Boaz Levin
Boaz Levin (b. 1989) is an artist, writer and occasional curator. He currently holds a position as a research associate at the UDK, Berlin, where, together with Hito Steyerl, Maximillian Schmoetzer and Vera Tollman, he runs the Research Center for Proxy Politics (RCPP). Since October 2016, Levin is a member of the "Cultures of Critique" research training group at the Leuphana University, Lüneburg.
Levin has presented his work internationally, most recently at the CCA (Tel-Aviv), Former West (HKW, Berlin), Recontres Internationales (Paris, Berlin), Fidmarseille (Marseille), European Media Arts Festival in Osnäbruck, Human Resources (LA) the School of Kyiv (Kyiv biennial) and Auto Italia South East (London).
Last Person Shooter, directed together with Adam Kaplan, was awarded the Ostrovsky Family Fund Award during the Jerusalem Film Festival (2015).
Regarding Spectatorship, an ongoing curatorial research project co-curated together with Marianna Liosi, was shown at Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien Nov 2015-Jan 2016.
Levin is a member of the curatorial team of the Biennale für aktuelle Fotografie, which will open in September 2017.

The writings, visual essays, and conversations in Former West—more than seventy diverse contributions with global scope—unfold a tangled cartography far more complex than the simplistic dichotomy of East vs. West. In fact, the Cold War was a contest not between two ideological blocs but between two variants of Western modernity. It is this conceptual “Westcentrism” that a “formering” of the West seeks to undo.
The contributions revisit contemporary debates through the lens of a “former West.” They rethink conceptions of time and space dominating the legacy of the 1989–1990 revolutions in the former East, and critique historical periodization of the contemporary. The contributors map the political economy and social relations of the contemporary, consider the implications of algorithmic cultures and the posthuman condition, and discuss notions of solidarity—the difficulty in constructing a new “we” despite migration, the refugee crisis, and the global class recomposition. Can art institute the contemporary it envisions, and live as if it were possible?

The Research Center for Proxy Politics (RCPP) explores and reflects upon the nature of medial networks and their actors. Between September 2014 and August 2017, the center hosted workshops, lectures and events at the Universität der Künste, Berlin, under the auspices of Hito Steyerl’s Lensbased class. RCPP is run by Boaz Levin and Vera Tollmann.
