Block Inspired by Connie @ Freemotion by the River GO! Style

Today Connie that blogs at Freemotion by the River inspired me today to make this little spinning star block.  I just happened to have my Accuquilt kite die (55254) on my desk from playing with scraps in the RSC14 this week.  I combined it with my rectangle die (55159) and made this little 8" block (7.5" finished).  (I tend to stitch a little wider than the standard 1/4" seam on most days.)

I can see I trimmed one side a little short...  This is just a "sample" block for future reference.  It will end up in my red/white/aqua Gypsy Wife style (orphan block) quilt.  I also need to remember that I have to put the print of the fabric on the die right sides up on the kite die to get the spinner star to spin in this direction.  I think it will spin the other way if I put the print side down.
I made this block rather quickly.  Sometimes with the GO! it's easier for me to just grab some scraps from the pile and make a block when I'm inspired rather than to pin it for future reference.  My pin boards are out of control!

Thanks, Connie!!!

Oh, and I also got this a week or so ago

It's still in the plastic package!  I need motivated to start that.  BUT I am staying motivated by using my Fitbit (that I've had for a couple of years).  Looks like Connie and I have quite a bit in common.  If you are interested in a dvd such as this, check out Connie's site and click the link there.  She blogs about it here.  I promise to use my dvd when the weather is bad.  Here in Ohio it's the BEAUTIFUL time of year.  We are having exceptionally great weather (mid 60's) and sunny most days.

I sent Bonnie Hunter a "friend" request to walk with her via Fitbit.  Now I need to look for Connie's contact info so that I can send her a request.  I love "walking" with my quilty friends!

Celtic Solstice Motivation

It's only a matter of time before October is here and Bonnie Hunter announces the colors of the 2014 Mystery quilt.  I decided to dust off my Celtic Solstice BOXES and get busy.  This weekend I finished 62 of Block A:  54-40 or Fight!

I'm so happy that I have learned early to keep projects like this nice and organized with all of the blocks going the same way.  Yes, I know it's fun to lay them all out and look at the progress...  just make sure you put them back nicely.  I don't like to have to rework (iron) disorderly blocks.

**********************************************************************************
For my notes...

For the SMALL quilt, Make 24 blocks.
For the LARGE quilt, Make 60 blocks.

Press  seams AWAY from the star points units and toward the 4 patch units.  Keep all of your oranges in the 4-patches going the same direction!

Now I need to suck it up and make the rest of those bazillion chevron blocks that I need to finish Block B.  Here's what I have now for that...

Then we need to make Block B:  Birthday Girl Block from 100 blocks Vol 2!

For the Small Quilt, Make 25 blocks
For the Large Quilt, Make 61 blocks
Press seams toward the chevron units and away from the split triangle corner units.

RSC14 -- Orange 9.27.14

Say it isn't so?  September is almost done???  Where has this beautiful month gone?

Here's my orange kite girl for September for the RSC14.  She's so bright.

The block is made from 2" squares.  The block pattern can be found at Q is for Quilter blog.

Here she is with all of her friends (January through September).  I'm getting more and more attached to this quilt as the months roll by.  I need to start thinking about sashing.  PLEASE share your ideas!  I'm thinking 2" squares in rainbow colors, but a white square every other?  Hmmmm.  I will wait until I have all the blocks done before I embroidery the flower stems and the kite strings.

This is all thanks to the Rainbow Scrap Challenge, 2014. I'm linking up with Angela at SoScrapy: ScrapHappy blog.

I also played with my Accuquilt GO! Kite die.  I got it new this summer.  It's die #55254.  It makes three pieces for a 4" finished kite block.  I'm playing with ORANGE, grey, black/white, and pinks.

Then I couldn't stop...  With my beautiful, happy orange scraps on the table I just didn't want to put the bag away just yet.  I made this improv log cabin block.  It's about 13" square.  Looks like another rainbow quilt will happen sometime next year.

Just some Accuquilt Broken Dishes

My friend, Julianne, just had to send me a link to the Wishes Quilt Along, from the Fat Quarter Shop's Jolly Jabber.  Although I am not a huge sampler quilt person (for the most part), I LOVED the block Broken Dishes.

I've needed a reason to use my Accuquilt GO! HST 2.5" Finished Square.  I got it new this summer.  It is die # 55257.  I played with a few red/neutral scraps that were left out on the desk from another project.  I quickly (about 30 minutes) made this adorable broken dishes block.

After trimming just a few little snips, my block measures 9.5" (9" finished).  This will make a cute quilt with sashings in probably a 5 x 6 setting.  We'll see.  I'll have to play with some scraps as a leader/ender project in between my churn dash leader/ender project.  LOL.

For my notes, I used the 0.5 seam allowance setting (hit the right arrow twice).  I also set my ruler to the 2.5" line when squaring up the block.  I see this being a long-term thing.  (Just watch, I'll have a cute finished baby quilt in two weeks because these blocks are addicting.)  But it's SUPPOSED to be a leader/ender project in between other quilt blocks...

Fun with Scraps

I'm having fun sorting through scraps for something else and finding more black/white fabrics that I forgot that I had.  Isn't that always fun?  I made more addicting churn dash blocks today.

These little blocks are so addicting! This is the pattern that is free at Jo's Country Junction blog.  It's called Scrumptious Butter Churn.  You can find the pattern here.  The blocks are 7.5".

WIP Wednesday 9.24.14

I'm super excited about getting caught up on project after project.  Here's what happened this week:

I thought I was all caught up on my Quilt Doodle Designs 2014 BOM.  After looking at this picture I can tell that I clearly forgot to put the appliqued blade on each hockey skate.   I also got the toasty mugs done this week.  I love the heart steam on the 4th one.  (Click photo for detail.)  The blades will just take a little bit this week and I'll be able to call it caught up.  But I am loving this scrappy goodness so far.

All of my kite girls for this year is caught up.  I'll finish the orange kite girl this week!  This is one of the blocks that I use for my RSC14.  I'm getting attached to these blocks! The block is made from 2" squares.  The block pattern can be found at Q is for Quilter blog. Here's green:

Kite Girl -- Still playing catch up

Yesterday I had time to make a green kite girl.  Things got a little behind this summer due to having too much summer vacation fun.

The color for August in the RSC14 was green.  Well, I already did a bright green kite girl for March...  I didn't realize that March was regular green, and August was bright green.  (I don't think anybody noticed on my March kite girl.)  It's all about the scraps, anyways.  Anywho...  Here's one more green kite girl:

I love the detail on her green sock!

The block is made from 2" squares.  The block pattern can be found at Q is for Quilter blog.

Scrap Saturday RSC14 -- Orange 9.20.14 FNSI Results

I can't resist a cute churn dash block!  This pattern is available from Jo's Country Junction blog.  It's called Scrumptious Butter Churn.  You can find the pattern here.  The blocks are 7.5".  I thought it would make a great RSC project.  I'll just make a few blocks here and there when I have my scraps for that month pulled out on the desk.

I made a lot of progress on my FNSI!  I got ALL of the orange blocks done,  Whohoo!  I then did some pink and red.  What a fun night.  Here's my progress:

FNSI Plans -- 9.19.14

Follow this link at Sugarlane Quilts to see what the others are doing this month.

It's FRIDAY!!!  Woot woot!  Time to make my plants for the FNSI.  I made a couple of these little churn dash blocks earlier this week for the RSC14 (Rainbow Scrap Challenge) at ScrapHappy blog.

I hope to make six more orange ones for a total of 8 orange ones for this little quilt.  I can't resist a cute churn dash block!  This pattern is available from Jo's Country Junction blog.  It's called Scrumptious Butter Churn.  You can find the pattern here.  The blocks are 7.5".

Thanks for the speed and accuracy to my Accuquilt GO! Baby and dies!

Toasty Mugs Bites the Dust

Another row in the Quilt Doodle Designs 2014 BOM finally bites the dust.  This one is called Toasty Mugs.  I love the way this one turned out.  It's my favorite row so far.  One row of hockey skates and I'm all caught up on this QA.  Whohoo!!!

Isn't it adorable?  I love the mug with the steamy heart!

WIP Wednesday 9.17.14

Things are calming down with school back in session.  I am tackling household projects and getting back into the swing of things in the quilting world.  I only have five more things to do on my TO DO list at the bottom of this page to get caught up with my BOM's!  (I know, two lists are confusing... but that is how I keep organized.)

I'm a little confused why my pictures aren't loading...  I think Blogger changed again while I was sleeping.  It is looking like I can't copy/paste from the past week's blog posts and might have to upload them via Picassa...  Grrrr.

I finished my Born on the 4th quilt -- and found it a new home!  It was in McCall's Quilting, May/June 2014.

I like the motion that the Circle Lord Swirls gave it in the quilting.

I finished another Picadilly Circle block.  This one was orange for the RSC14.

I finished the Evergreen (tree on the right) to complete the row for the Quilt Doodle Designs 2014 BOM.

I also completed the candy row fort he Quilt Doodle Designs 2014 BOM.

My Market Day quilt is headed back to the frame.  I think I am going to quilt it with small (1") cross hatches.  I just can't decide how to quilt it...

Born on the 4th -- A Friday Finish

It's quite fitting that I put the final stitches on this little quilt yesterday, 9/11.  I thought of all of the family that lost loved ones during the whole 9/11 events.

This quilt is Born on the 4th.  It was in McCall's Quilting, May/June 2014.

I like the motion that the Circle Lord Swirls gave it in the quilting.

See that little strip on the very bottom?  That's a mistake!  I knew I didn't have much fabric for the back.  I tried to quilt it by adding "dummy" fabric to the ends and centering it on the longarm.  Well, I missed.  I was going to enter this quit in the county fair, but did not because of that bottom strip.  I could have cut off the border, but I liked it the way the pattern was written.  It will just be part of this quilt's "story".  It will hang on the wall and nobody will see it.  The darker fabric on the top is the hanging sleeve.  It matches the border.  That part was planned.

I'm happy to link up today's finish with Richard and Tanya Quilts for the Link-A-Finish FRIDAY.

I'm also linking up at Quilt Matters.  See all of them here.

WIP Wednesday 9.10.14

I didn't get much accomplished this week.  I did get a big project done when it comes to organization!  I took all of my quilting magazines and books that were about to fall off of the shelves above my desk (and head).  I marked all of the pages with the free Martingale tabs that I got in an e-mail last week ( I love this, Scrap Buster, Make for ________".  I kept out all of my important books and all of my marked magazines.  I now have a 30 gallon tub of books and magazines without any pages marks.  That made a huge space on my shelf for projects.  Believe me, if you've seen my list of WIPS, I need it!  Now I need to move that tub from the floor to storage.  I'll probably have to make a couple of trips because it is so heavy.

My son (7-years old) wants his Mario quilt NOW!  I have decided to stop the Super Mario QA and make it my own.  He only needs a California twin sized quilt.  I am going to use the Mario block that I made and get it done for him.  I have a few ideas in my head.  He doesn't really care about the other characters in the QA right now.  It will be a win-win for us.  This big block was done back in April.  Here's Mario right now:

Although I am having fun playing with orange scraps for the RSC14, I don't have anything ready to show you until Saturday for the RSC14 post.  But just remember that I LOVE orange in quilts!

Here's the Picadilly Circle block that I did this weekend:

I did get one little challenge block done for my local quilt guild.  I need to get that delivered today.  One member provided the background fabric and we were to use one of our ugly fabrics to make this floating churn dash.  I don't really think that this fabric is ugly, but I don't really know what color it is.  Is it blue?  Is it purple?  I don't have much of it, but it was good for this project.

I did can a lot of tomato juice this week.  I just love canning!  If only the magic fairies would clean the kitchen when I was done...

Floating Churn Dash for LQG

Here's the block that I made for our local quilt guild challenge.  Sheila picked out the floating churn dash pattern from Delaware Quilts.  You can find the directions here.  It's a brilliant choice for a group project.  Because the churn dash is floating in the background fabric, it's harder to lose the points.  It's great for all skill levels.

Sheila provided the white background fabric.  Our job was to use one of our ugliest fabrics.  Honestly, I don't think that the fabric that I picked is ugly at all.  But I'm not sure what color it is.  Is it purple?  Is it blue?  I don't have very much of it.  It's a great scrap quilt project fabric.

RSC14 -- ORANGE!!!

I just love ORANGE in quilts!  The good news is that I love it.  The bad news is that I don't have very many large pieces of orange. Here's a sample of some of my tiny orange pieces in this Picadilly Circle block.  Some of the fabrics used I only had enough for one little wedge of orange and it was gone.  But at least I had enough for this one!

I'm linking up with Angela at SoScrapy: ScrapHappy blog. for the the Rainbow Scrap Challenge, 2014.
