El discurso político oficial europeo se orienta cada vez más hacia una identificación de la inmig... more El discurso político oficial europeo se orienta cada vez más hacia una identificación de la inmigración y la llegada de refugiados con la amenaza y la necesidad de inmunizar a la comunidad frente a peligros tales como el terrorismo, la pérdida de capacidad económica o el riesgo de contagio de actitudes, valores y creencias. A través de la exploración de las películas Welcome (Philippe Lioret, Francia, 2009) y Le Havre (Aki Kaurismäki, Finlandia-Francia-Alemania, 2011), se propone una forma de actuación por parte de los protagonistas que, a riesgo de perder la inmunidad, buscan instancias que eviten ser solidarias con el poder (Esposito, 2006b). Tales protagonistas ejemplifican un comportamiento de exposición a la vida, al contagio de la relación emocional, que contribuye a difuminar las jerarquías entre los distintos tipos de vida. The role of culture in urban regeneration should be studied at different levels. Cultural mapping... more The role of culture in urban regeneration should be studied at different levels. Cultural mapping gives us a new understanding of the historical processes that have transformed public spaces in cities whose productive models and social relationships have undergone critical changes, affecting how they project their identity inside and outside their boundaries. Our research focuses on the case study of Bilbao (Basque Country, Spain). The first part of the analysis centres on a critical interpretation of the importance granted to cultural infrastructures in areas that were most intensely exposed to the changes which are known as the 'Guggenheim effect' on the international scene. This study especially examines the tension between today's transformations and managing memories from the past. The second part analyses cultural mapping practices developed in emerging areas of the city such as the Zorrotzaurre peninsula, which is the new focus of the metropolitan development scheme. The proposals chosen for this study foster democratic responsibility in city management by using new technologies. They enable us take a closer look at some of the city's most innovative collaborative cultural mapping practices, methodology and processes, as well as the theoretical frameworks that inspired them. Lastly, a proposal is put forth to implement participatory cultural mapping to identify the spillover effects of the cultural and creative industries located in renewed urban spaces.
Digital technologies and the Internet have become an integral part of our everyday lives and have... more Digital technologies and the Internet have become an integral part of our everyday lives and have meant that we find ourselves immersed in a digital culture where knowledge is online. This article examines the impact of the development of the digital age on culture and education, two directly related social spheres that have seen the emergence of several social and digital divisions. Not everybody is able to access and enjoy online culture, so promoting appropriate training in the use of the tools needed in a digital society is indispensable. On the basis of a review of literature on the subject by leading researchers in the areas of culture and education, we conclude that the enjoyment of digital culture entails a radical change of perspective, which doubtless involves adapting the current education system.

This article aims to show how the space for leisure practices in the art sector is a political co... more This article aims to show how the space for leisure practices in the art sector is a political construction. To do this, the essay focuses on public (art audience) as key concept. It argues that art audiences are critically engaged and politically significant communities, through which each society gives an institutional dimension to cultural practices. In dialogue with modern thinkers such as Adorno, Baudrillard, Warburg and Benjamin, or architects like Rem Koolhaas, the article presents audiences and publics from both a social and institutional points of view, understanding that the temporal and spatial dynamics behind their community boundaries are worth exploring. We think that there are at least two dominant forms of an emerging social rhetoric that are producing innovative ways of building the spaces for consuming cultural offer in the late modern society: we call them rhetorics of convergence and rhetorics of persuation.
La presente tesis aborda la obra del escritor aleman Thomas Mann con la intencion de estudiar com... more La presente tesis aborda la obra del escritor aleman Thomas Mann con la intencion de estudiar como se construyen en ella tres conceptos-clave del pensamiento contemporaneo: "Sujeto", "Cultura" y "Forma Artistica". Las hipotesis fundamentales de la investigacion han sido desarrolladas de acuerdo al siguiente diseno argumental: Capitulo primero: Introduccion al universo del autor mediante un dialogo con destacadas representantes de la constelacion filosofica-social de su tiempo. Se ha realizado un recorrido por diferentes paisajes de la sociologia temprana centroeuropea (de la mano de autores como Tonnies, Sombart, Troeltsch, Simmed y Weber) cuyo motivo inspirador ha sido la "construccion cultural de la personalidad", poniendo una atencion muy especial en las afinidades existetnes entre el universo de las ficciones mannianas y aquellos procesos diagnosticados y analizados por los pensadores citados (por ejemplo, la influencia del espiritu del capitalismo sobre los metodos de racionalizacion de la existencia definidores de la etica burguesa, o la interpretacion del fin de la modernidad a la luz de la secularizacion de las doctrinas sociales del protestantismo ascetico). Capitulos segundo y tercero: aqui nos hemos aproximado a los conceptos de "Sujeto", "Cultura" y "Forma Artistica" tal como se articulan en Los Buddenbrook y Doktor Faustus, respectivamente. En el primer caso, nos ha interesado descubrir cuales eran los rudimentos eticos de la construccion del "Sujeto" en la opera prima novelesca del escritor sirviendonos del concepto de vocacion como motivo inspirador del analisis: han podido destacarse de este modo cuales son las consecuencias socio-culturales implicadas en la respuesta al deber profesional en la epoca del capitalismo tardio y de que tipo son los efectos del vaciamiento religioso de las conductas profesionales susceptibles de ser incluidos bajo el termino desencantamiento. ¿Cuáles son las relaciones entre el cine y la memoria? ¿Cómo ha contribuido el cine a la construc... more ¿Cuáles son las relaciones entre el cine y la memoria? ¿Cómo ha contribuido el cine a la construcción social de la memoria a lo largo del siglo XX? El siglo XX es una invención del cinematógrafo, pudo decir Jean-Luc Godard. El arte aparentemente más dotado para registrar el presente se ha mostrado clarividente a la hora de ayudarnos a imaginar el pasado. No sólo como testigo. No solo dando testimonio. El cinematógrafo es uno de los hábitats más fértiles, y polémicos, en que nos relacionamos con lo que somos y hemos sido: en sus capacidades e incapacidades, en sus revelaciones y ocultaciones. Este trabajo recorre algunos de los más importantes paisajes de la memoria en el siglo XX: la idea de nación, subjetividad, sociedad y guerra. Y lo hace a través de un recorrido cinematográfico que va de Griffith a Godard, pasando por Fritz Lang, John Ford u Orson Welles. Ellos, sus miradas, sus filmes, nos revelaron cuáles son los mitos que legitiman la memoria política, desvelan las leyendas que la socializan, reconstruyen los marcos históricos en que los que encarnan sus poderes y conflictos. Pues la memoria no es una facultad recordatoria sino un consorcio de intereses y poderes constantemente tensionando e iluminando nuestro presente: como muestran las películas que aquí son analizas, "El hombre que mató a Liberty Valance", "M. Un ensayo inspirado en las tesis de filosofía de la historia de Walter Benjamin y con apoyatura en algunos de los pensadores que de forma más sugerente han tratado el cruce de historia de la memoria y políticas de la imagen, como Georges Didi-Huberman.
