Vocal tract area evaluation from MRI data requires a special technique for tooth visualization because of the lack of signal from the teeth as objects consisting of solid calciferous tissue. In this paper, a new method is proposed to capture MR-images of this kind of biological objects and accurately superimpose their outlines onto MR- images of sagittal plane of articulatory tract. Upper and lower incisors' MR-images with the sur- rounding bony structure are obtained by MR-scanning a subject with a contrast medium enveloping teeth's surfaces. As a contrast medium we've used a chewing gum turned out to be an adhesive ma- terial with optimal for MRI special properties. The teeth and adherent bony tissue contours wer...

Implementation of the Viterby algorithm enables creation of automatic dictionary of fragments for use in Example Based Machine Translation (EBMT).

Being estimated as the prominent type of velarized consonants in Russian, these phonemes have been taken as target group in a series of MRI experiments to study palatalisation – velarisation relationship in the Russian phonetic system. An experimental dataset was based upon 2D MR-images, audioand video recordings taken from 2 native speakers of Russian (male and female) producing VCCV sequences (Russian pseudo-words with the second vowel stressed) containing labial consonants in the vocalic contexts [a]_[a], [a]_[e]. The original experimental method of MRI investigation relied on gated and time-related MR-scanning of numerous repetitions of the same speech sequence for further reconstruction of articulatory movement(s) progressing in time being plotted from MR-images across several repetitions within a session. Exper...

The experimental material consisted of Russian words with various types of rhythmical structures and consonantal clusters as syllabified by Chinese learners of Russian. The syllabification patterns of Chinese learners were compared with the syllabification patterns of the same word list produced by native Russian speakers. The principal differences in syllabification behaviour occur in V and CV syllable types. The prevalence of CVsyllables was higher in the Chinese syllabification inventory than in Russian speakers’ data, and vice versa for V-type syllables. Other differences in Chinese learners’ syllabification results included variations in phoneme additions and deletions, as well as modifications of a Russian word’s rhythmical stru...

As the most faithful ‘mirror’ of political, intellectual and spiritual life of a nation during current state and in historical perspective, linguistic corpora could be also applicable as innovative research methodology in wide variety of research projects in Social Sciences and Humanities. Some valuable examples are presented.

These images were collected using original method of 3D MRI-scanning where the starting moments of MRI processes enabled co-operative activities from a patient’s side via a special remote-control device. A stroboscopic method of data acquisition was used to reconstruct real articulatory processes for each speech stimulus. Data show clear real-time movements of the lips, tongue, underjaw and mandible, as well as velum and facial surfaces. Thus collected animated data could be exposed for improved teaching and learning foreign languages’ (in our case, the Russian language) technology, as well as for speech synthesis based on a physiologically relevant articulatory model. Sample movies and data analysis strategies are presented.

Words representing various types of actual phonotactic constraints and regular phonetic processes in Russian speech has been elected as experimental dataset. Results of syllabification experiments reveal preferred individual syllabification strategies, among the most stable should be mentioned tendency for predominance of V-coda syllables over C-codas. Other influential principles of syllabification are: 1) predomination of consonantal clusters in syllable's onset, 2) tendency to avoid syllables consisting of a single vowel, 3) a kind of a glottal stop at the beginning of vowel's articulation at the word's onset. Orthographic and phonetic transparency/opacity of a word has also been stated one of the crucial factors for syllables boundaries in consonantal clusters.

Their meaning should be explained and unified. For this purpose, monolingual (Russian-Russian) dictionaries could be used, along with bilingual dictionaries (English-Russian, etc.) and thesauri, which are special kind of dictionaries. Thesaurus assigns each term or phrase terminology to a particular class of concepts defining the structure of the subject area (sports in our case). This paper presents an attempt to justify the need for the thesaurus of the sports terminology, the methods and the difficulties associated with the development of such thesaurus, the formal procedure of vocabulary clustering and some of its application.
