don't. I just wear sneakers. They are a few in class that do though. Lisa
