Design/methodology/approach The proposed service implements a web-based information seeking process that combines browsing and searching of information assets within a library, based on their corresponding subject headings. The underlying subject headings

Such a process supports multilinguality and concept disambiguation in a way that prevents overcrowding the screen while exposing the expressiveness of the underlying ontology. In order to assess the effectiveness of the proposed approach in a real-world scenario, a prototype web-based application is developed by utilizing the hidden knowledge existing within the authority records of the Online Public Access Catalog -OPAC located at the library of the Ionian University in Greece. More specifically, the underlying Library of Congress Subject Headings -LCSHs have been employed to formulate an ontology in OWL format. Interaction with library users is facilitated through an intuitive, web-based GUI implemented in AJAX technology.

Such a requirement is critical for the overall quality of linked data in terms of consistency and interlinking. Although the provision of dereferenceable URIs is a step towards the right direction, current status of the semantic web indicates that such a

The goal of this work is to exploit the advantages that derive from the new XML standard in the field of digital libraries. The proposed framework is presented through a digital library architecture of University data. The diverse nature of such material dictates that any attempt to organize it should be based on standards. Based on the proposed framework, a prototype implementation is under development in our University, from which many useful conclusions have been extracted and presented throughout this paper.

Many digital library systems could benefit a lot from the proposed approach, since it is heavily based on metadata, which constitute the building block of such systems. We also propose a way of ranking search results according to their overall importance, which is defined as a weighted combination of the relevancy and popularity of a resource that is being referenced in a search results list. In order to evaluate this model, we have developed a interactive search results manipulation application, which is executed at the client's workspace through a Web browser without any further interaction with the server that provided the initial search results list. The prototype implementation is based on the XML standard and has been evaluated through an adequate evaluation process from which useful conclusions have been obtained.

It is capable of retaining ontology expressiveness while at the same time hiding the formal terminology that is usually employed in the context of ontology development. According to the proposed ontology visualization model, classes are represented as boxes and their corresponding properties are represented as labeled lines connecting such boxes. By hoping from one box to another, users are able to interactively explore the underlying ontology. Such interaction is facilitated through an intuitive, web-based GUI implemented in Javascript, which communicates with the underlying ontology through a middleware component implemented in Python.

Despite their wide usage, large-scale search engines are not always effective in tracing the best possible information for the user needs. There are times when web searchers spend too much time searching over a large-scale search engine. When (if) they eventually succeed in getting back the anticipated results, they often realize that their successful queries are significantly different from their initial one. In this paper, we introduce a query construction service for assisting web information seekers specify precise and unambiguous queries over large-scale search engines. The proposed service leverages the collective knowledge encapsulated mainly in the Wikipedia corpus and provides an intuitive GUI via which web users can determine the semantic orientation of their searches before these are executed by the desired engine.
