This article analyses different manifestations of Orientalism in the Turkish author Ömer Seyfeddin’s stories. Being a nationalist author, the facets of his relationship with Orientalism range from submission and resistance to a semi-conscious orientalization of the Balkans by means of Orientalistic imagery in his post-Balkan Wars stories. Given the centrality of sexuality to the Orientalist discourse, a close reading of several stories aims to show how Turkish nationalism (as represented by Ömer Seyfeddin’s work) adopts and reproduces the power structure and the masculine Subject inherent in Orientalism since it is a derivative of it. Ömer Seyfeddin’s designation of the Balkans as Turkey’s Orient sheds light on the psychological complexities of a peculiar turn in the critical period of nation formation (1908 – 1922).

This thesis examines the architectural works commissioned by Ottoman court eunuchs between the fifteenth and the eighteenth century, with special focus on Istanbul. As the first study that attempts to evaluate the collective behavior of Ottoman court eunuchs as patrons of architecture, it endeavors to chart particular patterns, trends, similarities, and differences among the works of eunuchs in terms of choice of architectural type, location, size, inscriptions, and decorative elements. Contextualizing individual projects within a historical narrative of eunuch patronage, it explores how the eunuchs' architectural output related to their identities, status, and power, as well as to the conceptions of propriety that informed building commissions. This thesis highlights a hitherto poorly studied part of the history of Ottoman court eunuchs, as it brings to the fore the white eunuch patrons who dominated the period before institutional change in the late sixteenth century allowed the chief black eunuch to emerge as an important figure in court politics. It is argued that the Ottoman court eunuch patronage had two main veins, one dominated by white eunuchs and the other by the chief black eunuch, two distinct eunuch identities which differ from one another on the basis of not only race, but also social origins, employment patterns, career prospects, and probably gender identities.

This article explores how the Ottoman court eunuchs engaged with the topography and population of Istanbul by examining the urban residences and other real estate endowed in the 1590s by four aghas representing different backgrounds and career tracks across the court eunuch spectrum. Using evidence gleaned from their endowment deeds and other documents, it attempts to reconstruct their immediate living environments and map their property ownership across the cityscape, reflecting on the spatial distribution and concentration areas of their real estate, the continuities and changes in their residential patterns, as well as how their career tracks, family members, friends, and other connections informed their proprietorship.

Hadımlar ve Şehir: On Altıncı Yüzyıl Sonu İstanbul’unda Saray Hadımlarının Evleri ve Emlaki

Bu makale, Osmanlı saray hadımlarının İstanbul’un topografyası ve nüfusuyla nasıl bir ilişki kurduğunu incelemek amacıyla, çeşitlilik gösteren bu grup içerisinde farklı köken ve kariyer geçmişlerini temsil eden dört ağanın 1590’larda vakfettiği şehir içi konutları ve diğer emlaki mercek altına alıyor. Ağaların vakfiyeleri ile diğer belgelerden elde edilen izleri takip ederek onların bizzat içinde yaşadıkları ortamı yeniden kurmaya ve edindikleri mülkleri şehir peyzajı üzerinde haritalandırmaya çalışıyor. Bunu yaparken de mülklerinin mekânsal dağılımı ve yoğunlaştığı alanlar ile ikamet örüntülerindeki süreklilik ve değişimler üzerine düşünmeyi, bir yandan da meslek hayatlarının, aile üyelerinin, dostlarının ve diğer bağlarının, hadımların kendi mülkiyetleri üzerinde nasıl bir etkisi olduğunu anlamayı amaçlıyor.

Eski çağlardaki evlerin maddi kalıntıları ile günlük yaşama ilişkin metinsel kanıtlar, bu konutların mimari ve dekoratif özelliklerini ve özel mekânların kullanılma biçimlerini anlayabilmemiz için olmazsa olmaz niteliktedir. Antik evler, içlerinde hem özel hem de kamusal faaliyetlerin gerçekleştirilebildiği yapılar olarak, eski toplumların sosyal, iktisadi, siyasi ve dini yönlerine ayna tutar. Ne var ki, eski çağlar hakkındaki bilgimiz açısından taşıdıkları paha biçilmez öneme rağmen, konut yapıları genelde hâlâ yeterince ilgi görmeyen bir araştırma alanı olarak kalmıştır.

Bu derleme kitap, İstanbul’daki Koç Üniversitesi Anadolu Medeniyetleri Araştırma Merkezi’nde 2013 yılında düzenlenen 8. Uluslararası ANAMED Yıllık Sempozyumu’nda sunulmuş bildirilerden oluşuyor. Makaleler, Roma devri, Geç Antik, Bizans ve Erken İslam dönemlerinde Akdeniz çevresindeki özel konutlarda meydana gelen gelişmelere, sürekliliklere ve değişimlere odaklanıyor. Değişik bölgelere ve dönemlere ait evler arasındaki etkileşime ışık tutan kitap, özel konutların mimari özellikleri, yerleşim planları ve iç mekânları ile onları yaptıran ve kullanan insanları mercek altına alıyor.
