Ronald Hattis
Ronald Philip Hattis is a family and preventive medicine physician with diverse and eclectic intellectual and academic interests. Among these are the philosophy of science including cosmology, space, and time.
He often "draws outside the lines" to challenge conventional wisdom and orthodoxy. His research has veered from psychology (which he pursued at the University of Chicago); to epidemiology (which he studied at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer, and at the University of Hawaii, where he obtained his M.P.H and Preventive Medicine residency); to prevention of HIV and other diseases (his M.D. is from the University of California, San Francisco, and he was certified as an HIV/AIDS Specialist by the American Academy of HIV Medicine); to cosmology (studied with a physicist tutor), and other fields.
A common theme in many of his pursuits has been to try to fill gaps, or to correct logical inconsistencies, in currently accepted theories. Hence he was one of the first to apply the scientific rigor and statistical analysis common to experimental psychology in animals, to address love feelings in humans. He has substituted a new classification system for prevention of disease for a current system that has disadvantages. He has demonstrated that a communicable diseases thought to be generally contagious may only be transmitted by a few highly infectious "spreaders" and rarely by others. He has worked for over two decades, both educationally and politically, to end prohibitions on applying to HIV/AIDS the successful public health strategies used for controlling infections like tuberculosis and syphilis. And he has developed a novel theory of cosmology and gravitation that may have promise in a "grand unified theory" of gravitation and the other forces and laws of physics. He also develops innovative solutions to political and social issues. In his spare time, he has been known to write original songs, and he owns a small music publishing and independent recording label.
Dr. Hattis is national Secretary and Past-President of the Beyond AIDS Foundation (www.beyondaids.org), Secretary-Treasurer and past-President of the California Academy of Preventive Medicine (capreventivemed.org), and a Clinical Associate Professor of Preventive Medicine at Loma Linda University School of Medicine. He has held past positions as a federal, state, and local public health officer. He has served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service and the U.S. Air Force Reserve; and has been involved in medical disaster work with NDMS, maritime medicine with NOAA, and rural and indigent primary care. He lives in Southern California, and can be reached at [email protected].

In response to a measles outbreak in the community, a measles immunization program was developed at our hospital for forensic psychiatric patients. Measles antibody screening of all employees and patients by means of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was followed by vaccination of susceptible persons. Serum samples from 813 employees and 868 patients during a 6-month period were analyzed. The susceptibility rate was 16.15% for employees and 13.60% for patients born in or after 1957. It was 4.67% for employees and 5.40% for patients born before 1957. The overall rate was 7.38% for employees and 8.53% for patients. A rate of 5% is known to be sufficient for transmission in institutions. Vaccine was given to 84.51% of susceptible patients. Vaccine failure occurred in 8.33%. Residual susceptibility rate was 1.84%. Cost analysis showed that screening of all individuals and immunization of susceptible persons was the most cost-effective method for measles control in our institutional setting.

The “Nothing but Space” Model: A Simpler New Theory of Space, Time, Gravity, Dark Energy, and More"
This slide presentation was first developed at Loma Linda University 2006-2009, with resident Melody Law). In various versions, it has had over 20,000 online views, 14,537 on Academia.edu by over 10,000 unique viewers, and about 10,000 on Researchgate.net. This 2022 version has replaced previous versions posted on Academia, and adds references at the end, which were not included in early versions.
Both an article and a slide presentation (Space, the Ultimate Substance of the Universe?) summarizing the main points have been provided.
