It was a time of great strength and power for the Catholic Church and, at the same time, of scientific discoveries that would bring some of its dogmas to the fore. It was a time in which human beings were capable of both spectacular levels of creativity and brutal violence, which was fuelled by endless wars - particularly between Catholic and Protestant monarchies - and by the aggressive colonial adventures of Europeans. It was an era, moreover, marked by the hard struggle for survival of the most disadvantaged classes (a large part of the population). The complexity and variety of the European map in terms of systems of systems, religious doctrines, social situations and cultural proposals would give rise to a great diversity of artístic diversity of artístic languages, sometimes with a naturalístic accent, others marked by the search for an idealistic search for an ideal beauty inspired by antiquity, or else focused on creating concentrated on creating luxurious artifacts of great effect. The history of art has brought all these expressions together under the genèric qualifiers of baroque and, well into the s. XVIII century, rococo . The Catalonia of the 17th and 18th centuries had a political sovereignty that was very conditioned within the Spanish Monarchy. It did not have the resources that royalty and court aristocracy devoted to artistic activity in other European territories. In fact, our country had something resembling a court during the resemblance to a court during the fleeting episodi of the stay of the Archduke Charles between 1708 and 1711, and it did not have any great aristocràtic resident families. However, it was capable to generate a great deal of artistic activity. Thanks to a modest but sustained economic growth, this period was a determining factor in the in the creation of our heritage, even though it there were periods of stagnation or depression provoked by by the wars of the Reapers and the War of Succession, and by the demographic crises caused by the contagion of of diseases or by the hard famine of the years of bad weather.
