God, the human being and the world in the pictorial language of the heart religion: codes and challenges

Abstract
The religion of the heart, also called in popular terms cordial religion, is a vital expression of Brazilian religiosity. The article explores its imagetic codes used by some of its expressions during 500 years to direct the relationships between the human being and God, and between the human being and the world. The investigation is developed in an ecumenical perspective, considering Catholic, Lutheran, Puritan, Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist and Pentecostal authors or editors, and formulates the hypothesis that the religion of the heart is a helpful issue to understand better the trans-confessional connections between distinct confessions and denominations, phenomenon that a comparison of doctrines does not explain. Nevertheless, religion of the heart itself is since medieval times up to “post”-modernity part of a dynamic and continuing process of signification and resignification. This process of signification and resignification used the former cods, dialog with contemporanity and makes visible ecclesiastical projects.

Resumo
A religião do coração, popularmente designada também como religião cordial, é uma expressão vital da religiosidade brasileira. O artigo explora os códigos imagéticos usados por algumas das suas diversas vertentes no decorrer de 500 anos para direcionar os relacionamentos entre o ser humano e Deus, e o ser humano e o mundo. A investigação é feita numa perspectiva ecumênica sobre consideração de autores e editorações católicos, luteranos, puritanos, anglicanos, presbiterianos, metodistas, batistas e pentecostais. Levanta-se a hipótese de que a investigação da religião do coração no Brasil seja uma possível ferramenta para entender melhor a conexão transconfessional de vertentes parecidas em denominações distintas, fenômeno que a comparação doutrinária não explica. Mesmo assim, não se perde de vista que a própria religião do coração faz parte de um processo dinâmico e contínuo de significação e ressignificação, desde a época medieval, até a “pós”- modernidade. Esta significação e ressignificação apropriam-se dos códigos anteriores, dialogam com seu cotidiano e deixam transparecer projetos eclesiásticos.

Abstract
Every church´s concept of salvation, the relation between God, the human
being, and the world, its possible transformation or the extent of it
is build upon its doctrine. This article investigates the construction of the
imaginary of the booklet The book of the heart, its use of the imagetic or emblematic discourse of the Counter-Reformation and its reproduction by Presbyterian, Methodist, Pentecostal and Baptist editors. The article comes to the conclusion that the imaginary of this publication is more transconfessional than is normally assumed.

A concepção de cada igreja da salvação, das relações entre Deus, o ser humano e o mundo, e das possíveis transformações ou de seu grau, é construída, normalmente, com base em sua respectiva doutrina. Entretanto, a doutrina não é a única fornecedora de sentido religioso. Este artigo investiga a construção do imaginário em O livrinho do coração, o seu aproveitamento do discurso imagético ou emblemático da contrarreforma e sua reprodução por editoras presbiterianas, metodistas, pentecostais e batistas. Levanta-se a tese de que o imaginário dessa publicação é mais transconfessional
do que se assume.

Gender studies and theological method: corporeity [body] and androcentrism as permanent subjects of the Brazilian Wesleyan Quadrilateral

Abstract
The present paper discusses the potential of the Brazilian Wesleyan Quadrilateral
theological method in relation to gender studies, under special consideration of the
creation category. With its integration in the 1980s, the Brazilian Wesleyan quadrilateral became a tool to overcome androcentric theologies and to develop a hermeneutics that understands corporeity as a permanent theological category.

O artigo discute o potencial do método teológico chamado quadrilátero wesleyano brasileiro em relação ao método do estudo do gênero, sob consideração especial da categoria da criação. Title: Divine parentality and pastoral practice: human beings before God, the pastoral ministry as female and male, and the Church considering contemporary family

Abstract
Abstract: The description of the “fi rst” person of the Trinity as “parent” is an old English metaphor used until today. The article discusses the metaphor and unfolds its potential discussing the relationship between the human being and God parent, reflecting on clichés concerning the pastoral ministry as female and male and concerning the family in its diversity in the 21st century.

THE USE OF THE TERMS “SECT” AND “SECTARIAN” IN THE Aurélio DICTIONARY: AN INVESTIGATION OF CONFESSIONAL TENDENCY

Abstract
This paper investigates the confessional perspective (in the Christian sense) of the Aurélio Dictionary, first published in 1975 (FERREIRA, 1975), and since 1999 as New Aurélio (FERREIRA, 1999). For this, we analyze the entries on the main Christian denominations and on issues they have in common. We conclude that the dictionary not only favors essentially Catholic perspectives, but among those these common before the VaticanII, both by its description and subsequent classification of almost all non-Catholic denominations as sects or sectarian and by omitting, alongside the Catholic meaning, the Protestant understanding of terms. It is suggested a revision, perhaps in consultation or involvement of ecumenical organizations including representatives of Pentecostal Churches. By this the dictionary may represent even better the richness of the Brazilian language, written and spoken, and also enable greater identification of a significant portion of the population with one of the most important records of its language.

Neste artigo, investiga-se a perspectiva confessional, no sentido cristão, do Dicionário Aurélio, publicado pela primeira vez em 1975 (FERREIRA, 1975) e, a partir de 1999, como Novo Aurélio (FERREIRA, 1999). Para isso, analisam-se verbetes sobre as principais confissões cristãs e sobre temas que elas têm em comum. Conclui-se que o dicionário não somente favorece perspectivas essencialmente católicas, mas também comuns antes do Vaticano II, tanto pela descrição e consequente classificação de quase todas as confissões cristãs não católicas, como “seitas” ou “sectárias”, quanto por seu silêncio em relação ao significado protestante de palavras acompanhando a compreensão católica. Sugere-se uma revisão, talvez sob consulta ou envolvimento de órgãos ecumênicos, com a inclusão de representantes pentecostais, para que o dicionário possa representar melhor a riqueza de significados da língua falada e escrita no Brasil e possibilitar maior identificação de uma parcela significativa da população brasileira com um dos registros mais importantes de sua língua.

John Wesley’s medical guide Primitive Physic[k] from 1747: science,
charlatanism or social medicine?

Abstract
In 1747, John Wesley, spiritus rector of the Methodist movement, published the first edition of his medical guide Primitive Physic[k]. What was its purpose in a world where the Royal Academy, herbalists, healers, exorcists and quacks competed for the attention of the population? The article introduces the different groups who promoted or pretended to promote health in 18th century England and compares the contents of the guide Primitive Physic[k] with their proposals and therapeutic strategies. The conclusion is that a significant portion of the guide consists of guidelines of the Royal Academy of Medicine, but that it always favors homemade remedies with ingredients available to humbler classes. In relation to the so called Spiritual Physick, prayer is mentioned as a complementary measure, but the practice of exorcism is totally ignored.

Em 1747, John Wesley, spiritus rector do movimento metodista, publicou a primeira edição do seu guia medicinal Primitive Physic[k]. Qual era o seu propósito num mundo onde a academia real, herbalistas, curandeiros/as, exorcistas e charlatães competiam pela atenção da população? O artigo apresenta os diferentes grupos que atuaram, ou pretendiam atuar, em prol da saúde na Inglaterra do século 18, e compara o conteúdo do guia Primitive Physic[k] com suas propostas e estratégias terapêuticas. Conclua-se que uma parte significativa do guia é composta por orientações da academia real de medicina, mas que sempre se favorecem remédios caseiros, com ingredientes acessíveis para as classes mais humildes. Quanto à chamada Spiritual Physick, menciona-se a oração como medida complementar, mas ignora-se plenamente a prática do exorcismo.

The origins of the emblem book The human heart by Johannes Evangelista Gossner: continuity and new readings of the religio cordis between the 16th and 19th century

Abstract
This paper investigates the textual and pictorial sources of the book The human heart (1812) by Johannes Evangelista Gossner. He shows how the iconography of the German Gossner depends on Flemish and especially French iconographies, in its more pessimistic view of the world and without the lightness of the Baroque and Rococo religio cordis. Face to face with revolutionary movements and the Napoleonic Wars we see a version of the religio cordis as withdrawal with personal internal piety, consciously disconnected from the distrusted world.

Este artigo investiga as fontes textuais e imagéticas do livro O coração do ser humano (1812), de Johannes Evangelista Gossner. Ele mostra como o alemão Goss-ner depende de iconografias fla-mengas e, especialmente, france-sas, em sua visão do mundo mais pessimista e sem a leveza da religio cordis do barroco e rococó. Face a face aos movimentos revolucioná-rios e as guerras napoleônicas, apresenta-se uma versão da religio cordis como recuo ao cuidado com o interior pessoal, conscientemen-te desconectado do mundo e des-confiando do mundo.

The translation of the Catholic book The human heart by
J. E. Gossner (1812) by the Presbyterian A. Jensen (1914): the
promotion of a Catholic imaginary or its Protestant review?

Abstract
This paper interprets The heart of man, written by J. E. Gossner in 1822, from its Catholic background and compares the result with its translation into Portuguese, produced in 1914 by André Jensen, a Brazilian Presbyterian. To achieve this, we study the iconography of its ten emblems and the iconology of its accompanying texts. We conclude that Jensen believed the contents of the original version were generally consistent with
his understanding of the Presbyterian tradition. He subtly presents Calvin as the representative of the religio cordis and discreetly omits non-Presbyterian concepts, such as
the Catholic zuvorkommende Gnade (prevenient grace). Moreover, Jensen reorganizes the sequence of emblems according to the late Protestant scheme of the “broad and narrow
way”, which, in fact, reaffirms only a central aspect of the book’s original message, its unilateral negative understanding of the world as seductive or oppressive. Thus, even the
introduction of freedom in place of generosity, that is, of a distinct Protestant concept, did not contribute to the creation of a more Protestant rereading. There is a prevailing dichotomous imaginary of a battle between God and the devil in and by the human

Gossner (1812) por el presbiteriano A. Jensen (1914): promoción
de un imaginario popular católico o relectura protestante?

Resumen
En el documento se interpreta el libro Das Herz des Menschen [El corazón humano], de J. E. Gossner de 1822, desde su base católica y compara el resultado con su traducción
al portugués, realizada en 1914 por el brasileño presbiteriano André Jensen. Para ello, se estudia la iconografía de sus diez emblemas y la iconología de los textos adjuntos. Llegamos a la conclusión de que Jensen cree que el contenido de la versión original en general es de acuerdo con su comprensión de la tradición presbiteriana. Para ello, presenta sutilmente Calvin como representante de la religio cordis, y omite discretamente conceptos no presbiterianos, como el católico zuvorkommende Gnade (la gracia proveniente). Además Jensen reorganiza la secuencia de los emblemas de acuerdo con el esquema del “camino ancho y el camino angosto” del protestantismo tardío que, en realidad, sólo reafirma un aspecto central del mensaje original: su lectura unilateralmente negativa del mundo como seductor o acosador. Por lo tanto, hasta la introducción de la libertad en lugar de la generosidad, o sea, un concepto distinto del protestantismo, no contribuye a una relectura protestante. Predomina un imaginario dicotómico de una batalla entre Dios y el diablo, en y por lo corazón humano, con el único objetivo de lograr una muerte santa, sin ninguna pretensión de transformar el mundo.

The article compares William Hogarth's Gin Lane and Beer Street with texts by his contemporary John Wesley, spiritus rector of the Methodist movement. Although Hogarth had portrayed the Methodist religious movement in some of his prints as dangerously enthusiastic, both men defended a similar agenda concerning alcohol consumption. The similarities in their two ways of understanding the issue can be explained by culturally established customs, while distinct social outlooks can account for their differences.

O artigo apresenta diversos modelos da espiritualidade cristã, distinguindo neles  formas de um conceito central ou de modelos binários ou tríplices. Apresenta-se  a hipótese de que o último tipo seja uma forma interessante para descrever e  analisar o campo da espiritualidade cristã no Brasil. Na base de uma releitura de  Kierkegaard, favorece-se a distinção entre os aspectos místico, ético e estético  da espiritualidade cristã; analisa-se a tendência dos adeptos de cada acento de  transformá-lo em um sistema fechado e defende-se a necessidade de uma visão
complementar dos mesmos.

Abstract
The paper presents various models of Christian spirituality, distinguishes between  them singular, binarian and triple concepts and argues that the latter type would  be better able to understand the current tensions and dynamics in the field of  Christian spirituality in Brazil. On the basis of a rereading of Kierkegaard, favors  a distinction between the mystical, ethical and aesthetic aspects of Christian  spirituality, analyzes the trend of the supporters of each accent to transform it  into a closed system and defends the need for a complementary view thereof.

"Since 1888—with an interruption be tween 1898 and 1910—the Brazilian Portuguese translation of the description of the work of Christ in the second Article of Religion has not been “to reconcile his Father to us,” as has consistently been the case in all the branches of American Methodism, but rather “to reconcile us to his Father”—“para nos reconciliar com seu Pai.” This article documents this extraordinary difference from its origin and discusses its impact during several moments of Methodist missionary work in Brazil as well as in the autonomous Methodist Church in Brazil (Igreja Metodista em Brasil, 1930–1974; Igreja Metodista [Brazil], 1974–present), the Portuguese Evangelical Methodist Church (Igreja Evangélica Metodista Portuguesa), and the Lusophone annual conferences of The United Methodist Church in Angola and Mozambique. A parallel phenomenon that occurred in the Spanish missions of the MECS between 1891 and 1930, but never in the Spanish missions of the MEC, is also explored."

The heart as hagiographic attribute of Saint Benedict of the Rosary: hypothesis on its origin and its underpinned understanding of Christian life.

Resumo
Neste artigo, investiga-se uma variação incomum dos atributos hagiográficos clássicos de São Benedito: o São Benedito do Rosário com coração. Procura-se explicar tanto a relativa raridade de figuras com esse atributo adicional como a sua existência. Para isso, discutem-se a história das representações de São Benedito, função e exemplos da religio cordis no Brasil colonial e as características das irmandades e confrarias que veneravam São Benedito. Defende-se que as atribuições hagiográficas alternativas de São Benedito representam ênfases da fé cristã distintas com mais ou menos proximidade ao projeto da religião colonial. Conclui-se que as confrarias dos “homens ‘pretos’” não usaram preferencialmente a figura de Benedito com o Menino Jesus, mas as representações do Benedito do Rosário. Dessa forma, não enfatizaram na experiência da “união mística” como expressão máxima e propósito predileto da sua fé, mas no modelo da partilha solidária, segundo o qual a proximidade de Deus passa pela aproximação aos/às mais necessitados/as. Interpretamos o atributo do coração não como retorno para o discurso dominante da religio cordis do catolicismo colonial, mas como uma releitura crítica do discurso oficial pelas confrarias e irmandades.

Abstract
This paper investigates an unusual variation of the classic hagiographic attributes of St. Benedict: St. Benedict of the Rosary with heart. The article tries to explain both the relative rarity of this additional attribute as its existence. The history of representations of St. Benedict is discussed and examples are given for the role and characteristics of the religio cordis for colonial Brazil within the fraternities and sororities that venerated St. Benedict. It is argued that the alternative hagiographic attributes of St. Benedict represent different emphases of the Christian faith in more or less proximity to the colonial project of religion. It is concluded that the confraternities of “‘black’ people” preferably did not use the figure of Benedict with the Jesus as a child, but the representations of Benedict of the Rosary. Thus not the experience of mystical union is emphasized as the center of their faith, but the model of shared solidarity, according to which the nearness of God is related to the proximity to those in need. We do not interpret the attribute of the heart as a return to the dominant discourse of the religio cordis of colonial Catholicism but as a critical rereading of the official discourse by the fraternities and sororities.

Em 2007, faz 90 anos que faleceu Walter Rauschenbusch. Seus livros foram lidos no Brasil nas décadas de 20 e 30, como nas de 50 e 60, com reflexos ainda nas décadas de 70 e 80. 1 Rubem Alves chamou o movimento ao qual Rauschenbusch pertencia, o Evangelho Social, o legítimo precursor precoce da Teologia da Libertação 2 e, assim nós acreditamos, também do Evangelho Integral.

Quando surgiu a intenção de escrever sobre o Credo Social (em seguida CS) 2 , tínhamos primeiro em mente o centenário da sua primeira versão "estadunidense" em 2008. Na elaboração do texto deparamo-nos com a crescente emancipação das edições brasileiras das edições norte-americanas. Mudamos, então, o nosso foco inicial: em vez de contar a história do CS universal, onde a história brasileira se tornasse uma história local entre outras, optamos por destacar a releitura contínua do CS em solo brasileiro a partir da história nacional e eclesiástica. De lá surgiu o subtítulo, "em busca da formulação do seu papel cidadão". Desde sua criação pela Egreja Metodista Episcopal (em seguida EME), em 1908 3 , e sua adaptação pelo Conselho Federal de Igrejas Cristãs dos Estados Unidos no mesmo ano, até a sua mais recente renovação 4 pelo Conselho Nacional de Igrejas Cristãs dos Estados Unidos 5 e suas 35 igrejas membros 6 em nov. 2007, o CS é nas igrejas estadunidenses e suas antigas missões amado e desconfiado, assumido e esquecido. Em grande parte, são as agências do testemunho social, no caso dos EUA, especialmente a Igreja Presbiteriana 7 e a Igreja Metodista Unida 8 , que valorizam e destacam esta herança. No Brasil, então, o centenário do CS em 2008 e a memória dos 75 anos do primeiro CS brasileiro eram, no sentido restrito, somente assuntos na Igreja Metodista. Num sentido mais amplo, então, observa-se, por exemplo, na IPB um "re-encontro" com a temática pela lembrança dos seus representantes do evangelho social como antecessores do evangelho integral (SOUZA 2005 e MATOS 2008). Diante desse quadro, propomos uma reflexão em três passos. Primeiro, lembramo-nos do panorama maior do CS e olhamos a recepção do Evangelho Social especialmente, por meio das igrejas membros da Confederação Evangélica do Brasil (em seguida: CEB). Depois interpretamos as formas de integração do CS nos Cânones da Igreja Metodista [do Brasil] 9 [em seguida IMdB] como indicador do grau de identificação institucional e eclesiástica com o CS e, finalmente, documentamos e comentamos algumas ênfases de cada edição.
