Color Song

Color Song  oil 9x12 inches
Purchase info here.

Here's a crazy bit of color to start the new year!  I hope 2023 is off to a good start for you.  I painted this back in June.  In the back of the painting you'll see a small painting in a gold frame that was done by my friend, May.  It had been almost a year since she'd gone on to Heaven.  I loved the color scheme of her little painting, so I looked for objects in my studio that fit the scheme.  I enjoyed painting while thinking of my friend.

Late Night Fruit

Late Night Fruit  oil 6x6 inches
Purchase info here.

Here's a little quick study I did for a class.  This painting illustrates the fact that you can render form in a very simple way amd at the same time make a bold statement about light and shadow.

Tea & Oranges

oil 6x6 inches For a closer look and purchase info click here. Not your usual mug, this flat sided cup came from Stash Tea Co. many years ago. My favorite part of this painting besides the complimentary color scheme is the half-submerged tea bag. That was fun to paint!

Dots & Daisies -a still life painting in oil

oil 8x8 inches magnify/purchase info Sometimes coming up with a title and then something to say about the painting is more difficult than painting the painting! I'll just say it was the yummy color of the cup that excited me about this set up.

White On White-sold

oil on canvas panel 6x8 inches

Night before last I left my photo references and attempted to take the DPW challenge; paint white objects on a white background. I started with Q-tips on a white surface, wiped it out and went to bed. Yesterday I painted this. Blaaahhhh. I saw a lot of orange thanks probably to my orange T-shirt. I used blue and orange to make the grays and swing them warm or cool, and yellow in the lights. I really missed having a colorful subject and pondered the act of painting something I'm not particularly excited about. Not being one to give up easily, I painted another one I'm a bit happier with which I'll post tomorrow.

Cup 'n Cutie SOLD

oil on canvas panel 6x6 inches

Recently I discovered the work of David Lloyd. I love the clarity of his color, his luscious neutrals and masterful edges. He was kind enough to share with me a list of colors he uses for mixing neutrals. With this painting I tried out raw umber for the first time. Design-wise, I usually try to avoid diagonals going off into a corner, but since the spoon kinda points to the tangerine, I thought I might get away with it. Hopefully the eye loves that reflection enough to stay in the painting instead of sliding up the spoon handle into oblivion! I welcome your opinion.

Cherry Cups

oil on canvas panel 6x6 inches
The Daily Paintworks Challenge for this week is about balance. The entries so far are towers of cups and other objects. Since I only used two cups, I hope this still qualifies. My aim here is more about dominance than balance: dominantly neutral color with a pop of saturated red, dominantly curvy shapes with a few straight lines. Barely spared from the wipe-off in the beginning, the reflective whites and shiny surfaces made it a challenging exercise in values...come to think of it, just about every painting is an exercise in values!
