Scrappy fabric stars

I decided to make some stars for teachers this year. The tutorial is called Scandinavian Fabric stars but mine are rather scrappy.

I made just one as trial and I got it wrong. My ends were not perfectly hidden but after posting photo on IG I figured it out and made few more.

They are pretty fun but their non matching look makes me a bit nervous. They are not staying so I can handle it for little while :)

I'm also making paper boxes for those and little something out of old calendar.

Once all finished I'm back to my usual rainbow self. I have it all ready to go.

Experiments finished

I can't believe it took me month to bind these two bits. I haven't been much company to any of you lately. I guess I just needed a little break.

Let me tell you some background story for the STAY mug rug. Way back I was inspired by Ruth and this post. I knew I wanted to play with these confetti tiny pieces as well.

At first I ironed those pieces to fusible interfacing. I covered it with sheer fabric and lay piece of fabric on top. Those letters are cut out as you can see it here.

Is it a message or what the heck does the STAY stands for?

I wanted to take a part in New Bloggers blog hop and send out a message to those that are leaving my blog. I know shocking but some followers left and this is a message for them to STAY! I'm kidding but I just wanted to let others know that is perfectly normal that your stats numbers are changing.

Plus the inspiration came from U2 song STAY. I don't have USB slot in my car radio and I'm picking up old CDs I haven't listen to in years. So before you hit that unfollow button remember how Bono sings STAY ... :)

I made the backside during the Selvage along so no wonder selvages are included.

I my second attempt I did not iron those pieces at all. I just lay them down on piece of interfacing covered with sheer fabric and added some zig zag stitch all over. Then I lay the fabric with cut out triangles on top.

You might see the texture in full sun a bit better.

The other side is made out of geese block leftovers. Not sure if to call this a mug rug. Some sort of mini it is I guess. It'll make nice gift to someone. I feel Christmas just behind the corner. Let's link it to Ho, Ho, Ho and on we Sew!

If you are curious about the size. These finished 6x8"and 6.5x8". It is kind of funny that I finished these small scrappy projects prior the original one (quilt and cushions). I just like to play rather than really quilt, lol.

Selvage along - small project

I already finished the easiest and quickest selvage project. Pencil holder and you guessed it. There are more to come :)

I keep my pins in there so this time I have a lid to put on.

I only forgot to match my seams. Nobody is perfect, right.

Do you remember the pile of mess from trimming? Well, I cut it up even more.

I placed organza on top of it and added some zig zag lines. No ironing this time around.

I also stitched together my tiny HSTs. I admit I make projects based on the thread I have in my machine.

They finished 1" and believe it or not I didn't sweat to get such perfect points. I used my 1/4" foot with guide as usual and that's all.

I ironed the squares on interfacing first and used the postage stamp block technique.

Here is how my experiment continued. I cut out three triangles and sewed around them.

I'll add more quilting in but I ran out of white thread in my bobbin and I also have another things to work on. Time to change the thread! :)

Christmas in July

It usually starts with some blog post which includes link to tutorial which you can not resist. Or something that just inspire you and you have the urge to cut into your stash and start chain piecing.

That's how new projects sneaks in. And there is the Christmas thing on top of that. I actually looked up the term Christmas in July on web since we do not have such thing hence we do not celebrate it. July means summer holidays and you just enjoy yourself in general due to sunny weather :)

I do remember some blog hops and challenges called Christmas in July which includes some neat tutorials. You can check some on Forth Worth Fabric Studio blog or some crochet at Red Heart.

You can also join contest of Patience Brewster which is run on IG -  #PBChristmasInJuly
Their unique ornaments are pretty fun too.

Back to my project though. As I sewed those flying geese blocks I also sewed together the cut off corners.

I ended up with 36 pieces in 4 different designs. I used strips from Cherry Christmas jelly roll which are perfect size. My favorite are those hanging socks.

Plus I have 72 tiny HSTs which will end up 1 1/2" once I trim them. I know, that's a bit crazy but isn't Christmas in July crazy as well?

Anyway did you know you can prepare yourself for Christmas the whole year round? I always plan to do but you know how it goes. There is actually linky party with giveaway which runs the second year in the row!

It is called Ho, Ho, Ho and on We Sew and I'm using one of their tutorials and I plan to use some more :) Come join me!

Christmas ball

My December ALYoF goal was this Christmas ball. Tutorial can be found here.

To give you a sense how "big" it is I snapped a pic before ironing the petals. Yeah it is quite small :) Once again I used Cherry Christmas line. Last year I won jelly roll and I just keep on using it. I made quite a few things already.
