I Akropolis Ephoreia Inv. No. NK (= South Slope) 424. Plate 30. Fragment of a pedimental stele of white (Pentelic) marble. Broken on the right and bottom; its smooth left side and rough-picked back are original. The broken right side has traces of mortar. The exact finding place is uncertain, but it may be the stone described by P. G. Kalligas in \EXAr 18, B' 1, 1963 [1965], p. 18, as "a small fragment of a decree of the fourth century B.C.," found built into a modern house to the east of the Theater of Dionysos, in any case not far from the Asklepieion.

Victorious athletes were awarded crowns since the Archaic period; by the 5'h century, the crown c... more Victorious athletes were awarded crowns since the Archaic period; by the 5'h century, the crown came to symbolize civic and other honors, while towards the end of the Peloponnesian War crowns were also bestowed for military victories. From the late 5th century on the coronation motif was extended to gods and heroes. On a votive rellef found on theAthenian Acropolis (Acropolis Museum 1329) Herakles is crowned by Nike, who is in close proximity to Athena, indicating that the award actually came from the goddess herself. On Attic document reliefs of the 4th century BC illustrating honorary decrees, a version of Pheidias' statue of Athena Parthenos holds out a miniature Nike offering a crown to a person honored bythe city of Athens (e.g.decree honoring a priestess, Berlin, Antikensammlung K 104). A fragment of a relief in Pentelic marble found on the Acropolis depicts a horse galloping to left and crowned by a miniature Nike. The forelegs of the horse are missing, while only the left wing and the extended arms holding a wreath of the Nike survive. An architectural frame imitates a flat roof with antefixes supported by pilasters. The large blank area behind the horse's back may have carried a figural painting, now lost. lt is possible that a figure of Athena stands at the left, holding out Nike, as suggested by Otto Walter in 1923.The style of the horse points to a date in the first half of the 4'hcentury BC by comparison with horses on dated reliefs.

This brief survey concentrates on the iconography of historical battles in Greek art. Fights of g... more This brief survey concentrates on the iconography of historical battles in Greek art. Fights of gods and giants or amazons and Greeks or even episodes of the Trojan War are not treated here as they are not expected to reflect contemporary military practices. Only a small selection of historical battles was represented in art, usually not long after the events. The Battle of Marathon, a pivotal moment in Athenian history, was depicted twice in the monumental art of Athens, once in the lifetime of the battle's veterans, and again during the Peloponnesian War, in a temple glorifying the Athenians' military prowess. Anonymous battles of Greeks and Persians were also depicted in Attic redfigure vase-paintings produced shortly after the events. Battles against Persians reappear after Alexander the Great's conquest of the Persian Empire. His Successors commissioned paintings of Alexander's fights against Darius; anonymous battles against Persians can also be found in the funerary monuments of the veterans of Alexander's campaign. Among the battles between Greeks we single out the Battle of Oenoe between Athenians and Lacedaemonians, dedicated by the Athenians in the Painted Stoa in tandem with the Battle of Marathon. In the fourth century four rather insignificant military events were memorialized by major paintings. Later, the defeat of Perseus of Macedon at Pydna was immortalized by the Roman commander, Aemilius Paullus, in a sculptured relief frieze that decorated the base of his equestrian statue at Delphi.
