The authors focus on the GIS based tools created to manage information collected by the different work groups who contributed to the drafting of the Plan. The outcome is an articulated and flexible system which aims to describe the complexity of the schools, as well as to actively involve interested actors in order to share cultural values, operational needs and priorities of intervention. Indeed, the objective of a CMP is to clarify the significance of a place, and define in which ways such significance will be maintained in future transformations. The GIS developed for the National Art Schools enabled to archive, systematize, and analyze data according to the double-scale approach which characterized the entire research (the territorial and the architectural one), thus becoming an essential tool for the implementation of the CMP.

The continuous advancement in technology caused a quick ageing of both survey techniques and their outcomes. This may result into a predetermined expiration date after which they risk losing their quality and usefulness (hence the title «Best Before»). Facing this risk, this paper focuses on the unceasing relevance of past surveys both as a legacy in the history of technique and as a fundamental source of information on heritage buildings, and thus a support to the preservation activity. The present paper offers an overview of the most recent attempts of preserving and keeping in use the paper surveys of the past.

The research herein presented has identified the true structural system of Havana’s National Art Schools, an internationally well-known architectural masterpiece that was recently investigated within the drafting of a comprehensive conservation management plan. This iconic complex was built right after the Castro’s revolution and was meant to embody Cuba’s newfound freedom. To this end, the complex was supposed to be built using Catalan vaulting, a technique loaded with significance due to its provenance, affordability, and flexibility. While most of the literature, the architectural features, and the very designers assert that no concrete nor steel were employed during construction, recent studies suggested that a reinforced concrete core might be hi...

Indeed, over the past few years, the issues addressed by scholars mostly concerned surveying and modelling techniques, whereas the organization of external data within the virtual model has rarely been considered. The necessity of defining a new operative tool for the maintenance of the wooden chain encircling the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore represented an occasion to develop an informative model that attempts to confer centrality to the knowledge processas a whole. Attention was thus focused on the articulation of the informative apparatus to be associated to the 3D model, as well as to its practical implications in terms of conservation.

Architects in Exile. Stories of New Spatial Experiences, 2023
The international conference Architects in Exile: Stories of New Spatial Experiences (Milan, May ... more The international conference Architects in Exile: Stories of New Spatial Experiences (Milan, May 29-30, 2023) aims to explore a research field that has gained attention in recent years within cultural studies but remains unexplored from an architectural perspective: the exiles and migrations that have characterized the 20th century. The valuable studies conducted so far on this topic have mainly focused on the biographical aspects of the individuals involved in these processes and their production, interpreted in a rather narrative sense. Architecture offers new keys for understanding and interpreting the complex phenomenon of ’exile’, taking into account its heterogeneous nature. Through the engagement of scholars whose research has focused on the examined themes from different disciplinary perspectives, the international conference Architects in Exile. Stories of New Spatial Experiences seeks to open new perspectives on the relationship between Exile and Architecture. The conference gathered the contributions of 48 scholars who proposed declinations and interpretations of the phenomena of exiles and exoduses, both collective and individual, imposed and voluntary, defining a new historical atlas for this complex phenomenon. Such topics will be discussed in 10 thematic panels. The opening day of the conference, inaugurated by a lecture by Caroline Maniaque, includes the following sessions: Architecture in Exile: Models and Typologies; Architecture in Exile: Before and in the Era of Nations; Architecture in Exile: the in-Between; Pre-Exile, Exile, Post-Exile, Nomadism. The second day, opened by Alexis Nouss’ talk, discusses the following topics: Exilic Trajectories of the BBPR; Exilic Ramifications of the Bauhaus; Exile and Architectural Hybridations; Exile and Cultural Transfers; Exile and Homeland; Exile and Utopia.
